The second thing to understand is the barcode, which is the part that makes Tassimo different from every other pod system. Each disc carries a printed code, and the machine reads it before it brews anything. The code sets the water volume, the temperature and the flow, so the recipe is fixed at the factory rather than chosen at the counter.
The Barcode Is The Recipe
On most pod machines you have at least one lever: a short button and a long button, or a dial. On a Tassimo you effectively have none. The disc tells the machine what to do and the machine does it, which is genuinely useful if what you want is the same drink every time and genuinely limiting if you like to adjust.
That has three practical consequences worth knowing before you buy. You cannot make this drink stronger by pressing anything, because the volume is not yours to set. You cannot use these discs in a Nespresso, Dolce Gusto or any other machine, because the barcode is part of the format rather than a bonus feature. And you should not scratch, wet or peel the printed code, because a machine that cannot read it will not brew.
What you can change is the cup. A smaller cup makes the same drink read richer because it concentrates the head; a larger one spreads it thinner. And you can change what goes in afterwards, which is where most of the recipe tab below comes from.

Sweet, Milky And Honest About It
This is a flavoured milk coffee and it does not pretend otherwise. Caramel is named on the front of the pack, the milk element is built into the drink rather than added by you, and the result sits much closer to a high street treat than to a mug of black coffee. Judged as what it is, that is a perfectly good thing to want on a cold afternoon.
It does mean two things are true that are not true of a plain coffee. The drink contains milk, so it is not suitable for anyone avoiding dairy, and the full allergen statement is on the pack. And because the sweetness is built in, this is not a coffee you can dial back; if you find caramel drinks too sweet in a cafe you will find this one too sweet as well.
Our own view is that the caramel here works best when it is given something to push against. A pinch of salt in the cup, a square of dark chocolate alongside, or the drink poured over ice rather than served steaming all pull it back from cloying, and all three are in the recipes below.

- Keep the barcode clean: do not scratch, wet or peel it. A machine that cannot read the code will not brew.
- Descale on schedule: scale drops the brewing temperature, and a lukewarm milk drink is a bad one.
- Warm the cup: run a blank of hot water through first and tip it away.
- Stir it: the discs land in sequence and sit in layers until you mix them.
- Machine fit: Tassimo machines only. These discs will not work in a Nespresso, a Dolce Gusto or any other system.
- Best with: dark chocolate, a plain biscuit, shortbread, or on its own mid-afternoon.

- Fresh water in the tank
- A warmed 250ml to 300ml cup
- Warm the cup with a blank shot of hot water and tip it away.
- Run the discs in the order printed on the box, both into the same cup.
- Stir once. The two discs land in layers and will not mix on their own.
What you'll end up with: The drink as the recipe intends it: sweet, milky and warm, with the coffee sitting behind the caramel. This is the baseline to judge the rest against.

- A pinch of fine sea salt
- A warmed cup
- Brew the drink exactly as normal into a warmed cup.
- Add a pinch of fine sea salt while it is still hot and stir it through.
- Taste before adding any more. A little goes a long way.
What you'll end up with: The same drink pulled back from cloying. Salt suppresses the perception of sweetness, so the caramel reads as caramel rather than as sugar. It is the cheapest upgrade available here.

How to make Iced Caramel Latte with Tassimo Costa Caramel Latte.
- 1 Tassimo Costa Caramel Latte serving
- A tall glass packed to the top with ice
- A splash of cold milk, optional
- Fill a tall glass to the top with ice. Three cubes will not do it.
- Brew both discs straight over the ice rather than into a mug.
- Stir hard and top with a splash of cold milk if you want it longer.
What you'll end up with: A cleaner, less sweet drink than the hot version, because cold suppresses sweetness on the tongue. Brewing hot and adding ice afterwards gives you a lukewarm sweet drink instead.
Caramel Affogato
How to make Caramel Affogato with Tassimo Costa Caramel Latte.
- 1 Tassimo Costa Caramel Latte serving
- 2 scoops vanilla ice cream
- Grated dark chocolate
- Scoop the ice cream into a cold bowl.
- Brew the drink straight over it while it is properly hot.
- Finish with grated dark chocolate and eat it at once.
What you'll end up with: A pudding rather than a drink. The dark chocolate is doing the same job as the salt in the second recipe: giving the caramel something bitter to push against.
Blended Caramel Frappé
How to make Blended Caramel Frappé with Tassimo Costa Caramel Latte.
- 1 Tassimo Costa Caramel Latte serving, cooled
- 8 to 10 ice cubes
- 50ml cold milk
- Brew the drink into a jug and let it cool for ten minutes, or chill it.
- Blend with the ice and the cold milk until smooth and thick.
- Pour into a tall glass and drink straight away, before it separates.
