The Story Behind Nescafe
Nescafe is Nestle's instant coffee brand and one of the best-known coffee names on any British shelf. The 3 in 1 sachet is a different proposition from the jars entirely: rather than selling you coffee and leaving the rest to your kitchen, it sells you the finished drink in a form that survives a rucksack. The format is enormously popular outside Britain, where a kettle and a sachet are often the whole of the available coffee equipment, and it has travelled back into British shopping baskets mainly through camping, caravanning, workplaces and travel.

What You Are Actually Buying
- Count and weight: eight sachets at sixteen grams each, so eight mugs and a hundred and twenty-eight grams in the box. The sixteen grams is why this feels more substantial in the mug than a plain instant.
- Three things in one: coffee, a whitening component and sugar. The 2 in 1 version is the same idea without the sugar, and it is the one to buy if you take your coffee unsweetened.
- Whitener, not milk: the whitening component is what gives the drink its colour and body without a fridge. Whether it is milk-derived varies by formulation, so anyone avoiding dairy must read the current UK pack rather than assume either way.
- Fixed sweetness: the sugar is dosed in the factory. There is no way to make this less sweet other than adding more water, which also makes it weaker.

Ideal Serving Conditions
A 3 in 1 has almost nothing left for you to get wrong, which makes the two remaining mistakes stand out. Both are about water: how much of it, and how hot.
The Proper Mug
- Measure: one sachet to 150 to 180ml. This is a smaller mug than most people reach for, and it is the difference between a proper drink and a weak one. A 300ml mug halves everything at once.
- Water: let the kettle stand for a minute after it clicks. Water at a rolling boil gives whitener the same cooked, faintly tinny edge it gives milk powder.
- Pour: sachet into a dry mug first, then the water. A wet mug makes the powder clump before the water reaches it.
- Stir: properly, and to the bottom. There is sugar in here and it sinks, so an under-stirred mug is weak at the top and syrupy at the end.
Getting More From the Sachet
- Make it stronger: half a teaspoon of plain instant granules stirred in dry lifts the coffee without adding sweetness. The most useful adjustment this format allows.
- Make it richer: use hot milk instead of water and you have a different drink entirely, though you have also given up the reason you bought a self-contained sachet.
- Make it cold: dissolve in a splash of hot water first, then pour over ice. Cold suppresses sweetness, so an iced 3 in 1 reads noticeably less sugary than a hot one.
- Make two half-mugs: in a group with only a few sachets left, one sachet split between two small cups with a little extra water is a better answer than one person going without.
Getting It Right in the Cup
- Water temperature: around 90 degrees Celsius, not straight off the boil.
- Measure: one sachet per 150 to 180ml. Small mug, not a big one.
- Method: powder into a dry mug, water in, stir right to the bottom.
- Storage: sealed and dry. Sugar and whitener take up moisture readily, and a split sachet in a damp cupboard sets into a solid block.
- Travelling: the whole argument for the format. Flat, light, unbreakable and complete in itself.
- Best with: a kettle and nothing else, which is precisely the situation it was designed for.

- 1 sachet Nescafe Original 3 in 1
- 150 to 180ml water at 90 degrees Celsius
- Boil the kettle and let it stand for a minute, so you are not pouring at a rolling boil.
- Empty the sachet into a dry mug, and pick a small mug rather than a big one.
- Pour 150 to 180ml of water over it, no more.
- Stir right down to the base of the mug, not just at the surface, because the sugar sinks.
What you'll end up with: A smooth, sweet white coffee with a proper body. If yours has ever tasted like sweet water, the mug was too big rather than the sachet too small.
The Strong One
How to make The Strong One with Nescafe Original 3 in 1.
- 1 sachet Nescafe Original 3 in 1
- Half a teaspoon of plain instant coffee granules
- 160ml water at 90 degrees Celsius
- Combine the sachet and the plain granules in a dry mug and mix them together dry.
- Pour 160ml of water over and stir thoroughly.
- Taste before adjusting. The sweetness has not changed, but there is more coffee standing against it.
- Scale to a full teaspoon on a night shift, when a 3 in 1 on its own will not do the job.
What you'll end up with: The fix most people want when they say a 3 in 1 is too sweet. The answer is more coffee rather than less sugar, because the sugar cannot be removed.
Iced 3 in 1
How to make Iced 3 in 1 with Nescafe Original 3 in 1.
- 1 sachet Nescafe Original 3 in 1
- 60ml hot water
- A full glass of ice
- A splash of cold water or milk
- Dissolve the sachet in only 60ml of hot water and stir until completely smooth.
- Cool the base for a minute so it does not melt the ice on contact.
- Fill a tall glass with ice and pour the base over it.
- Top up with a splash of cold water or milk and drink while the cubes are whole.
What you'll end up with: A long cold coffee that reads noticeably less sugary than the hot mug, because cold suppresses the perception of sweetness.
Flask Coffee for the Road
How to make Flask Coffee for the Road with Nescafe Original 3 in 1.
- 3 sachets Nescafe Original 3 in 1
- 500ml water at 90 degrees Celsius
- A pre-warmed flask
- Warm the flask with hot water first and pour it away, or the first cup arrives lukewarm.
- Mix three sachets to a smooth paste in a jug with a splash of hot water.
- Top up to 500ml, stir well, and pour into the flask straight away.
- Seal and take it with you. Three sachets to 500ml is deliberately strong, because flask coffee always tastes weaker than it did in the kitchen.

- 1 sachet Nescafe Original 3 in 1
- 4 tablespoons self-raising flour
- 3 tablespoons milk or water
- 2 tablespoons oil
- Mix the sachet with the flour in a large mug while everything is still dry.
- Stir in the liquid and the oil until you have a smooth thick batter with no pockets of flour.
- Microwave for 90 seconds, checking at 60. It is done when the top springs back.
- Rest for a minute before eating, because it comes out far hotter than it looks.
