The Story Behind Pukka
Pukka is a Bristol herbal tea house that built its reputation on certification rather than on packaging, and this box carries two of its statements on the front: Organic, and Home Compostable. The second is worth pausing on, because most tea bags that claim compostability mean industrial composting, which needs a facility most households cannot reach. A home compostable bag means a garden heap.

What You Are Actually Buying
- Forty bags, sixty-four grams: one and six tenths of a gram a bag, a proper dose for a leaf infusion.
- Three mints rather than one: the difference is depth rather than strength. A single-mint tea gives you one note; this gives you a front, a middle and a finish.
- Certified organic, home compostable bags: both stated by the brand on the front of the box. The certifying body and the bag material are printed on the pack.
- No caffeine at all: there is no tea leaf in the blend, so there was none to remove and nothing has been decaffeinated. It can be drunk at any hour, which is most of why mint is the traditional after-dinner cup.
Getting It Right in the Cup
- Water temperature: 100°C, straight off the boil. Menthol needs the heat.
- Measure: one bag per 200 to 250ml.
- Cover it: the most important line here. An uncovered mint tea loses its best part to the room.
- Steep: four to five minutes, and longer does no harm; there is no tannin to turn bitter.
- Milk: no. It flattens the menthol entirely.
- Iced: four bags in 500ml for six minutes, cooled, poured over ice with a squeeze of lime. One of the best iced infusions there is.
- Storage: sealed, cool, dark and well away from everything else. Mint scents its neighbours, and a box of black tea kept beside it will taste of mint within a month.
- Best with: after a heavy or spicy meal, after chocolate, or as the cup that ends the evening.

How to make The After-Dinner Mug with Pukka Organic Three Mint.
- 1 bag Pukka Organic Three Mint
- 250ml water straight off the boil
- A saucer to cover the mug
- Pour 250ml of water straight off the boil over one bag.
- Cover the mug immediately, which traps the menthol-rich steam in the cup rather than losing it to the kitchen.
- Leave it four to five minutes; there is no tannin in it to turn bitter.
- Drink it clear, with nothing added.
What you'll end up with: A cold clean finish with a rounder green note behind it. Cover the mug and you will taste the difference against the same bag left open.
The Moroccan Pot
How to make The Moroccan Pot with Pukka Organic Three Mint.
- 3 bags Pukka Organic Three Mint
- 500ml water straight off the boil
- A small handful of fresh mint leaves
- 2 to 3 teaspoons sugar
- Steep three bags in 500ml for five minutes with the lid on, with the fresh mint dropped in alongside.
- Lift the bags out and leave the fresh leaves in the pot.
- Stir in the sugar while it is still hot, generously; this is the one mint tea that should be sweet.
- Pour from a height into small glasses, which aerates it.
What you'll end up with: A different drink from the plain mug rather than a sweetened version of it. The height of the pour is not showing off; it changes the texture.
Iced Mint Jug
How to make Iced Mint Jug with Pukka Organic Three Mint.
- 4 bags Pukka Organic Three Mint
- 500ml just boiled water
- Ice
- 1 lime, cut into wedges
- 500ml cold water
- Steep four bags in 500ml of just boiled water for six minutes, covered, then remove them.
- Top up with 500ml of cold water and chill the jug.
- Serve over ice with lime wedges squeezed in.
What you'll end up with: One of the best iced infusions there is, and it costs almost nothing. Cold service turns the menthol from a sensation into plain refreshment.
Mint Tea Mojito (Adult)
How to make Mint Tea Mojito (Adult) with Pukka Organic Three Mint.
- 2 bags Pukka Organic Three Mint
- 150ml just boiled water
- 50ml white rum
- Juice of 1 lime
- Crushed ice
- Steep two bags in 150ml for eight minutes to make a strong concentrate, then cool it completely.
- Fill a tall glass with crushed ice and add the lime juice and the rum.
- Top with the cold mint concentrate and stir up from the bottom.
What you'll end up with: A mojito with a deeper mint note than muddled leaves give you, because the infusion has drawn out the oils properly rather than bruising them.
Chocolate Mint Affogato
How to make Chocolate Mint Affogato with Pukka Organic Three Mint.
- 3 bags Pukka Organic Three Mint
- 120ml just boiled water
- 40g dark chocolate
- 4 scoops vanilla ice cream
- Steep three bags in 120ml for eight minutes to make a very strong mint concentrate.
- Melt the dark chocolate into the hot concentrate and stir until glossy.
- Pour the hot mint chocolate over vanilla ice cream at the table and eat it straight away.
What you'll end up with: After-dinner mint as a pudding. Mint is one of the very few things that works after chocolate, and here it arrives with it.

How to make Mint Syrup For The Fridge with Pukka Organic Three Mint.
- 6 bags Pukka Organic Three Mint
- 200ml just boiled water
- 150g caster sugar
- Peel of 1 lime
- Steep six bags in 200ml for fifteen minutes, covered, to make a very strong concentrate.
- Squeeze the bags out, then warm the liquid with the sugar and the lime peel until it has dissolved.
- Bottle it, keep it in the fridge and use it within two weeks.
What you'll end up with: A mint cordial for sparkling water, cocktails or pouring over fruit salad. Six bags out of forty is the kind of thing a large box makes reasonable.
