The words that matter most on this box are the compatibility line, not the coffee's name. They tell you what the capsule fits, never who made it, and getting that straight saves a wasted order.
Fits, not made by
Nespresso Compatible is a statement about shape. L'Or makes these aluminium capsules and fills them with its own coffee, sized to drop into a machine from the Nespresso Original line. The compatibility claim is L'Or's own, printed on its pack, rather than ours. The coffee and the capsule are L'Or's alone; only the slot in the machine is shared.
L'Or began in France in 1992 and today counts among JDE Peet's three global brands; the same group owns Douwe Egberts and Kenco. Its capsules are sealed, airtight aluminium rather than plastic, and once the box is empty the used capsules can go through Podback, the UK pod recycling scheme that L'Or has joined.
Which machines take them, and which never will
Vertuo is the one to rule out first. Vertuo machines identify their own capsules by a code printed round the edge and refuse anything else, so these will never run in one. Within the Original family, L'Or also lists exceptions: the U, Umilk, Expert, Expert&Milk, Prodigio and Prodigio&Milk models bought after 25 July 2016. The rest of the Original line is what the capsules are made for.
If you are unsure which system is on your worktop, check the model name on the machine itself against the pack before ordering, because the mix-up between the two systems catches people out regularly. A ten-capsule box is a sensible, small first order while you confirm the fit.
Serving a dense, dark shot
Inside is L'Or's Ristretto, rated 11 on a house scale that runs to 13. Intensity is L'Or's shorthand for how deep the roast goes and how strong the cup seems, not a caffeine rating, and it cannot predict the cup on its own because volume matters as much as roast. Kept to about 25ml, it gives roasted cocoa and dark caramel, a syrupy body, a short cocoa bitterness and just a flicker of acidity.
A dense shot takes sugar differently from a long one. A quarter teaspoon stirred into a ristretto melts into something like caramel, while the same amount in a big cup simply tastes sweet. It also makes a good base for a cortado or piccolo, where there is only a little milk. If your machine has only a long button, this is the wrong box; Lungo Profondo is the better choice.

- Border Butterscotch Crunch Organic Biscuits, 135g: Butterscotch meets the dark caramel in the shot, and the crunch suits a quick coffee at the counter.

FAQ
Does Nespresso Compatible mean Nespresso made these? No. L'Or makes the coffee and the aluminium capsule; the words only tell you which machines it is built to fit.
Will they work in a Vertuo? No. Vertuo machines only accept their own coded capsules, so these will not run in one.
Are any Original machines excluded? Yes. L'Or lists the U, Umilk, Expert, Expert&Milk, Prodigio and Prodigio&Milk models bought after 25 July 2016 as exceptions, so check your model.
Is there a bigger box of L'Or Ristretto? Yes. We also stock Ristretto Intensity 11 in a box of forty, the one to move on to once the fit is confirmed and the short shot has become a habit.
Should I sweeten a ristretto? That is up to you, but a small amount in a short shot rounds it off like caramel, where the same spoon in a long cup just tastes sweet.
Curator's note: Read the machine before you read the coffee. Once the fit is right, keep the shot short, and if you take sugar, a pinch is plenty. Lee, teas.co.uk, Tunbridge Wells.
