Lipton take on Earl Grey, and the Italian bergamot is the selling point worth taking seriously. Bergamot from Calabria has a brighter, cleaner citrus character than the generic flavouring cheaper Earl Greys lean on, and here it comes through sharp and lively with no soapy tail. Underneath is a decent, sturdy black tea in pyramid bags, which let the leaf open out a little more than a flat bag would. Next to the Dilmah Earl Grey we also stock, this is the more fragrant and citrus led of the two, if only slightly, while the Dilmah is earthier with more Ceylon weight, so pick by which you want in front: the bergamot or the tea. I will leave the marketing talk aside; as a cup it is a clean, bright, well judged Earl Grey, best black with a thread of honey if you want it. A reliable everyday version that does not taste cheap.

Water temperature100°C, since the Earl Grey leaf needs freshly boiled water to give up its theaflavins and thearubigins in full.
MeasureOne pyramid to 200ml makes an everyday cup; for builder's strength, use 2 pyramids in 300ml.
Steep3 to 5 minutes: the longer end for a strong cup with milk, the shorter for a lighter one.
ServiceStir in a little full fat milk, and sugar if you take it. Casein in the milk evens out the tannins, and that is the reason most British tea gets milk.
