The Story Behind The Jar
Azera is Nescafe's answer to the complaint that instant coffee smells of instant coffee. The fix was mechanical rather than chemical: mill roasted beans very finely and carry that micro-ground fraction along with the soluble, so that when the hot water goes in, some of the aroma comes from actual ground coffee rather than only from a freeze-dried extract. It is not a substitute for a cafetiere and it does not pretend to be. What it is, honestly, is the best cup available from a kettle and a spoon in ninety seconds.
The decaffeinated version takes the same construction and removes the great majority of the caffeine. Decaffeinated is not caffeine-free. A trace remains, as it does in all decaffeinated coffee, which matters if you are avoiding caffeine on medical advice rather than for sleep.

- 200ml water at about 95 degrees
- A splash of milk, optional
- Boil the kettle and let it stand for thirty seconds.
- Spoon the coffee into a dry mug, add a splash of the hot water and stir to a smooth paste.
- Fill to 200ml and stir once more.
- Taste it black before you decide on milk; the ground fraction is easier to read without it.
What you'll end up with: A clean decaffeinated americano with no floating lumps and a fine sediment in the last centimetre, which is exactly right.
Iced Decaf Americano
How to make Iced Decaf Americano with Nescafe Azera Americano Decaff.
- 1 rounded teaspoon Nescafe Azera Americano Decaff
- 30ml hot water, then 150ml cold
- A tall glass packed with ice
- A strip of orange peel, optional
- Dissolve the coffee in 30ml of hot water and stir to a smooth concentrate.
- Top with 150ml of cold water and stir once.
- Pour over a glass packed to the top with ice.
- Twist a strip of orange peel over the surface if you have one.
What you'll end up with: An iced coffee that tastes brewed rather than diluted, because the aroma work happens in the hot step.
Kettle Decaf Latte
How to make Kettle Decaf Latte with Nescafe Azera Americano Decaff.
- 1 heaped teaspoon Nescafe Azera Americano Decaff
- 40ml hot water
- 160ml whole or oat milk
- Paste the coffee with 40ml of hot water to make a small, dark concentrate.
- Heat 160ml of milk and whisk or froth it until it thickens slightly.
- Pour the milk onto the concentrate through the centre.

- 250ml hot water
- 500g mascarpone and 300ml double cream
- Cocoa powder to dust
- Dissolve 4 teaspoons in 250ml of hot water and leave it to go completely cold.
- Dip sponge fingers one at a time; two seconds each, no longer, or they collapse.
- Layer with sweetened mascarpone beaten into whipped double cream.
- Chill for at least six hours and dust with cocoa just before serving.

- 3 teaspoons Nescafe Azera Americano Decaff
- 200ml hot water
- •200g mixed dried fruit
- •250g self raising flour
- 150g soft brown sugar and 1 large egg
- Dissolve 3 teaspoons in 200ml of hot water and leave to cool.
- Soak 200g of mixed dried fruit in the cold coffee overnight.
- Beat in 250g of self raising flour, 150g of soft brown sugar and 1 large egg the next morning.
- Bake in a lined 2lb loaf tin at 170 degrees for 60 minutes.
What you'll end up with: A dark, damp fruit loaf that keeps for four days in a tin and tastes better on day two.

- 1 rounded teaspoon Nescafe Azera Americano Decaff
- 250ml hot water from the office tap
- Long-life milk pots, optional
- Spoon the coffee into a dry travel cup and paste it with a small splash of hot water.
