Nescafé Cappuccino Sachets: A Whole Drink From a Kettle

A Nescafé Cappuccino sachet is a complete milky coffee in powder form, with the coffee, milk and sugar measured out for one mug and nothing needed but hot water.

Nescafé Cappuccino Sachets: A Whole Drink From a Kettle, in summary: Coffee, milk powder, sugar and the foam, all in one sachet that needs only hot water. This is the sweetened, caffeinated version; seven sachets make seven mugs, and a brisk stir builds the head.

A Nescafé Cappuccino sachet is a complete milky coffee in powder form, with the coffee, milk and sugar measured out for one mug and nothing needed but hot water. Its real rival is a spoon of instant with cold milk splashed in, not a café cappuccino, and against that it earns its place at work, on holiday and in the caravan.

Sugar first, then milk, then coffee

The published ingredient list starts with sugar, followed by skimmed milk powder at 20%, glucose syrup and instant coffee at 12%. Coconut oil and lactose come next, then small amounts of acidity regulators, salt and natural flavourings. Milk appears twice, as skimmed milk powder and as lactose, and the allergen statement confirms that the sachets contain milk.

Read in that order, the list explains the cup: sweet through the middle, creamy, with the coffee as a gentle roasted background rather than a sharp edge. Bitterness is low. The aroma is quieter than people expect, because the milk fats hold some of the coffee aromatics back, so a mild smell tells you very little about how much caffeine is in the mug.

Choosing between the Nescafé cappuccino boxes

This seven-sachet box is the sweetened, caffeinated standard version, and seven sachets is about a week of one a day. If you get through more, we also stock a twelve-sachet box. If you take coffee without sugar, the Unsweetened Taste box is the same drink without it, and since sugar cannot be taken back out of a blended mix, that is the box to buy.

It is not a decaf. Cappuccino Decaf Unsweetened Taste is the evening option, and it drops the sugar as well. For a caramel-flavoured mug, the Caramel Latte sachets sit alongside. Whichever box you pick, one sachet is dosed for one mug and is not meant to be split, so buy by how many cups you drink rather than hoping to stretch a pack.

Building a better head of foam

Thin foam usually comes down to three things: water at a rolling boil, a mug filled to the brim and a timid stir. Give the kettle about thirty seconds after it clicks, use around 180ml rather than a full mug, and stir hard for a good few seconds. The head forms as you stir, so an impatient spoon is the usual reason people give up on these.

Because no fresh milk is involved anywhere, the box needs no fridge, which is exactly why it is the pack people take to the office or away for the weekend. Drink the mug soon after making it, while the head is still standing, because the foam is most of the pleasure and the reason to choose a sachet over a plain instant.

FAQ

Does a Nescafé Cappuccino sachet need milk adding? No. Skimmed milk powder is already in the mix, so hot water alone gives the finished drink.

Is Nescafé Cappuccino sweetened? Yes. Sugar is the first ingredient on the published list; the Unsweetened Taste box is the one to buy if you take coffee without sugar.

Is Nescafé Cappuccino decaf? No, it is caffeinated. Nescafé Cappuccino Decaf Unsweetened Taste is the decaf version.

Why is the foam on my instant cappuccino thin? Usually boiling water, a brimming mug or a half-hearted stir. Rest the kettle, use about 180ml and stir hard.

Does a mild-tasting cappuccino sachet mean less caffeine? Not necessarily. A creamy sachet can carry as much caffeine as a sharper cup, so do not read the gentle taste as a weaker dose.

Curator's note: Stir it like you mean it and do not fill the mug to the top. It is no café cappuccino, but as a kettle-only coffee it does its job very well. Lee, teas.co.uk, Tunbridge Wells.
