LCurator note · Starbucks
Treat it as a pudding and it works. Served next to cake, both go flat, because two sweet things at once cancel each other out and you end up tasting neither properly. The vanilla is not a hint or a background note; it is the entire drink, carried in the milk pod so it arrives sweet before the espresso ever appears, and the espresso stays deliberately quiet underneath. Twelve pods make six servings. Madagascar is what the brand chose to call it and we have left it at that. If you drink your coffee unsweetened, nothing here will convert you. If you have ever ordered a flavoured latte and enjoyed it without apologising for it, this is your box, and a plain almond biscuit is the only thing it wants beside it.

About this product

Starbucks by Nescafé Dolce Gusto, in brief.

Starbucks by Nescafé Dolce Gusto 12 x Madagascar Vanilla Macchiato Coffee (6 Servings) is the flavoured macchiato in the Starbucks range for Dolce Gusto machines. Twelve pods make six drinks: one vanilla milk pod and one espresso pod each. The vanilla sits in the milk, so it arrives sweet and creamy before the coffee appears.

Sweet by design, with the espresso deliberately restrained behind the vanilla. Contains milk, so it is not suitable for vegans. Milk pod first, tall warmed glass, and do not stir it.

It is a latte macchiato in construction. The milk pod goes in first and fills the glass, then the espresso is pushed down through it, which gives the banded look and means the first mouthful is milk and the last is coffee. What separates this box from the plain version is that the vanilla is carried in the milk pod, so it arrives sweetened and flavoured before the coffee ever appears.

The Story Behind Starbucks at Home

The Starbucks at-home range exists because the coffee-shop flavoured latte became a category of its own. People who would never order a plain espresso will happily drink a vanilla macchiato, and Starbucks built a large part of its business on exactly that customer. Putting the same drink into a Dolce Gusto pod is a licensing arrangement: Starbucks provides the brand and the flavour direction, Nescafe provides the pod system and the machine.

On the name, we should be precise. Madagascar Vanilla is what the brand calls this drink. Treat it as the product name, and read the ingredient declaration on the current UK pack if the sourcing of the flavouring matters to you.

Packaging: Follow the current UK pack and local-authority guidance; components can require different disposal routes.

Our Commitment To The Planet

  • Two pods per drink means twelve pods produce six servings and twelve pieces of waste. That is the honest environmental cost of a layered milk drink from a pod machine.
  • Pod recycling routes differ by manufacturer and by council, and they change. Read the current carton and check your local authority rather than assuming kerbside collection.
  • The outer carton is card and separates easily. The pods are a different material and should not go in with it.

Making Vanilla Macchiato Step by Step

  • Count: 12 pods in the box, 6 drinks. One vanilla milk pod plus one espresso pod per serving.
  • Order: Milk pod first, espresso pod second, every time.
  • Vessel: A tall clear glass, rinsed with hot water first so the drink stays hot to the bottom.
  • Water level: Follow the marking printed on each pod rather than filling to a fixed line.
  • Sweetness: Nothing to add. It arrives sweetened and flavoured.
  • Iced version: Both pods run short over a full glass of ice; this is arguably the better way to drink it in summer.
  • Best with: Nothing sweet. A plain biscotti at most, or on its own as the afternoon drink it is designed to be.

Side by side

How does it compare

vs Nescafe Dolce Gusto Latte MacchiatoThe plain version of the same build, and a larger box at eight servings. Pick that one if you want the layered glass without the vanilla and the sweetness.
vs Starbucks Caramel Macchiato by Nescafe Dolce GustoThe sibling flavour. Caramel reads darker and slightly more bitter under the sweetness; vanilla is rounder, creamier and more confectionery.
vs Nescafe Dolce Gusto Cappuccino Skinny and UnsweetenedThe opposite proposition entirely. Unsweetened, skimmed and coffee-forward, for the drinker this box is definitely not aimed at.

Pod order matters more here than on almost any other drink, because the vanilla lives in the milk and the layering is what keeps it from being uniformly sweet all the way down.

Ideal brewing conditions · Hot

The Standard Serve

01
Milk firstThe vanilla milk pod fills the glass. Running the coffee first gives you a flat, uniformly sweet drink with no structure.
02
Coffee secondThe espresso goes down through the milk and sets the bands.
03
Tall glassClear and warmed. This is a drink people photograph, and a mug wastes the build entirely.
04
Do not stirUnstirred, the drink moves from creamy vanilla to coffee as you go down. Stirred, it is the same sweetness all the way through.
Ideal brewing conditions · Hot

Cutting the Sweetness

01
Shorten the milkRun the vanilla milk pod slightly under its marked level. This is the single most effective adjustment.
02
Lengthen the coffee slightlyA touch more water through the espresso pod adds bitterness to balance it, at the cost of a softer band.
03
Add a pinch of saltA few grains in the glass before the milk suppresses perceived sweetness noticeably.
04
Serve it over iceCold reads less sweet than hot, so the iced version is the milder-tasting one.

The Layered Vanilla Macchiato

How to make The Layered Vanilla Macchiato with Starbucks Madagascar Vanilla Macchiato.

2 min 1 glass Easy
You will need
  • 1 vanilla milk pod
  • 1 espresso pod
  • A tall clear glass
Method
  1. Rinse the glass with hot water and tip it out.
  2. Run the vanilla milk pod from Starbucks by Nescafé Dolce Gusto 12 x Madagascar Vanilla Macchiato Coffee (6 Servings) first, to the marked level.
  3. Run the espresso pod second, straight down through the milk.
  4. Leave it unstirred and drink it from the top down.

What you will end up with: Creamy vanilla at the top, coffee at the bottom, foam across the lot. Stirring it makes one uniform sweet drink and throws that away.

Iced Vanilla Macchiato

How to make Iced Vanilla Macchiato with Starbucks Madagascar Vanilla Macchiato.

3 min 1 glass Easy
You will need
  • 1 vanilla milk pod
  • 1 espresso pod
  • A glass packed with ice
Method
  1. Fill a tall glass to the brim with ice.
  2. Run the vanilla milk pod short, a little under its marked level, over the ice.
  3. Run the espresso pod short on top.
  4. Serve with a straw and drink it before the melt thins the coffee out.

What you will end up with: The better-balanced version of this drink. Cold suppresses the perception of sweetness, so the same pods taste noticeably less sugary over ice.

Vanilla Affogato

How to make Vanilla Affogato with Starbucks Madagascar Vanilla Macchiato.

3 min 1 serving Easy
You will need
  • 1 espresso pod, run short
  • Two scoops vanilla ice cream
  • Toasted flaked almonds
Method
  1. Sit two scoops of vanilla ice cream in a cold glass.
  2. Run only the espresso pod from Starbucks by Nescafé Dolce Gusto 12 x Madagascar Vanilla Macchiato Coffee (6 Servings) as short as the machine allows.
  3. Pour it over and scatter toasted almonds on top.
  4. Keep the spare vanilla milk pod for a cortado later rather than wasting it.

What you will end up with: A pudding in two minutes. Using only the espresso pod is deliberate; the vanilla is already in the ice cream and doubling it makes the dish sickly.

Salted Vanilla Macchiato

How to make Salted Vanilla Macchiato with Starbucks Madagascar Vanilla Macchiato.

3 min 1 glass Easy
You will need
  • 1 vanilla milk pod
  • 1 espresso pod
  • A few grains of flaky sea salt
Method
  1. Drop three or four grains of flaky salt into the empty warmed glass.
  2. Run the vanilla milk pod over them so the flow dissolves the salt through.
  3. Run the espresso pod down through the milk as usual.
  4. Taste before adding any more salt; a few grains go a long way.

What you will end up with: The same drink with the sugar dialled back. Salt suppresses the perception of sweetness, so this is the cheapest fix if the standard serve is too much for you.

Vanilla Nightcap (Adult)

How to make Vanilla Nightcap (Adult) with Starbucks Madagascar Vanilla Macchiato.

4 min 1 glass Easy
You will need
  • 1 vanilla milk pod
  • 1 espresso pod
  • 15ml dark rum
Method
  1. Pour 15ml of dark rum into a warmed glass.
  2. Run the vanilla milk pod from Starbucks by Nescafé Dolce Gusto 12 x Madagascar Vanilla Macchiato Coffee (6 Servings) on top of it.
  3. Run the espresso pod down through the milk.
  4. Serve unstirred with a spoon; the rum concentrates at the bottom with the coffee.

What you will end up with: A dessert glass with no equipment and no measuring. Dark rum and vanilla are a natural pair, and the coffee keeps the whole thing from being syrup.

Inside the pack

IngredientProportionWhat it brings
Vanilla milk pod (dairy milk preparation, sweetened, flavoured)one of the two pods per servingThe body, the foam, the sweetness and the vanilla, all in one pod. It fills the glass first, which is why the drink reads vanilla before it reads coffee.
Espresso pod (roast and ground coffee)one of the two pods per servingPushed down through the milk to build the bands. Deliberately restrained, supplying depth and colour rather than bite.

Pack: Starbucks by Nescafé Dolce Gusto 12 x Madagascar Vanilla Macchiato Coffee (6 Servings); twelve sealed pods in a card carton, making six two-pod drinks. Caffeinated. Contains milk. Best-before date is printed on the pack.

Sourcing & blend. Starbucks by Nescafé Dolce Gusto 12 x Madagascar Vanilla Macchiato Coffee (6 Servings) is a licensing arrangement rather than a single-company product: Starbucks supplies the brand and the flavour direction, Nescafe supplies the Dolce Gusto pod system and the machine it runs in. That is worth knowing because it explains the drink's design. It is not a coffee shop's espresso reproduced at home; it is a coffee-shop flavoured latte reproduced at home, and the flavoured milk pod is doing most of the work. Coffee origin and blend composition are not stated at a level we can restate here, and we do not invent one.

What is in Starbucks by Nescafé Dolce Gusto 12 x Madagascar Vanilla Macchiato Coffee (6 Servings), and what is not:

  • In: a sealed sweetened vanilla dairy milk pod and a sealed roast-and-ground espresso pod, one of each per drink.
  • Contains milk and added flavouring: not suitable for vegans, not suitable for anyone avoiding dairy, and not an unflavoured coffee.
  • Not a single-pod drink: twelve pods make six servings, not twelve.
Product questions

Asked about this product

Because a macchiato is a two-pod drink. Each serving uses one vanilla milk pod and one espresso pod, so twelve pods give six drinks.
