LCurator note · Yogi Tea Organic
A clever idea: chocolate flavour with none of the sugar, fat or caffeine of actual hot cocoa. It is built from roasted cocoa shells and chai spice, so the aroma is like fresh baked brownies, the cinnamon and ginger give a gentle chai warmth through it, and carob and liquorice add a clean herbal sweetness with nothing added. The finish reads dessert-like without the cloying tail. Set expectations though: this is a chocolate-scented infusion, not a creamy hot chocolate, so the body is light and the cocoa is aromatic rather than rich. Against the Teapigs Chocolate Flake we stock, that one is a caffeinated black tea with real melting chocolate and far more body; this is the caffeine-free, near-zero-calorie way to answer a late-night chocolate craving without a mug of cocoa. A splash of milk pushes it closer to the real thing. Ignore the mood talk on the box; take it as a smart, light chocolate substitute and on those terms it is well judged.

About this tea

Yogi Tea Organic Choco, in brief.

Yogi Tea Organic Choco, 17 Tea Bags 37.4g is a cocoa-shell and spice infusion with no tea leaf.

Caffeine: This blend contains cocoa shells but no tea leaf. The current pack does not publish a caffeine figure, so we do not describe it as zero-caffeine or invent a per-cup amount. See our caffeine guide for how we handle products without a declared figure.

Yogi Tea Organic Choco is the cocoa-spiced Ayurvedic herbal from Yogi Tea, the German-American Ayurvedic tea brand, built on cocoa shells and cinnamon with cardamom, ginger, clove and other supporting Ayurvedic herbs, picked into the teas.co.uk curator selection as the proper Ayurvedic-style alternative to the standard supermarket hot chocolate or chocolate-flavoured chai blends.

The cocoa shells provide the structural chocolate backbone, giving the cup its deep brown colour and the cocoa note without ever quite tipping into the dessert-style hot chocolate direction the rest of the supermarket cocoa aisle defaults to, while the cinnamon, cardamom and ginger sit on top as the chai-style spice quartet. The cup drinks like a chai-and-chocolate hybrid, the Ayurvedic spice profile lifting the cocoa away from a sweet-and-creamy dessert mug towards a more complex cup that suits late evening as easily as early morning.

A seventeen-bag Yogi Tea household pack at a premium price for the organic-Ayurvedic tier, a sensible novelty cup for any household interested in the German-American Ayurvedic interpretation of the chocolate-chai hybrid, the brand's reputation for proper organic-certified Ayurvedic recipes making this a worthwhile alternative to the standard supermarket cocoa-and-chai bags. Yogi Tea is one of the largest Ayurvedic-tradition herbal brands in the European market, the line drawing on the work of the late Yogi Bhajan in the nineteen sixties and seventies bringing the Ayurvedic herbal philosophy to the West, and the brand has held its place across the European herbal aisle for several decades on the strength of the recipes alone. The Choco blend in particular suits households who want a chocolate-themed cup without committing to the calorie load of a proper hot chocolate, the cocoa shells delivering the colour and the basic cocoa note without ever quite reaching the sweetened-and-creamy dessert direction the rest of the chocolate supermarket aisle defaults to. The cup ports well as an after-dinner alternative to a proper espresso or a sugary hot chocolate.

Curator notes: our editorial review shaped the tasting profile; we compared it with the current retail pack and the brand's spec sheet and confirmed it in trial brews using the recommended steep time and water temperature. Orders placed before 2pm, Monday to Friday, are dispatched within the UK on the same day. More detail on storage, freshness and brewing temperatures is in the Q and A tab underneath.

Yogi Tea Organic Choco is a good alternative to sugary hot cocoa or heavy coffee, and it has plenty of flavour of its own. Where basic herbal teas can taste thin, this infusion pairs organic cocoa shells with traditional chai spices for a full bodied, aromatic cup. These Yogi plant based tea bags offer the approachable quality of many a good teas and put it into an easy format you can enjoy as an afternoon treat or a reliable way to stop late night chocolate cravings. To put a British spin on it, this chocolate herbal tea goes nicely with a traditional splash of milk, or served as a smooth cold brew frappe. This blend takes the Yogi tradition of quality into 2026, as welcome in a quiet moment at home as in the thick of a busy day.

Side by side

How does it compare

vs Pukka Three CinnamonYogi offers a much deeper chocolate profile whereas Pukka focuses entirely on the heat of multiple cinnamon varieties.
vs Clipper Snore and PeaceYogi gives a richer, dessert like profile against the deep chamomile and lemon balm notes you find in Clipper.
Brewing

Brewing the perfect cup

MeasureUse one bag for every 200ml in a standard cup, or 2 bags in 300ml for something closer to builder strength.
SteepAllow 3 to 5 minutes, towards the top end for a stronger, milk friendly cup and the bottom end for a lighter pour.
ServiceAdd a little full fat milk, a splash is plenty, and stir; sugar is up to your taste. Casein in milk takes the edge off tannins, which is why a British cuppa nearly always comes with milk.
Iced versionIced Choco: 4 bags brewed strong in 500ml, sugared hot with caster sugar (4 tablespoons), chilled, then stretched with 2 lemons squeezed in and 500ml of cold water poured over.
Best withA full English breakfast, marmalade on buttered toast, fruit cake in wedges, or scones with cream.
