Nescafé Gold Blend Smooth: The Softest Jar in the Range

The fair test of a mild jar is not the first mug of the day but the fourth, and that is where Smooth earns its place. It has no sharp edges to wear you down, which also means it asks for a little care with the dose and the milk.

Published Curator-written, not crowdsourced
Nescafé Gold Blend Smooth: The Softest Jar in the Range, in summary: Smooth is the gentlest Gold Blend: light body, very little bitterness and a finish that clears. Keep milk to a splash, use a smaller mug or a second spoon if it tastes thin, and it drinks well all day.

The fair test of a mild jar is not the first mug of the day but the fourth, and that is where Smooth earns its place. It has no sharp edges to wear you down, which also means it asks for a little care with the dose and the milk.

One step lighter than the standard jar

The standard Gold Blend jar is the middle of the range. Intense pushes the roast dark for people who pour a lot of milk; Smooth goes the other way, keeping the same freeze dried character but lightening it, trimming the body and taking the bitterness down further. If the standard jar has always seemed a touch too present, this is the sideways step to take.

In the mug it tastes of lightly toasted grain more than cocoa, softly sweet from the roast, and the finish clears completely. The published ingredient list is simply soluble coffee, naming none of the major allergens. Because the aroma that survives freeze drying here is high and light rather than roasty, there is no darkness behind it to hide a badly made cup.

When a light jar tastes watery

The usual complaint about a mild instant is that it tastes of very little, and the cause is nearly always the size of the mug. A gentle coffee has to be concentrated enough to show itself; spread one spoonful across a big mug and it fades out. Try two rounded spoons in the same mug, or keep one spoon and use 150ml of water rather than 200ml. Neither fix needs a different jar.

The same logic applies to milk. Smooth is light in body, so a small splash suits it and a heavy pour pushes the coffee almost out of the drink. For a household of big milky mugs, Intense is the better choice. Water matters too: let the kettle stand for about thirty seconds so it lands at 90 to 95 degrees, because a rolling boil scalds a light jar with nothing dark to cover the burnt note.

A jar for the fourth mug of the day

Most people decide about a coffee from a single sip, but a jar that lives by the kettle should be judged across a whole week. Smooth is built for repeat drinking: nothing lingers, so a later mug tastes as fresh as the first rather than like one too many. At a rounded teaspoon of about 1.8g the 190g jar gives roughly 105 mugs, though light jars do tempt people into heaped spoons that shorten the count.

It suits the mid-morning moment when the kettle is on and the question is coffee or tea; a mug without edges often wins that contest. It works black or with a small splash, in the afternoon as much as the morning, and for anyone who finds dark instant a bit much. Those who want their coffee to shout should look at Intense instead.

FAQ

How does Smooth compare with the standard Gold Blend jar? Smooth is lighter in weight and gentler still on bitterness, with the same freeze dried character.

Why does my Gold Blend Smooth taste watery? The mug is probably too big for one spoon. Add a second rounded teaspoon or use 150ml of water instead of 200ml.

Smooth or Intense for milky coffee? Intense. Smooth suits black coffee or a small splash, and a big pour of milk flattens it.

Why does my jar of Smooth run out so quickly? Usually heaped spoons. A rounded teaspoon of about 1.8g gives roughly 105 mugs from the 190g jar, but a light coffee tempts people to pile the spoon higher.

Does Gold Blend Smooth contain anything besides coffee? The published ingredient list names soluble coffee alone and none of the major allergens. The current pack is the final word.

Curator's note: This is the jar to leave by the kettle for the visitor who always asks for a weak one. Keep the milk to a splash and it will not let them down. Lee, teas.co.uk, Tunbridge Wells.
