A mocha is a compromise between chocolate and coffee, and this one leans firmly towards the chocolate. Anyone expecting a cappuccino with a hint of cocoa will be disappointed; anyone wanting a hot chocolate with something underneath it will find it pitched exactly right.
Reading the label: cocoa before coffee
The published ingredient list explains the drink. Skimmed milk powder comes first, then sugar, then fat-reduced cocoa at 13.5%, and only then soluble coffee at 7.6%. By that measure there is nearly twice as much cocoa as coffee, and the coffee is soluble, the instant kind, rather than roast and ground. It shows up as a light roasted note towards the finish, there to keep the sweetness in check rather than to lead.
Two more details on the label are worth knowing. Milk runs right through it, from the skimmed milk powder to a milk-based flavouring, so it will not suit a dairy-free house. And alongside the sugar there is a sweetener, E960a. The sweetness is sealed into the disc and there is no setting on the machine that changes it, so if you prefer less sweet drinks, this is not one you can adjust at the button.
Where it sits among the Tassimo discs
Among the Tassimo discs we stock, this sits between two neighbours. The Cadbury Hot Chocolate is the plain chocolate drink; the Mocha adds a roasted undercurrent for the adult who finds hot chocolate a little soft. The Costa Cappuccino goes the other way entirely, a proper milk-foamed coffee where the roast leads and chocolate plays no part, and it is the better choice first thing in the morning.
That places the Mocha in the afternoon and evening. It suits the stretch between four o'clock and the end of the day, a cold Sunday, or the moment after a big dinner when a pudding feels like too much. There is real coffee in the disc and it is caffeinated, so keep that in mind if it is going to be the very last cup of a late night.
Stir once, rinse after
Stir it once, straight after the machine finishes. The cocoa starts to sink almost as soon as the cup is full, leaving the top thin and the last mouthful gritty. If the sweetness is too much, a few flakes of sea salt take the edge off it, and a square of dark chocolate dropped in while it is hot supplies the bitterness that Cadbury's milky style avoids.
Then look after the brewer. Chocolate and milk leave a film in the outlet that sours fast, so a stale or sour cup is usually a cleaning problem rather than a bad disc. Put a water-only rinse through after each chocolate drink and keep up with descaling. The discs fit Tassimo machines only, and the number of discs on the box is not always the number of drinks, so read the current pack for that.

FAQ
How much coffee is in a Tassimo Cadbury Mocha? The label lists soluble coffee at 7.6% against 13.5% cocoa, so the coffee is a background note and the chocolate leads.
Does it contain milk? Yes. Skimmed milk powder is the first ingredient, and the flavouring is milk-based too.
Can I make it less sweet? Not at the machine. A few flakes of sea salt or a square of dark chocolate stirred in will pull the sweetness back.
Will the discs work in a Dolce Gusto or Nespresso machine? No. The machine reads a barcode printed on each disc, and only Tassimo machines can do that.
Why does my mocha taste stale? Usually because of residue in the machine outlet. Rinse with water after every chocolate drink and descale regularly.
Curator's note: Do not buy it as a coffee. Buy it as the hot chocolate for grown-ups, stir it once, and save it for a cold afternoon when nothing else quite fits. Lee, teas.co.uk, Tunbridge Wells.
