Real cocoa beans and chocolate flakes melt into the cup instead of leaning on synthetic flavouring, so the cocoa depth is the real thing and the body turns silky as they dissolve. Sensibly, it sits on a bold Assam and Rwandan black base, so unlike the Teapigs Rooibos Creme Caramel this one has caffeine and a sturdy tea backbone holding the dessert note up rather than letting it go flat and sweet. It is less aggressively sugared than the Lipton vanilla-caramel; the sweetness here is restrained and natural, leaning more dark-chocolate than confectionery. That makes it the pick for someone who wants a chocolate cup that is still a tea, not a hot-chocolate substitute, and a splash of milk turns it into a convincing chocolate-tea latte. Brewing the perfect cup
Water temperature100°C; Assam and Rwandan leaf only releases its full theaflavins and thearubigins in water at a rolling boil.
MeasureOne temple to 200ml makes a normal cup; for builder's strength, put 2 temples in 300ml.
Steep3 to 5 minutes: stay longer if milk is going in, come out sooner for a lighter cup.
ServiceFull fat milk, just a splash, then stir; sugar is up to you. Milk's casein softens the black tea's tannin grip, the reason a splash goes into nearly every British mug.
Iced versionBrew 4 temples strong in 500ml and, while the chocolate tea is hot, sweeten it with caster sugar, 4 tablespoons in all; cool, add 500ml of cold water, then the juice of 2 lemons.
