The Story Behind The Disc
Costa is the British coffee house chain that grew out of a London roastery and now sells coffee on more high streets than almost anyone else in the country. The at-home range carries that name onto supermarket shelves, and the Tassimo discs are the single-serve end of it. Tassimo itself is the Bosch single-serve system: every disc carries a printed barcode, and the machine reads that code before it brews, setting the water volume and the brew for that specific drink. It is the reason an Americano disc and a milk disc behave completely differently in the same machine without anybody touching a dial.

Getting The Best From Every Disc
- Water: Fresh, and filtered if you live somewhere hard. Hard water flattens the aromatic top of a black coffee faster than it does a milk drink.
- Cup: Pre-warmed, and no bigger than the drink. A long coffee in an oversized mug loses heat across the surface.
- Machine: Descale on the schedule in the manual. Scale changes the flow rate, and a slow draw pulls a harsher cup out of the same disc.
- Storage: Keep the discs in the box, somewhere cool and dry. They are sealed individually, so the enemy is heat rather than air.
- With milk: A splash turns it into a white Americano; a full third of a mug takes it closer to a milky filter coffee.
- Caffeine note: This is caffeinated coffee. The amount per cup is not something we state; if you need a figure, the current pack is the place to look.
- Best with: Toast and marmalade, a bacon sandwich, plain biscuits, anything that wants a dry coffee alongside rather than a sweet one.

How to make the straight Americano with Tassimo Costa Americano.
- 1 Tassimo Costa Americano disc
- Fresh water in the tank
- A pre-warmed mug
- Run a water-only cycle into the mug and tip it away, so the cup is warm before the coffee lands in it.
- Drop one disc into the holder with the barcode facing the reader and close the machine.
- Brew and let it finish on its own; the end of the draw is what balances the cup.
- Drink it black first, then decide about milk.
What you'll end up with: A long black coffee with a dry, clean finish, ready in under a minute and identical every time.
Iced Americano
How to make an iced Americano with Tassimo Costa Americano.
- 1 Tassimo Costa Americano disc
- A tall glass packed with ice
- Sugar syrup, optional
- A strip of orange peel, optional
- Fill a tall glass to the top with ice; too little ice and the drink just goes warm and dull.
- Brew the disc straight over the ice so the coffee chills as it lands.
- Stir once, add sugar syrup if you want it sweet, and twist a strip of orange peel over the top.
- Top up with fresh ice if the first lot has melted away.
What you'll end up with: A cold, sharp black coffee that keeps its roast character instead of tasting stewed, which is what happens when you cool a hot cup slowly.
White Americano
How to make a white Americano with Tassimo Costa Americano.
- 1 Tassimo Costa Americano disc
- 50ml whole or oat milk
- Fresh water in the tank
- Warm the milk in a pan or microwave until it steams, but do not boil it.
- Brew the disc into a warmed mug.
- Pour the hot milk down the side of the mug and stir once.
- Taste before sweetening; warm milk brings out enough caramel that most people do not reach for sugar.
What you'll end up with: A softer, rounder coffee with the roast edge taken off, closer to a high-street white Americano than to a latte.
Mug Mocha
How to make a mug mocha with Tassimo Costa Americano.
- 1 Tassimo Costa Americano disc
- 2 squares dark chocolate, chopped
- 60ml hot milk
- A pinch of salt
- Put the chopped chocolate and the pinch of salt in the bottom of a warmed mug.
- Brew the disc straight onto the chocolate and stir until it has melted completely.
- Add the hot milk and stir again.
- Finish with a little grated chocolate on top if you are feeling generous.
What you'll end up with: A proper mocha built on brewed coffee rather than powder, with the dark roast of the disc standing up to the chocolate instead of hiding under it.
Affogato, The Short Cut
How to make an affogato with Tassimo Costa Americano.
- 1 Tassimo Costa Americano disc
- 2 scoops vanilla ice cream
- Toasted hazelnuts, chopped, optional
- Put two scoops of vanilla ice cream in a cold bowl or a small glass.
- Brew the disc into a jug, then pour just half of it over the ice cream; the full cup is too long for an affogato and floods the bowl.
- Scatter the hazelnuts over the top and eat it straight away.
- Keep the other half of the coffee for yourself.
Coffee For Four, Without A Pot
How to make coffee for four with Tassimo Costa Americano.
- 4 Tassimo Costa Americano discs
- A warmed jug
- Hot milk on the side
- Sugar on the side
- Warm the jug with hot water from the tap and tip it out.
- Brew four discs one after another straight into the jug, running the machine back to back so it stays up to temperature.
- Carry the jug through with hot milk and sugar alongside and let everyone build their own.
- Do not let the jug stand more than ten minutes; brewed coffee goes dull long before it goes cold.
