LCurator note · Nescafé
Nothing inside the pouch has changed; the argument is entirely about the pouch. What is in it is the standard Original granule, dark, toasted, low in acidity, with the bitter edge that makes it work with milk and sugar. The people who mark it down mostly wanted a jar, which tells you fairly precisely who should buy it and who should not. A pouch is flat, light and stackable, which is why it suits a spare at the back of a cupboard, a caravan, a site hut, a holiday let, a staff room that gets through coffee faster than anyone plans for. It is a poor thing to live out of on the counter for six weeks and was never meant to be one; tip it into something with a lid and the objection disappears. On the mug alone this is the ordinary Original story, and that story is a good one.

About this product

Nescafe Original Instant Coffee Paper Refill Pouch, in brief.

Nescafe Original Instant Coffee Paper Refill Pouch, 250g is the familiar Nescafe Original coffee in a paper-based pouch made to be tipped into a jar you already own. The coffee is unchanged: dark, toasted, low in acidity, with the edge of bitterness that makes it work with milk and sugar.

Buy the jar once, then refill. One practical note: a pouch is a poor long-term container, so tip it into a clean, dry, airtight jar on the day you open it and move the best before date across.

Nescafe Original Instant Coffee Paper Refill Pouch is the same coffee as the familiar jar, sold in a paper-based pouch designed to be tipped into a jar you already own. The coffee inside is unchanged: dark, toasted, low in acidity, with the deliberate edge of bitterness that makes Nescafe Original work with milk and two sugars. What changes is the container it arrives in, and for a lot of households that is the only thing that needed changing.

The logic is straightforward. A glass jar is a good thing to keep coffee in and a wasteful thing to buy repeatedly. Once you have one, a refill pouch gets the next 250g into the kitchen with considerably less packaging going out of it. The pouch is also lighter and flatter, which matters if you are carrying a week's shopping or storing a spare at the back of a cupboard. It is the same decision people have already made about washing powder and hand soap, arriving slightly later at the coffee shelf.

The Story Behind Nescafe

Nescafe is Nestle's soluble coffee brand and has been sold since 1938, which makes it one of the oldest continuously produced instant coffees anywhere. Original is the house blend the rest of the range is measured against, and it has stayed recognisably the same drink for decades, which is most of the reason people buy it. The refill pouch is a packaging format rather than a new recipe. Nestle runs the Nescafe Plan sourcing programme across the brand; the exact wording and any certification marks that apply to this pouch are printed on the current pack.

Packaging: Follow the current UK pack and local-authority guidance; the pouch and any closure can require different disposal routes, and paper-based laminates are not always accepted at kerbside.

Getting A Good Mug Out Of This Pouch

  • Water temperature: 90 to 95°C. Boiling water is the most common reason instant tastes harsh.
  • Measure: One rounded teaspoon per 200ml; add coffee rather than time, because there is no steeping to extend.
  • Dissolve: Paste first, then top up.
  • Milk: Good with dairy and oat. Almond tends to thin the body out and let the bitterness through.
  • Iced version: Two teaspoons in 40ml of hot water, sugar stirred in while warm, poured over a full glass of ice and topped with cold milk.
  • Caffeine note: A regular caffeinated coffee. The decaf version of Original is listed separately if you need it for the evening.
  • Best with: Buttered toast, a digestive, a bacon sandwich at half past seven.

Storage And Honest Notes

Do not store it in the pouch. Once opened, a refill pouch is a poor long-term container: it does not reseal as well as a screw lid and soluble coffee is hygroscopic, meaning it draws moisture from the air and clumps. Tip the lot into a clean, dry, airtight jar on the day you open it.

Ingredients and dietary suitability: Check the current UK pack before purchase; formulations and allergen advice can change.

On recycling: paper-based pouches are an improvement on rigid packaging by weight, but they are still multi-layer laminates and UK kerbside acceptance varies considerably by council. Check the on-pack instruction and your own local authority rather than assuming it goes in with the paper.

Best before: printed on the pouch. Instant coffee does not spoil the way fresh food does, but it fades, and an old jar tastes dusty rather than dark. Move the date onto the jar when you decant.

How does it compare

vs The standard Nescafe Original glass jarIdentical coffee, different container. The jar is the better buy the first time, because you need something to keep it in. After that the pouch is the sensible repeat purchase. Compare both product pages before deciding, because which works out cheaper moves around.
vs Nescafe Gold BlendGold Blend is the smoother, rounder, freeze-dried coffee with more aroma and less bite. Original is stronger and darker. If you drink it black, Gold Blend; if you take milk and sugar, Original.
vs Supermarket own-label instantUsually lighter in the cup, with more variation batch to batch. What you are paying for here is that the jar tastes the same in March as it did in January.

Instant coffee is forgiving but not indifferent. Water straight off a rolling boil scalds soluble coffee and produces a flat, papery bitterness that people usually blame on the brand. Letting the kettle stand for thirty seconds before pouring is the single change that improves most mugs of instant in this country.

Decanting The Pouch

01
Dry jarMake sure the jar is completely dry before you fill it. A damp jar will clump the granules within days.
02
Cut lowSnip a corner rather than tearing the top open, and pour slowly with the jar on the worktop. Granules travel further than you expect.
03
Do not top upEmpty the old jar first rather than pouring new coffee on top of stale. Use the last of the old jar, then refill.
04
Keep the labelMove the best before date across, either by writing it on the jar or keeping the cut-off corner of the pouch in the cupboard.

The Everyday Mug

01
MeasureOne rounded teaspoon, roughly 1.8g, per 200ml mug. Two if you take it strong.
02
WaterBoiled, then rested about half a minute, so you pour at around 90 to 95 degrees.
03
OrderGranules first, small splash of hot water, stir to a paste, then fill. This removes the grit at the bottom.
04
FinishMilk last, after the coffee has dissolved. Cold milk on dry granules is why mugs go gritty.

The Clean Decant

How to do The Clean Decant with Nescafe Original Refill Pouch.

3 min 1 jar Easy
You'll need
  • 1 pouch Nescafe Original Refill Pouch, 250g
  • A clean, completely dry airtight jar
  • Scissors
  • A marker pen
Method
  1. Finish the old jar first. Never pour fresh granules on top of older ones.
  2. Dry the jar thoroughly, inside and under the lid. A damp jar clumps the coffee within days.
  3. Snip one corner of the pouch, stand the jar on the worktop and pour slowly.
  4. Write the best before date from the pouch onto the jar before you throw the pouch away.

What you'll end up with: 250g of coffee that stays exactly as good as the day you opened it, and a date you can still read in four months' time.

The Paste-First Mug

How to make The Paste-First Mug with Nescafe Original.

2 min 1 mug Easy
You'll need
  • 1 rounded teaspoon Nescafe Original
  • 200ml water, boiled then rested 30 seconds
  • Milk to taste
  • Sugar to taste
Method
  1. Spoon 1 rounded teaspoon of Nescafe Original Instant Coffee into a dry mug.
  2. Add a tablespoon of the hot water and stir into a glossy paste.
  3. Fill with the rest of the water at 90 to 95°C.
  4. Finish with milk and sugar last, after the coffee has dissolved.

What you'll end up with: No grit at the bottom and no scalded harshness. Five seconds of extra work that fixes most complaints about instant coffee.

Builder's Iced Coffee

How to make Builder's Iced Coffee with Nescafe Original.

3 min 1 tall glass Easy
You'll need
  • 2 teaspoons Nescafe Original
  • 40ml hot water
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • A full glass of ice
  • 150ml cold milk
Method
  1. Dissolve 2 teaspoons of Nescafe Original Instant Coffee in 40ml of hot water.
  2. Stir the sugar in now, while it is still warm; it will not dissolve once cold.
  3. Fill a tall glass to the top with ice and pour the concentrate over.
  4. Top with 150ml of cold milk and stir once.

What you'll end up with: Cold suppresses bitterness, so the dark Original roast reads sweeter and rounder iced than it does hot.

Fridge Jug Cold Coffee

How to make Fridge Jug Cold Coffee with Nescafe Original.

5 min + chill 4 glasses Easy
You'll need
  • 4 teaspoons Nescafe Original
  • 100ml hot water
  • 500ml cold water
  • 2 teaspoons sugar, optional
Method
  1. Dissolve 4 teaspoons of Nescafe Original Instant Coffee and any sugar in 100ml of hot water.
  2. Top up the jug with 500ml of cold water and stir.
  3. Chill for at least two hours, or overnight.
  4. Serve over ice, black or with milk.

What you'll end up with: Cold coffee ready in the fridge for the week. Keeps two days covered; after that it tastes tired.

Coffee And Walnut Sponge Essence

How to make Coffee And Walnut Sponge Essence with Nescafe Original.

2 min 1 cake Easy
You'll need
  • 2 heaped teaspoons Nescafe Original
  • 1 tablespoon boiling water
  • Your usual sponge and buttercream recipe
  • Walnut halves to decorate
Method
  1. Slake 2 heaped teaspoons of Nescafe Original Instant Coffee in 1 tablespoon of boiling water to a thick dark syrup.
  2. Cool for a minute so it does not melt the butter on contact.
  3. Beat half into the buttercream and fold the rest into the sponge batter.
  4. Decorate with walnut halves once the cake is cool.

What you'll end up with: Strong coffee flavour with almost no added liquid, which is exactly what a sponge wants. Brewed coffee would water the batter down.

Coffee Rub For Slow-Cooked Beef

How to make Coffee Rub For Slow-Cooked Beef with Nescafe Original.

5 min + cooking Enough for a joint Easy
You'll need
  • 1 tablespoon Nescafe Original granules
  • 1 tablespoon soft brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1 teaspoon flaky salt and ground black pepper
Method
  1. Crush 1 tablespoon of Nescafe Original granules to a powder in a pestle and mortar.
  2. Mix with the brown sugar, smoked paprika, salt and plenty of black pepper.
  3. Rub all over a beef joint or short ribs and leave for an hour before cooking.
  4. Cook low and slow as you normally would; the rub builds a dark crust.

What you'll end up with: The finished meat does not taste of coffee. The roast bitterness reads as depth against the sugar, which is why this works.

Original is the house blend the rest of the range is measured against, and it has stayed recognisably the same drink for decades, which is most of the reason people keep buying it. The refill pouch changes the container and nothing else. Nestle runs the Nescafe Plan sourcing programme across the brand; the exact claims and certification marks that apply to this pouch are printed on the current UK pack.

What is in Nescafe Original Instant Coffee Paper Refill Pouch, 250g, and what is not:

  • In: soluble coffee, and nothing else. A single-ingredient product.
  • No artificial colours, preservatives or added sugar: what you taste is roast, not sweetener.
  • Packaging: paper-based pouches are still multi-layer laminates and UK kerbside acceptance varies by council. Follow the on-pack instruction and your local-authority guidance rather than putting it in with the paper on faith.
Formulations change; the current UK pack is always the final word on ingredients and allergens.
Product questions

Asked about this product

Yes. This is Nescafe Original, the same house blend, in a different container. Dark, toasted, low in acidity, with the deliberate edge of bitterness that lets it stand up to milk and sugar. The refill pouch is a packaging format, not a new recipe.
