Nescafé Original 3 in 1, 8 Sachets: The Kettle-Only Coffee

Almost every disappointing 3 in 1 is the result of too much water. Get the cup size right and this sachet gives the same sweet, smooth white coffee every time, which is exactly what you want from it in a tent, a cabin or a car.

Nescafé Original 3 in 1, 8 Sachets: The Kettle-Only Coffee, in summary: A small cup, water that has rested a minute off the boil and a stir that reaches the bottom are what turn this sachet into a proper sweet white coffee. Eight sachets, eight cups, no fridge needed.

Almost every disappointing 3 in 1 is the result of too much water. Get the cup size right and this sachet gives the same sweet, smooth white coffee every time, which is exactly what you want from it in a tent, a cabin or a car.

The cup decides the drink

Sixteen grams of coffee, whitener and sugar is measured for roughly 150 to 180ml of water. That is a smaller cup than most people grab, and it matters more than anything else you do. Pour it into a 300ml mug and you halve the coffee, the sweetness and the body in one go, leaving something much closer to sugared water than to a drink.

If a sachet tastes too sweet, extra water is not a real answer, because it thins the coffee just as much as it thins the sugar. The sweetness was settled at the factory and cannot be adjusted afterwards. Anyone who drinks coffee without sugar is better served by the 2 in 1, which drops the sugar from the recipe and leaves the spoon to you.

Temperature and a proper stir

Pour once the kettle has been off for about a minute, which brings the water down to around 90 degrees. At a full rolling boil, whitener takes on the same cooked, slightly metallic note that scalded milk powder does. Keeping the water short helps the aroma too: a sachet that is mostly sugar and whitener has little coffee scent to spare, and less water concentrates what there is.

Then stir, and keep going until the spoon is scraping the base. Sugar settles, so a cup that is only swirled near the top starts thin and ends syrupy. A stir that reaches the floor of the cup is the whole fix. It needs nothing but a little patience, and it is the step most people skip when they are tired, cold or in a hurry.

What is in the box, and where it belongs

The published ingredient list starts with sugar and glucose syrup, then instant coffee at 11%, palm kernel oil and soluble fibre, with skimmed milk powder at 0.7% and milk proteins, lactose and milk fat further along. So it does contain milk, even though the whitening component, rather than milk, gives the colour and body. Check the current pack, since recipes can change.

Eight sachets of 16g, 128g in all, make eight cups, about right for a weekend away, a run of night shifts or a spare in the glovebox. The format exists for places without a kitchen: a tent, a site cabin, a hotel room with only a kettle. Judged against a cup made at home it is a compromise; judged against no coffee at all, it wins easily.

FAQ

How much water goes in a 3 in 1 sachet? About 150 to 180ml. More than that thins the coffee, sugar and whitener together.

Should the water be boiling? Not quite. Let the kettle rest for about a minute so you pour at around 90 degrees, which avoids a cooked taste in the whitener.

Why is the bottom of my cup so sweet? The sugar has sunk. Stir all the way down to the base before you drink.

Can I make Nescafé 3 in 1 less sweet? Not without weakening it, because extra water dilutes the coffee along with the sugar. The 2 in 1 is the version without sugar.

Do I need to add milk? No. The whitener is in the sachet, so hot water is all it needs, although the label does list milk ingredients.

Curator's note: Keep a box in the car and make it in the smallest cup you own. That single habit is the difference between a decent coffee and a let-down. Lee, teas.co.uk, Tunbridge Wells.
