Teapigs becomes employee owned

Teapigs founders Nick Kilby and Louise Cheadle have transferred majority ownership to the team via an Employee Ownership Trust. Pricing and sourcing stay the same. The pyramid temples and the supply chain are unchanged. Lee approves.

Employee ownership trusts have been quietly reshaping British SMEs since the 2014 tax change that made the structure viable. Founders sell their shares to a trust held permanently for the workforce. No private equity, no trade buyer, no exit clock ticking. Riverford Organic and Aardman Animations went the same route in recent years.

Teapigs was founded in 2006 by Nick Kilby and Louise Cheadle, both ex-Tetley, and built its name on whole leaf "tea temples" in a market still dominated by dust grade bags. The brand has stayed independent through nearly two decades of UK grocery consolidation. The EOT step keeps it that way.

For shoppers, the practical answer is: nothing visible. The blends are still blended by the same buyers. The temple bags still get filled at the same packing line.
