Lavender is the whole question with this box: it is the note that makes the blend recognisable and the one that splits a room. Time the steep and it sits as a floral top note over soft chamomile; leave the bag in and it takes over the mug.
Chamomile, lemon and lavender at work
Everything in the name is doing something. Chamomile flowers make up the body of the cup, soft and faintly apple-like with a dry, hay-like note underneath. Lemon runs across the top as a bright edge, and it is the reason two flowers in one bag never turn heavy. Lavender supplies the floral signature, clearly present but held back rather than dominant.
Twenty bags share 30g, so each holds around one and a half grams of dried botanicals, a normal dose for a light flower infusion. The word organic is in the product's name, and the cup is caffeine-free, which is why it sits at the after-dinner end of Clipper's shelf alongside the peppermint and spearmint rather than with the black teas.
Why the lavender needs watching
Lavender gives up its scent faster than almost anything else in a tea bag, so it is the first thing you smell when the water goes on, and it can make the aroma seem far more floral than the drink turns out to be. Taste before you judge. In the mug the order reverses: chamomile leads and the lavender settles in behind it.
The catch is that lavender carries on releasing flavour after the chamomile is spent. Use water just off the boil, cover the mug and give it four to five minutes, then take the bag out. If it still reads as perfume to you, cut the steep to three minutes, or put a plain chamomile bag in with it to thin the floral note while keeping the body.
Who it suits, and what to eat with it
Buy a single box before committing to more. If you already like lavender, this is a balanced version with the chamomile carrying the weight; if you have never tried a lavender infusion, one box of twenty is the sensible way to find out. Anyone who wants chamomile alone, without the floral signature, would be happier with a plain chamomile.
We would drink it as it comes, with no milk to mute the flowers. Sleep Time is a name on the box rather than a promise, so treat it simply as a quiet, caffeine-free way to end the evening. Food should be plain and gentle: an oat biscuit or a buttery crunch sits under lemon and lavender without arguing with them.

FAQ
What does the lavender taste like in this blend? Floral and distinct but restrained. Some people find it the best part of the cup; others find it reminds them of soap.
Does Clipper Sleep Time contain caffeine? No. It is a caffeine-free herbal infusion of chamomile, lemon and lavender.
How long should I steep chamomile, lemon and lavender? Four to five minutes, covered, in water just off the boil, then lift the bag out so the lavender does not take over.
The lavender is too much for me. What can I change? Steep for three minutes instead, or brew it with a plain chamomile bag to soften the floral note.
Who certifies it as organic? Clipper states organic in the name itself; look on the current box for the certifier and any further marks.
Curator's note: Cover the mug and set a timer: at five minutes the lavender is charming, at ten it is bossy. I would never put milk anywhere near it. Lee, teas.co.uk, Tunbridge Wells.
