Tassimo milk drinks are built from two discs, one carrying the milk preparation and one the coffee, run one after the other into the same cup. Knowing that makes sense of the box, which holds both kinds of disc, and of the running order printed on the carton.
Two discs to every cup
Each caramel latte needs a milk disc plus a coffee disc, and the box holds both kinds, so check the carton for how many drinks it makes rather than counting discs. The box prints the running order; as a rule the milk goes in first and the coffee follows into the same cup. Stir once when it finishes: with a two-disc build the layers arrive one after another, and the drink changes as you go down the cup if you leave it unstirred.
Behind all of this sits the barcode. Every T DISC carries one, and the machine reads it to set the brewing time, temperature and water volume, so the drink is decided when the disc is made, not when you press start. No button makes it stronger. The lever you do have is the cup: choose a small one for a richer drink, since a big one dilutes the same two discs. Keep the printed code clean and undamaged, or the machine will not brew.
What the label says about the sweetness
The published ingredient list starts with cream from milk at 29%, then sugar, then roast and ground coffee at 22%, followed by water, milk protein concentrate, milk minerals, salt, a thickener, flavourings and an acidity regulator. Sugar sitting second tells you most of what you need to know: the sweetness is built in and cannot be adjusted, and the caramel character comes from flavourings rather than anything you add at the machine.
Milk runs through the whole recipe, so it is no drink for a dairy-free household, and the label marks the coffee as Rainforest Alliance Certified. Anyone who already finds café caramel drinks cloying should expect the same here. Salt is the simplest correction: a few grains stirred through the hot drink dull the sugar and let the caramel note come forward instead of plain sweetness.
When it earns its place
Black-coffee drinkers can skip it. Here the milk and caramel are the point and the coffee is the backdrop, with the roast kept in the background and very little bitterness. It comes into its own around four o'clock, as a sweet break that stands in for the biscuit tin as much as the coffee pot, and it is caffeinated, so it is an afternoon cup rather than a late-night one.
A smaller cup makes it read richer, and a glass lets you watch the layers settle before you stir. Because the drink is already sweet, choose biscuits for contrast rather than more sugar: dark chocolate, ginger or a plain butter biscuit all work better than a caramel cookie would. The discs fit Tassimo machines only, not Nespresso or Dolce Gusto, so check the brewer before you order.

FAQ
Why does one latte need two discs? Tassimo builds its milk drinks from a milk disc and a coffee disc run into the same cup, and the box holds both kinds. The carton states how many drinks it makes.
Which disc goes in first? Check the running order printed on the box. Usually the milk disc goes first, with the coffee disc following into the same cup.
Can I make it less sweet? The sugar is built in, but a few grains of salt stirred into the hot drink soften the sweetness noticeably.
Does it contain milk? Yes. Cream from milk is the first ingredient, with milk protein concentrate and milk minerals further down the list.
Will the discs fit a Nespresso or Dolce Gusto machine? No. The machine reads a barcode printed on each T DISC, and only Tassimo machines can do that.
Curator's note: Save it for four o'clock and put something dark and chocolatey beside it. As a treat it works; as a coffee it was never trying to. Lee, teas.co.uk, Tunbridge Wells.
