Nothing about the coffee changes in this format; the pouch is simply a way of getting the next 250g into a jar you already own. Handled well, it is the tidy repeat buy; handled carelessly, it ends up clumped and stale, so the method is worth two minutes of your time.
Same Original, different wrapper
Think of the pouch as a delivery method rather than a different product. Inside is standard Nescafé Original: dark and toasted, low in acidity, with a deliberate bitter edge that stands up to milk and sugar. What the pouch changes is the container, trading a heavy glass jar for something flat and light that stacks neatly at the back of a cupboard.
That makes the order of buying straightforward. The first time, get a jar, because the granules need somewhere to live. From then on, refilling from a pouch keeps the same coffee coming with far less packaging going out of the kitchen each time. Anyone who already refills soap or detergent at home will recognise the idea at once.
Decanting without losing half on the worktop
Dry the jar thoroughly before you begin; soluble coffee draws moisture out of the air, and even a slightly damp jar will turn the granules lumpy within days. Set the jar down on the counter instead of holding it in one hand, cut a small corner off the pouch rather than ripping the top, and pour slowly. Granules bounce and scatter further than seems possible.
Finish the old jar before refilling it. Tipping new granules over old ones means the bottom layer is never reached and slowly goes stale. Empty the whole pouch in on the day you open it, since the pouch is not built to close as tightly as a screw-top lid, and copy the best before date onto the jar with a marker pen, or tuck the snipped corner inside the cupboard door.
Where a pouch makes most sense
Because it is flat and light, the pouch is the easy way to keep a reserve: tucked behind the jars, in a caravan locker, at a holiday let or in the staff room that always runs out first. Using it as a long-term container on the counter is a mistake, though; left open above a steaming kettle, the granules lose their aroma well ahead of the date on the pack.
On disposal, follow the current pack and your local authority's guidance. Laminated paper packs are not taken by every kerbside scheme, and the pouch and any closure may need different routes, so check before assuming it goes in with the cardboard. Once the coffee is safely in a jar with a proper lid, you get exactly the same Original mug as ever.
The packs we stock
- Nescafe Original Instant Coffee Paper Refill Pouch, 250g (barcode 8445292490665)
What to eat with it
- Royal Dansk Danish Butter Cookies, 340g: A box of butter cookies shares the pouch's cupboard-spare role, and their plain richness sits well against a strong, milky mug.
- Thomas Fudge's 6 Dark Chocolate Florentines: Dark chocolate florentines bring a bittersweet note that sits comfortably with a toasted, dark-roast coffee.
- Border Lemon Drizzle Melts Organic Biscuits, 150g: Lemon is an unexpected but useful contrast to a roasty instant, lifting a mug that leans heavy.

FAQ
Is the coffee in the Nescafé refill pouch the same as in the jar? Yes. It is Nescafé Original; only the container differs.
Is it fine to store the granules in the opened pouch? It is better not to. Move it into a clean, dry jar with an airtight lid on the day you open it, because soluble coffee takes on moisture and clumps.
Can I pour a new pouch on top of old granules? No. Finish the old granules first, or the bottom layer gets older with every refill.
What happens to the best before date? It stays on the pouch unless you move it, so write it on the jar or keep the snipped corner.
Which jar should I decant it into? Any clean, completely dry jar with a tight lid. An empty Nescafé Original jar is the obvious choice if you have one.
Curator's note: Keep one pouch in reserve at the back of the cupboard and you will never open an empty jar again. Just decant it the day it is opened, not a fortnight later. Lee, teas.co.uk, Tunbridge Wells.
