A decaf you would pick for its flavour is rarer than it ought to be, and this tin earns its place by keeping a roasted smell and a proper finish. It is the Azera for nine in the evening, built around a large mug rather than a small strong cup.
Finely ground beans, minus the caffeine
Azera blends finely ground roasted coffee into soluble coffee rather than selling granules on their own. The granules dissolve in seconds and supply the strength, while the ground coffee acts more like a very short brew, restoring body and a roasted aroma lost when coffee is dried into granules, which is why the tin smells of roasted coffee rather than of instant when you lift the lid.
Taking the caffeine out rounds the coffee off, and the blend is designed to be drunk long, so bitterness stays low and soft. Expect medium strength that only makes sense judged in a 250ml mug; squeezed into a 150ml cup, the same spoonful turns muddy. The mug also feels weightier than ordinary granules manage, thanks to that ground fraction.
What decaffeinated actually promises
Decaffeinated and caffeine free are different claims. There is a legal ceiling in the UK on how much caffeine may remain in coffee sold as decaffeinated, yet some always does. Most people making an evening mug are happy with that. Anyone told to avoid caffeine entirely, rather than simply to cut down, should treat the difference as real and read the current pack.
We carry two decaf Azeras, and the choice comes down to habit. This 135g tin makes somewhere near fifty large mugs, which suits someone who has a decaf most evenings. The 90g Azera Americano Decaff is the smaller buy for an occasional cup. Anyone wanting the caffeine back in the morning can choose between the standard Azera Americano and Azera Americano Intense.
Making the evening mug
Think americano: a generous dose in plenty of water. A rounded to heaped teaspoon, about 2.5g, goes into a 250ml mug. Most weak-tasting mugs of this come down to a small teaspoon in a small cup, so be generous with both the coffee and the water, and judge it only once you have made it the long way.
The ground fraction scalds where plain granules only dissolve, so water at a rolling boil can make a soft decaf taste harsh. Let the kettle sit for about thirty seconds, so the water is somewhere around 90 to 95°C when it meets the coffee. Close the lid firmly between mugs, so a tin opened every night keeps its roasted smell for longer.

FAQ
Can I drink Azera Decaf if I have to avoid caffeine completely? Take care. Most of the caffeine is removed, but a trace always remains in decaffeinated coffee, so check the current pack.
What does 'with finely ground beans' mean? Finely ground roasted coffee is mixed into the soluble granules, so the mug gains body and a roasted smell that plain instant lacks.
How much Azera Decaf should I use? About 2.5g, a rounded to heaped teaspoon, in a 250ml mug.
Why does my decaf taste harsh? Usually the water was at a full boil. Give the kettle about half a minute off the boil before pouring onto the decaf.
Should I buy the 90g Azera Decaff or the 135g tin? The tin if you drink decaf most evenings, the 90g if it is an occasional cup.
Curator's note: Make it big and let the kettle rest. Done that way, it is a decaf you drink because you like it, not because it is late. Lee, teas.co.uk, Tunbridge Wells.
