Twinings Peppermint 80, 160g
Nothing in the bag but peppermint. It reads as cooling while the cup is still physically hot, which is the trick menthol plays on the mouth, and it clears the palate completely after something rich or spicy. Five minutes with a saucer over the mug, not three uncovered. There is no tannin here to turn harsh, so a long steep costs you nothing and a short one leaves half of it behind. No caffeine, so it suits the end of an evening.

The Story Behind The Box
Twinings has traded as a London tea house since 1706, and the herbal range is a much later addition to a business built on black tea. Peppermint is the line in it that needs no explaining: a single dried leaf, in a bag, in water.
There is very little to say about the recipe because there is very little recipe. What matters instead is the dose and the format, and both come off the pack: 160g across 80 bags, 2g a bag, one bag a mug, 80 mugs. Everything else belongs to the carton in your hand. We would rather send you to the pack than print a guess.
The one thing worth knowing before you buy a box of 80 is that peppermint does not agree with everyone. People who get heartburn often find peppermint makes it worse rather than better. If that is you, buy a small box of something else first rather than a household pack of this.

Peppermint is the opposite problem to black tea. There is no tannin here to turn harsh, so a long steep will not ruin it; what a short steep will do is leave half the menthol in the bag. Give it five minutes and keep the lid on.

The Five Minute Mug
The after-dinner build, and the saucer that keeps the mint in the cup instead of in the room.
- 1 peppermint tea bag
- 200 to 250ml water at 100 degrees
- A slice of lemon, optional
- Pour water straight off the boil onto the bag in the mug.
- Cover with a saucer and leave it five minutes, not three.
- Lift the bag out, or leave it in; there is no tannin to turn harsh.
- Add a slice of lemon if you find it too sweet. No milk.
What you'll end up with: A properly cooling, naturally sweet cup that needs no sugar, and one you can drink at any hour without consequences.
Moroccan-Style Mint Pot
Fresh mint on top of dried, poured from a height, and sweetened the traditional way.
- 3 peppermint tea bags
- 750ml water at 100 degrees
- A large handful of fresh mint
- 2 to 3 teaspoons sugar
- Warm the pot, then add three bags and the fresh mint together.
- Pour on 750ml of boiling water and put the lid on for five minutes.
- Stir in the sugar while it is still very hot.
- Pour from a height into small glasses, which aerates it and builds the froth.
What you'll end up with: A sweet, intensely aromatic pot with a head of froth on each glass. The dried leaf gives the depth and the fresh mint gives the lift.
Iced Mint With Lime
Possibly the best caffeine-free cold drink you can make from a tea bag.
- 2 peppermint tea bags
- 250ml water at 100 degrees
- A full glass of ice
- Half a lime
- Fresh mint leaves
- Brew two bags in 250ml for six minutes, covered, deliberately strong.
- Cool to room temperature, then chill.
- Pour over a glass packed with ice so the dilution lands where you want it.
- Squeeze in the lime and bruise a few fresh mint leaves on top.
Mint And Dark Chocolate Nightcap
After-dinner mints, rebuilt as a drink, with a fraction of the sugar.
- 2 peppermint tea bags
- 150ml water at 100 degrees
- 15g dark chocolate, chopped
- 100ml oat milk, hot
- Brew two bags in only 150ml for six minutes, covered, to make a concentrate.
- Lift the bags out and stir the chopped chocolate into the hot infusion until it melts.
- Pour in the hot oat milk and whisk briefly.
- Serve without sweetening; the chocolate is doing that job.
What you'll end up with: A thin, grown-up mint hot chocolate with no caffeine from the tea side. Note that the chocolate itself brings a little.
Mint Syrup For The Fridge
Four bags and a pan give you a fortnight of mint for cocktails, lemonade and fruit salad.
- 4 peppermint tea bags
- 250ml water at 100 degrees
- 250g caster sugar
- A strip of lime peel
- Brew four bags in 250ml for ten minutes, covered, very strong.
- Lift the bags out and stir the sugar into the hot infusion until fully dissolved.
- Simmer for three minutes with the lime peel, then take it off the heat.
- Cool and keep in a sealed bottle in the fridge for up to two weeks.
What you'll end up with: A clear mint syrup that is far more useful than muddled fresh mint and keeps for a fortnight. Good in lemonade, over fruit, or in a mojito.
Mint Granita
A palate cleanser between courses, made from three tea bags and a freezer.
- 3 peppermint tea bags
- 500ml water at 100 degrees
- 80g caster sugar
- Juice of 1 lime
- Brew three bags in 500ml for eight minutes, covered, then remove them.
- Dissolve the sugar in the hot infusion and stir in the lime juice.
- Freeze in a shallow tray, forking it through every forty-five minutes.
- Fork it a final time after about four hours to give loose icy crystals.
What you'll end up with: Sharp icy crystals that read cold twice over, once from the freezer and once from the menthol. A good thing to put between a rich main and a heavy pudding.
