Reading the label from the top

The order of the published list is telling. Sugar comes first, then skimmed milk powder at 18%, glucose syrup and coconut oil, with fat-reduced cocoa powder and instant coffee much further down. That is why the milk chocolate note leads, the milkiness sits soft and round in the middle, and the coffee is there mainly to stop the drink reading as plain hot chocolate.

The list also names lactose, and the allergen statement for this barcode says it contains milk, so it is not one for a milk-free household. Because the milk comes already in the powder, the box keeps in a cupboard and travels well: a kettle and a mug are the whole kit. As ever, check the current pack, since recipes and allergen advice can change.

Why Nescafé and KitKat share a sachet

The licence is less surprising than it looks. Both names belong to Nestlé in the UK, so the pairing was decided under one roof rather than struck between rivals. The name points the drink towards milk chocolate, not the darker, bitter side of a mocha, and that is what the mug delivers. There is no wafer and no piece of the bar in the powder; the name sets the direction of the flavour and nothing more.

That places the drink between two things. Anyone wanting a coffee that merely hints at chocolate will be happier with a plain cappuccino sachet or an ordinary jar of instant. Anyone after a sweet mid-afternoon mug in place of a snack, ready in half a minute and needing nothing from the fridge, is exactly who the box is for.

Richer, less sweet or better foamed

The sweetness is set inside the sachet, so you can add to it but never take it away. What you can do is rebalance the cup. Unsweetened cocoa, a teaspoonful added with the powder, gives it bitterness and depth, and stirring in a little plain instant, say half a spoon, brings the coffee forward. Using hot milk for part of the water gives a fuller, mocha-like mug.

For the water, let the kettle rest until it is around 90 degrees rather than pouring at a full boil. Then pour with some height and pace, since the foam is made by the water hitting the powder, and keep stirring to a minimum so the head survives. The foam keeps the chocolate aroma close as you sip, and that is most of the pleasure of a mug like this.

FAQ

Does Kit Kat Latte taste of KitKat? It is milk chocolate in a milky coffee rather than the bar itself, and there is no wafer in it.

Should I think of it as coffee or hot chocolate? Somewhere between, leaning towards chocolate. Cocoa and sugar lead, and instant coffee makes up only 2.9% of the recipe.

Do I need milk or any equipment? No. It is made with hot water in a mug, and hot milk for part of the water is an optional upgrade.

Can I make it less sweet? Not by removing sugar, since it is already in the sachet, but a little unsweetened cocoa or plain instant coffee rebalances the cup.

Is Kit Kat Latte suitable for someone avoiding milk? No. Nescafé's allergen statement for the Kit Kat Latte says it contains milk.

Curator's note: Keep a box for the mid-afternoon slump when a biscuit will not quite do. Pour from a height, stir once, and let the foam do its job. Lee, teas.co.uk, Tunbridge Wells.
