A polarising cup, and with good reason. This is a big aniseed hit from the fennel, bright and almost peppery, married to twenty percent liquorice root that brings an intense honeyed sweetness with no sugar added. Fans of aniseed balls or ouzo will find it properly moreish; if aniseed is not for you, nothing in the blend tones it down, so know which camp you sit in before you buy. What it does very well is body, the whole-leaf temples give a surprisingly thick, silky mouthfeel that thin herbal bags never manage, and the aroma off the pot is properly fresh fennel rather than a dusty approximation. It is the classic after-dinner digestive style of tea, best in the evening since it is caffeine-free, and a honey swirl pushes the natural sweetness further still. Of our liquorice-led herbals it is the savoury-aromatic one, where Teapigs Sweet Ginger is the warming-spicy one. Forget any talk of tonics; this is a strong flavoured herbal that people either love or leave.
