PG Tips Original Decaffeinated is being pulled: alternatives

PG Tips announced their Original Decaffeinated is leaving the range Q3. The smaller decaf SKU isn't moving enough volume for them. We have stock through end of life. After that the closest alternative is Yorkshire Tea Decaf, which is a more rounded cup at a similar price.

Decaf is the SKU most likely to get pulled when a multinational reviews the range. It usually accounts for 5 to 10% of the brand's volume but the same admin overhead as a top three flavour. When a Lipton or Ekaterra strategy meeting weighs SKU rationalisation against volume contribution, decaf loses. PG Tips Original Decaf has been on shelves for over twenty years. Today it is the casualty of a portfolio simplification, not a quality decision.

Yorkshire Tea Decaf is the closest direct alternative. Same family (a stronger English Breakfast style black), same per cup price band, same brew time. The Yorkshire is fuller bodied because it is CO2-decaffeinated (PG Tips used methylene chloride historically, see our separate piece on decaf methods). It also pairs better with milk, which is what most decaf drinkers want it for in the first place.

Other reasonable swaps depending on the cup you actually want: Twinings English Breakfast Decaf (lighter, more elegant), Clipper Decaf Original (CO2-decaffeinated, organic, slightly more expensive), Tetley Decaf (similar profile to PG but currently available). If your reason for drinking PG Tips Decaf was the strong wake up cup without the caffeine, Yorkshire Decaf is the answer. If it was "cheapest decaf at the supermarket shelf", Tetley wins on price.
