Every cup of Starbucks White Mocha from a Dolce Gusto machine is made from two capsules, so a box of twelve gives you six drinks. Once that is clear, the rest of the product makes sense: where the sugar lives, why the milk needs no fridge and why the sweetness cannot be adjusted.
What the label says is in each cup
Read the published ingredient list and one thing stands out: no cocoa appears on it at all. The white mocha character is built from sugar, which leads the list, then skimmed milk powder at 38%, glucose syrup, coconut oil, lactose and natural flavouring. Coffee makes up 5.3% of the total, and it is a mix of instant and roast and ground coffee rather than one or the other.
That construction explains the taste. Where a darker mocha leans on cocoa for its bitter edge, a white one has nothing of the kind, so the sweetness sits right at the front and a creamy, vanilla-leaning finish follows it. The milk is powdered inside the capsule, which is why the box can live in a cupboard, and also why this is a drink that contains milk and should be treated that way.
Loading the machine: order and water level
The box holds two kinds of capsule, and they are meant to be used as a pair. The usual order is the milk capsule first and the coffee capsule second, unless your box shows otherwise. Laying the milk down underneath lets the pressure-brewed coffee arrive on top and form a crema, which holds much of the coffee aroma close to the surface while you drink.
Watch the water. Each capsule has its own marked level, and running past it is the most common way to spoil a pod drink, because the extra water thins the coffee and the sweet milk at the same time. The sugar is dosed into the milk capsule, so there is no unsweetened cup to be had from this box; for a drier drink from the same machine, the Americano House Blend capsules are the better choice.
Where it sits among the Starbucks capsules
This box belongs to the Dolce Gusto system, and nothing about it crosses over. The capsules will not go into a Nespresso or a Tassimo machine and no adapter changes that, so the Starbucks by Nespresso roasts we also stock are a separate world. Within Dolce Gusto, white mocha is among the sweetest of the Starbucks drinks and the closest to a dessert; the Madagascar Vanilla Macchiato, also twelve capsules for six drinks, is its nearest neighbour on our shelf.
Who is it for? People who want a coffee-shop treat in the afternoon rather than a wake-up cup, and households where not everyone enjoys the taste of plain coffee. Pressure brewing gives more body and a clearer coffee note than a stirred sachet manages, but the white chocolate flavour still leads and the finish is sweet. Treat it as the cup that replaces a pudding, not the one that starts the day.

What to eat with it
- McVitie's Digestives Dark Chocolate Biscuits, 433g: Dark chocolate on a digestive puts back the bitter edge a white mocha leaves out, and the pair reads less sugary than the drink alone.
- Border Lemon Drizzle Melts Organic Biscuits, 150g: A sharp lemon note cuts across the creamy sweetness of the cup rather than adding to it.
- Oreo Vanilla Cookie Chocolate Sandwich Biscuit Twin Pack, 2 x 154g: The chocolate biscuit halves bring a cocoa note the drink itself does not have, for anyone who wants the full afternoon treat.

FAQ
Why does a box of twelve capsules only make six drinks? Each serving uses two capsules, one coffee and one white mocha milk capsule. Plan on six cups per box.
Is there any chocolate in Starbucks White Mocha capsules? The published ingredient list names no cocoa or chocolate. The white chocolate taste comes from sugar, skimmed milk powder, coconut oil and natural flavouring.
Does Starbucks White Mocha contain milk? Yes. Skimmed milk powder and lactose are both on the published ingredient list, so it is not a drink for anyone avoiding milk.
Will these capsules work in a Nespresso machine? No. They are Nescafé Dolce Gusto capsules and fit only Dolce Gusto machines; Nespresso and Tassimo take different capsules.
Can I make it less sweet? Not really, because the sugar is already in the milk capsule. For a black coffee from the same machine, the Starbucks Americano House Blend capsules suit better.
Curator's note: Keep this one for a cold afternoon and let it be a treat. Pull each capsule to its line and not a drop more, and it will be the same good cup every time. Lee, teas.co.uk, Tunbridge Wells.
