Nescafé Azera Americano: An Instant Built for Black Coffee

Azera Americano smells like brewed coffee the instant hot water lands on it, and that is entirely down to the small share of real ground coffee in the jar. It is the Azera to buy if you drink your coffee black at work and want more aroma than a plain instant gives.

Nescafé Azera Americano: An Instant Built for Black Coffee, in summary: Soluble coffee with 5% roast and ground coffee blended in, roasted medium and meant for drinking black. Let the kettle settle before pouring, use about 2g per 200ml and expect a little silt at the bottom.

Azera Americano smells like brewed coffee the instant hot water lands on it, and that is entirely down to the small share of real ground coffee in the jar. It is the Azera to buy if you drink your coffee black at work and want more aroma than a plain instant gives.

Soluble for strength, ground coffee for aroma

The published ingredient list is short: soluble coffee, then roast and ground coffee at 5%. The granules melt away and carry the strength. The ground part holds its aromatic compounds inside the coffee particles until hot water reaches them, rather like a cafetière, which is why the kitchen fills with a brewed smell and why the mug has more weight than a plain instant.

The ground coffee does not dissolve, so it settles as a fine silt in the last centimetre. Stir, give it half a minute to settle, and leave the final mouthful where it is. If a spotless mug matters more to you than aroma, a freeze dried jar is the better buy. None of the 14 major allergens appears in the published ingredient list.

Where it sits in the Azera line-up

This is the medium roast among the four Azera coffees we stock: nutty, clean and restrained in bitterness, nearer a coffee-shop long black than anything dark and espresso-like. Azera Americano Intense, as the name signals, is the tin for anyone after a bolder cup, while the 90g Americano Decaff and the 135g Decaf Americano cover the evening.

Against Nescafé Original, Azera Americano is lighter, brighter and more aromatic, while Original is darker and built for milk and sugar. Americano names a drink style, the long black coffee, rather than where the beans grew. At the recommended measure the 140g jar makes roughly seventy mugs, which lasts one regular drinker somewhere between two weeks and a month.

Why the kettle should wait

Plain soluble coffee only dissolves, so water temperature matters less with it. The ground fraction in Azera behaves more like brewed coffee, and a full rolling boil scorches it and draws out harshness. Let the kettle stand for thirty to forty seconds after it clicks off, then pour. That short pause is the easiest improvement you can make to the mug.

Around 2g to a 200ml mug is the target, roughly one to two rounded teaspoons; begin at one and a half heaped and adjust from there. Nothing steeps, so the dose is your only strength control. Azera Americano is made for black, though a splash of milk is fine. Keep the lid closed tight, because aroma is the first thing an open jar loses.

FAQ

Should Azera Americano be drunk black? That is what it is built for, with a splash of milk at most. Heavy milk and sugar bury the aroma the ground coffee adds.

Why let the kettle stand before making Azera? Boiling water scorches the ground coffee in the blend and makes the mug harsh. Thirty to forty seconds off the boil is enough.

How many mugs does a 140g jar of Azera Americano make? Roughly seventy at around 2g per mug.

How does Azera Americano compare with Gold Blend? Gold Blend is freeze-dried, smooth and leaves a clean mug. Azera trades a little sediment for noticeably more aroma and body, thanks to its ground coffee.

Why is there sediment in the mug? It is the ground coffee settling out, and it is expected. Leave the last mouthful in the mug.

Curator's note: Give the kettle half a minute, drink it black, and the point of this jar is obvious from the first sip. Loading it with milk and sugar throws away the reason to buy it. Lee, teas.co.uk, Tunbridge Wells.
