Latte macchiato means stained milk, and the order is the whole idea: milk goes into the glass first and coffee is brewed through it, which is why the drink sits in pale and dark bands under a foam cap. This Tassimo version puts the caramel in the milk disc and the L'Or roast in the coffee disc, and the machine handles the sequence.
Milk first, coffee second
In a latte, steamed milk is poured into coffee. A latte macchiato reverses that, and the change is more than cosmetic. Coffee brewed through milk already in the glass stains it rather than blending with it, so the drink tastes softer and milkier than a latte of the same size, and the glass shows it, with pale milk underneath, a coffee-coloured stripe above and foam over the lot.
Tassimo manages the sequence with a barcode on each disc. The code on the milk disc asks for a longer, gentler flow; the coffee disc gets a shorter, hotter one. Your part is pressing the button twice and choosing a tall clear glass so the layers can be seen. Drink it fairly soon, because the caramel aroma is strongest while the machine is still running.
What the label says about sweetness
The published ingredient list opens with cream from milk at 28%, then roast and ground coffee at 27%, then sugar, with flavourings further down. So this is a creamy, sweetened drink before it is anything else, and the allergen statement for this product names milk. Anyone who takes coffee black, or avoids dairy, should look elsewhere in the range.
The sugar and caramel flavouring sit sealed inside the milk disc, so every glass comes out equally sweet and there is nothing you can do to change that. What keeps it from tasting like warm caramel milk is the L'Or roast, which pushes against the sugar rather than alongside it and leaves some roasted edge in the middle of the glass. Bitterness stays low throughout.
Iced, and where it sits in the range
It ices well. Put plenty of ice in a tall glass and let the milk disc run onto it, then run the coffee in last, letting it fall onto an upturned spoon so the layers stay distinct. Skip any extra syrup: the disc has already done the sweetening, and more sugar only buries the coffee further.
On the same machine it sits between two neighbours. The plain L'OR Latte Macchiato gives the same layered build without the caramel, and the Costa Caramel Latte is a caramel drink made as a latte rather than a macchiato. Choose this box when you want both the layers and the caramel in one glass. Like every T DISC, it needs a Tassimo; Dolce Gusto and Nespresso machines will not take it.

FAQ
Is a latte macchiato the same as a latte? No. In a latte the milk goes into the coffee; in a latte macchiato the coffee goes through milk already in the glass, which is why it layers and tastes milkier.
Which disc goes in first? The milk disc, then the coffee disc, into the same glass. The barcode on each tells the machine how to brew it.
Can I make it less sweet? Not with these discs, since the sugar and caramel flavouring are inside the milk disc. For control over sweetness, sweeten a plain coffee disc yourself.
Does it contain milk? Yes. The published allergen statement for this product names milk, and cream from milk heads the ingredient list.
How many drinks does a box make? Each glass takes a milk disc and a coffee disc, so count drinks rather than discs; the serving number is printed on the current carton.
Curator's note: Save it for four o'clock rather than eight in the morning, and serve it in glass so the layers get noticed. With something plain on the side it stays a treat rather than turning into pudding. Lee, teas.co.uk, Tunbridge Wells.
