Making tea less exclusive
The Lipton story
Thomas Lipton opened his first grocery shop in Glasgow in 1871. He used showmanship, efficient retailing and direct sourcing to bring products within reach of a much wider public. Tea became the defining expression of that approach.
By the 1890s, Lipton was buying and developing tea estates in Ceylon, now Sri Lanka, linking the garden, packing and shop more directly. The result was a tea brand that spread far beyond Britain and made its yellow identity globally recognisable.

A simple brewing guide
- Black teaFreshly boiled water and roughly three minutes is a sound starting point. Add milk only where the flavour suits it.
- Green teaUse cooler water, around 75 to 85 degrees C, and begin at two minutes to protect the softer character.
- Fruit & herbalUse freshly boiled water and allow a longer infusion, commonly five minutes, to draw out the fruit and herbs.
