The name tells you how to make it: latte macchiato means stained milk, so the milk goes down first and the coffee marks it from above. Get that order right and the drink builds itself into layers in the glass; get it wrong and the same two pods give a flatter, muddier cup.
Stained milk: why the order matters
A latte is built from the coffee up; a latte macchiato runs the other way. The milk pod goes through the machine first and lays down a pale, foamed base, then the coffee pod follows and settles into a darker band through the middle, with foam left on top. Swap the pods round and the ingredients are identical, but the coffee spreads through the whole drink and the first sip lands quite differently. It is the simplest step of all and the one people most often miss.
Serve it in a clear glass if you have one, because the layering is part of the pleasure. The foam sitting between the coffee and your nose also changes how it smells, so the aroma reaches you softened and creamy rather than sharp and roasted. A sealed pod keeps its aroma until the machine pierces it, which is why this smells fresher than a jar of instant that has been open for weeks.
Counting the pods: the sixteen or the thirty
Every serving takes one milk pod and one coffee pod, and there is no way to stretch it. So the sixteen-pod box makes eight drinks and the thirty-pod box makes fifteen; the figure on the front is always double the number of glasses you will pour. Single-pod drinks in the same range give a cup per pod, which is why lining boxes up by pod count alone leads people astray.
The smaller box suits someone trying the drink for the first time or making it as an occasional treat. The larger one suits a household where it is the regular afternoon glass. Both hold the same pair of pods, so the choice comes down purely to how quickly you will get through them, and there is nothing to be gained from buying more than you will drink.
A milk drink first, a coffee second
The milk is the main event here, and the coffee plays a supporting part. The coffee is present but gentle, the bitterness is slight, and it comes across noticeably sweeter than a latte made with fresh milk from a jug, because the recipe is designed to taste finished straight from the machine with nothing added. If you want to taste the coffee first, a blacker capsule will suit you better. If you like a soft, creamy glass all the way down, this is the one.
Only a Nescafé Dolce Gusto machine will run these pods; they do not suit a Nespresso or a Tassimo, nor refillable pods made for other systems. Against something so smooth and sweet, a crunchy biscuit gives the best contrast: a milk chocolate Hobnob brings oaty bite, and a butterscotch crunch biscuit holds its snap beside a tall glass.

FAQ
How many glasses do the sixteen-pod and thirty-pod boxes make? Eight and fifteen. Each drink takes two pods, one milk and one coffee, so the count on the front is always double the number of glasses.
Which pod goes in first for a latte macchiato? Milk first, coffee second. That order is what gives the drink its layers.
What does latte macchiato mean? Stained milk. The drink starts as milk and is marked with coffee, the reverse of an ordinary latte.
Can I make a Dolce Gusto latte macchiato taste stronger? Not really. The ratio is sealed into the pods and the milk is always the bigger share, so anyone who wants to taste coffee first should pick a different box.
Why does it taste sweeter than a coffee-shop latte? The recipe is designed to be pleasant straight from the machine with nothing added, so it reads sweeter than fresh milk from a jug. The nutrition panel on the current pack gives the figures.
Curator's note: Use a clear glass and put the milk pod in first; watching it layer is half the fun. If you are a strong-coffee person this is not your box, and there is no shame in that. Lee, teas.co.uk, Tunbridge Wells.
