Yogi Tea celebrates 40 years in business

Yogi turned 40. Founded 1984 in Eugene, Oregon by Yogi Bhajan. Still privately held. Still selling the same Yogi Tea Classic Chai recipe. The German operation now produces most of the European stock, but the original Oregon brew is still the formula.

Yogi Bhajan was the Sikh teacher who first served what became the Yogi Tea recipe at his Kundalini yoga classes in Los Angeles in the early 1970s. The Classic Chai blend (cinnamon, cardamom, clove, black pepper, ginger) was a free pour at the end of every session. Students kept asking for the recipe. By 1984 the company existed to sell it.

The German operation matters because it explains why Yogi tastes the same in Tunbridge Wells as it does in Hamburg. The German factory works to the Oregon recipe specs, with EU grown organic spice where possible and a single sourcing standard the US team signs off. Most American wellness brands shipping to the UK do not have this. The cardamom in a Yogi box is the same cardamom worldwide.

The range has grown to dozens of SKUs across functional categories: Bedtime, Calming, Throat Comfort, Egyptian Liquorice, Sweet Tangerine. We carry the most asked for blends in the UK, plus the Classic Chai pack that is still the bestseller by a wide margin after 40 years.

Yogi sits in the small group of US wellness tea brands that have stayed independent and product led through forty years of US natural foods consolidation. Traditional Medicinals, Numi and Yogi are the survivors. The original recipe is unchanged. For a category that lives by reformulation, that is rare.
