Brew Tea Co English Breakfast, 15 Tea Bags 56g
Buy this one if you have decided tea bags are the problem but have no intention of standing over a pot and a strainer at seven in the morning. The leaf inside is the large grade that normally never reaches a bag at all, and the bag is folded wide so it has room to open. Expect a slow, rounded cup that wants milk rather than lemon. It is fully caffeinated black tea with no decaf version in the line, so it is a morning box rather than an evening one. Whether the softness reads as depth or as missing bite is where opinion splits.
Brew Tea Co English Breakfast, in brief.
Brew Tea Co English Breakfast is a breakfast blend made from whole leaf rather than fine broken grades.
That bag is half again the size of a standard one, which is why a single bag carries a full mug and why four minutes is the honest steep rather than three. Then milk, generously.
That is a heavier dose than almost anything else on the everyday shelf, heavier than the 3.1g bags that count as strong and half again the 2.5g bags that fill most cartons, and it is the reason one bag comfortably carries a full-sized mug rather than a teacup.

The Story Behind Brew Tea Co
Brew Tea Co exists because of a complaint about grading. When tea is sorted, the whole leaf goes one way and the fine broken particles go another, and it is the second stream that ends up in most tea bags because it brews fast, brews dark and packs tightly. Brew Tea Co put the first stream into a bag instead, made the bag large enough for the leaf to open, and accepted that the resulting box would be small and the price per cup would be high.
The pack is sold as an English Breakfast, which describes a style rather than a place, so we record the origin as a blend and claim nothing further.
Packaging: Follow the current UK pack and local-authority guidance; components can require different disposal routes.
What You Are Actually Buying
- Whole leaf in a bag: the format is the product. Large leaf needs room to unfurl, so the bag is folded big, and the leaf releases slowly and evenly rather than all at once.
- What it is not: not a household box, not a fast cup, and not a decaf. Fifteen bags is a fortnight of one mug a day.
Getting It Right in the Cup
- Water temperature: 100 degrees, freshly boiled.
- Measure: one bag per 300 to 350ml.
- Steep: four minutes, five for a very large mug.
- Service: with milk. Drunk black at four minutes it is heavy but not harsh, which is unusual and worth trying once.
- Storage: sealed, dry and dark. Whole leaf keeps its character longer than broken leaf, but a fifteen-bag box will be gone long before that matters.
- Best with: a cooked breakfast, buttered toast, porridge, or a bacon sandwich on a Saturday.

The taste profile
How does it compare
Whole leaf is slower than broken leaf, and this blend is built around that. It needs full heat to open the leaf at all and it needs four honest minutes to get where it is going. The usual complaint about it is that the first cup tasted weak, and the usual cause is a three-minute habit carried over from a bag of dust.
The Morning Mug
The Pot, and the Big Mug
Made with this tea
The Morning Mug
How to make the standard mug of Brew Tea Co English Breakfast.
- 1 bag Brew Tea Co English Breakfast
- 300 to 350ml water straight off the boil
- A generous splash of milk
- Sugar, optional
- Pour 300 to 350ml of water straight off the boil over one bag.
- Steep four full minutes. Three is the commonest mistake and it costs you most of what you paid for.
- Press the bag gently against the side and lift it out.
- Add milk generously. The malt is what it binds to.
What you'll end up with: A thick, malty mug with a soft finish rather than a tannic scrape, which is the argument for whole leaf in one mouthful.
A Pot from Two Bags
How to brew a pot without using three bags.
- 2 bags Brew Tea Co English Breakfast
- 600ml water straight off the boil
- A warmed teapot
- Milk
- Warm the pot, add two bags and 600ml of water straight off the boil.
- Steep four minutes, then lift both bags out together.
- Pour within twenty minutes; a generous leaf load keeps extracting long after the flavour has finished arriving.
- Two of these bags carry a pot that would normally take three, because each holds a third more leaf.
What you'll end up with: A full pot at proper strength on two bags rather than three.
The Pint Mug, One Bag
How to fill a 400ml mug without a second bag.
- 1 bag Brew Tea Co English Breakfast
- 400ml water straight off the boil
- Milk
- Pour 400ml of water straight off the boil over one bag.
- Steep five minutes rather than four.
- Lift the bag out and add milk.
- Whole leaf releases tannin slowly, so the fifth minute adds strength here where it would add harshness to a broken grade.
What you'll end up with: A full pint mug at real strength from a single bag, which is rare.
Overnight Cold Brew
How to cold brew a whole-leaf breakfast blend.
- 3 bags Brew Tea Co English Breakfast
- 750ml cold water
- Ice to serve
- A splash of milk, optional
- Drop three bags into 750ml of cold water in a covered jug.
- Refrigerate eight hours or overnight, then lift the bags out.
- Serve over ice, with a splash of milk if you like.
- Cold water pulls almost no tannin, so the malt arrives without any of the grip.
What you'll end up with: A smooth sweet cold tea that is one of the few able to take milk straight from the fridge.
Spiced Pot
How to build a spiced pot on a heavy breakfast blend.
- 2 bags Brew Tea Co English Breakfast
- 600ml water straight off the boil
- 4 crushed cardamom pods, a small piece of cinnamon, 2 cloves
- 150ml milk
- Sugar to taste
- Steep the spices in the just boiled water for two minutes before the tea goes in.
- Add two bags and steep four more minutes, then lift them out.
- Stir in warm milk and sugar to taste and strain into cups.
- A heavy malty base is what stops the spice taking over. A light blend vanishes underneath it.
What you'll end up with: A spiced pot where the tea is still the loudest thing in the cup.
Builder’s Brew, Whole Leaf Version
How to make a very strong mug without it turning harsh.
- 1 bag Brew Tea Co English Breakfast
- 250ml water straight off the boil
- Milk
- 1 teaspoon sugar, optional
- Use less water rather than more tea: 250ml on one bag.
- Steep five minutes.
- Press the bag firmly and lift it out, then add milk and sugar.
- Concentrating by reducing the water keeps the malt in proportion; adding bags and time together is what makes a builder’s brew harsh.
What you'll end up with: A very strong mug that is thick rather than bitter, which most strong tea is not.
Brewing the perfect cup
What’s in it, what to know
Inside the pack
| Component | Proportion | What it brings |
|---|---|---|
| Whole leaf black tea | the whole of the blend | Everything in the cup: the deep malt, the thick body, the colour and the caffeine. The whole-leaf grade is why it releases slowly and rewards a fourth minute. |
| Origin | sold as a blend | English Breakfast is a style rather than a place. No country, region or garden is stated; read the current pack for any origin statement. |
| Added flavouring | none | An unscented breakfast blend. No fruit pieces, no petals, no added flavouring and no added sugar. |

Characterising components shown.
Sourcing & blend. Brew Tea Co English Breakfast, 15 Tea Bags 56g is put together by Brew Tea Co, a company built on one objection to the British tea bag: that it is filled with the fine broken grades left over once the whole leaf has been sorted out. Their answer was to put the whole leaf in instead and make the bag big enough for it to open, which produces a small box and a high price per cup. Our assessment rests on the pack format and the brand's published description.
What's in Brew Tea Co English Breakfast, 15 Tea Bags 56g, and what isn't:
- In: whole-leaf black tea at a shade over 3.7g a bag, in a bag folded large enough for the leaf to open, with nothing blended in alongside it.
- No artificial colours, preservatives or added sugar: an unscented black tea, so there is nothing to colour or sweeten. Any sweetness in the cup is malt from the leaf.
