L'Or Nespresso Compatible Espresso Ristretto Aluminium Coffee Intensity 11, 10 Capsules
Nespresso Compatible on the front of a box tells you what it fits, never who made it, and that is worth getting straight before you buy anything in this corner of the aisle. This is L'Or's own coffee in L'Or's own aluminium, built to drop into a machine somebody else sells. It fits the Original line. It will not run in a Vertuo; that machine takes only its own discs and refuses everything else. As for the coffee, the useful thing to know is that what the strong end of a range buys you here is weight rather than volume, and weight is what takes sugar. A quarter teaspoon in something this dense turns into caramel and disappears; the same quarter teaspoon in a long cup just tastes of sugar. If the only button on your machine is the long one, buy a different box.
L'Or Nespresso Compatible Espresso Ristretto Aluminium Coffee Intensity 11, in brief.
L'Or Nespresso Compatible Espresso Ristretto Aluminium Coffee Intensity 11, 10 Capsules is the strong end of the L'Or range in a ten-capsule box, sealed in aluminium for a Nespresso Original machine. Ten is a trial quantity rather than a restock. Picked into the Teas.co.uk selection as the short, dark box to find out with.
Machine check: these fit Nespresso Original machines. They are not Vertuo capsules and will not work in a Vertuo, which takes only its own barcoded capsule.
A ristretto is the same coffee as an espresso stopped early, at about 25ml. Intensity 11 is L'Or's own scale for roast depth and perceived strength, not a caffeine rating. The shelf price for this box moves about, so the price in your basket is the price.
Two words on the front of it are doing real work. Ristrettois the first, and it does not mean a different coffee from an espresso. Intensity 11is the second, and it means less than people assume.

The Story Behind L'Or
The range is built to be chosen off a supermarket shelf in ten seconds, with named profiles running from a long, gentle lungo up to this ristretto, so a customer can pick by strength without learning a new vocabulary first.
About compatibility: these are sold as compatible with Nespresso Original machines, and the claim is L'Or's own, printed on the current UK pack, rather than ours. They are not Vertuo capsules and will not work in a Vertuo machine, which reads a barcode on the rim of its own capsule and takes nothing else. That distinction catches people out regularly, so it is worth checking which system you own before ordering.
The price in your basket at checkout is the price you pay, and it is the only figure we will stand behind.
Packaging: Follow the current UK pack and your local-authority guidance. Aluminium capsules are widely recyclable, but almost never through the ordinary kerbside bin with the coffee grounds still inside them, and the carton and the capsules usually take different routes.
What Intensity 11 Does And Does Not Mean
The number on the box is L'Or's own scale, not an industry measure, and it is not a caffeine rating. It is a shorthand for roast depth and perceived strength that lets a shopper rank one box against another in the same range. Eleven puts this capsule at the upper end of what L'Or sells, and in practice that reads as a darker roast, more body and more cocoa bitterness than the middle of the range.
What it cannot tell you is how the cup will land, because that depends on volume as much as on roast. The same coffee at 25ml and at 110ml is two different drinks, and an 11 spread across a long cup would read far gentler than this does in a demitasse. The number and the format have to be read together, which is exactly why L'Or prints both.
Getting A Consistent Cup
- Descale on schedule: scale lowers the water temperature at the group more than it restricts the flow, so a scaled machine under-extracts quietly rather than failing loudly.
- Keep the capsules sealed: leave them in the carton until the moment of use; the individual seal is the entire preservation system.
- Empty the capsule bin: a full bin is the most common reason a capsule fails to seat and pierce cleanly.
- Filtered water: in a hard-water area a filter jug does more for the cup than changing capsules will.
- Do not re-run a used capsule: the second pass gives you the bitter tail of the first extraction and nothing else.
- Caffeine note: the intensity number refers to roast depth and perceived strength, not caffeine. This is a regular caffeinated coffee.
- Best with: dark chocolate, an almond biscuit, or on its own after a meal.
Ingredients And Suitability
What is in it:roasted ground coffee in a sealed aluminium capsule, and nothing else. No added flavourings, no sweeteners, no preservatives.
Ingredients and dietary suitability: Check the current UK pack before purchase; formulations, certification marks and allergen advice can change.
Net weight: the figure is printed on the current pack.
Caffeine:contains caffeine, and a short shot concentrates it into a very small cup rather than removing it. Not one for late in the evening if you are sensitive, and worth moderating during pregnancy in line with current NHS guidance.
Child Safety:Keep hot drinks, capsules and the machine out of reach of children.

The taste profile
How does it compare
The machine does the extraction here, so the only variables left to you are the button, the cup and the state of the machine.
The Straight Ristretto
The Milk Build
Made with this tea
The Straight Ristretto
How to make The Straight Ristretto with L'Or Espresso Ristretto Intensity 11.
- 1 L'Or Espresso Ristretto Intensity 11 capsule
- Fresh water in the machine tank
- A Nespresso Original machine
- A warmed demitasse
- Rinse a blank shot of hot water into the cup to warm it, and tip it out.
- Refill the tank with fresh water rather than topping it up.
- Pull the capsule on the ristretto setting, about 25ml, or stop the espresso button by hand at half volume.
- Drink it promptly, while the crema is still holding.
What you'll end up with: The cup the capsule was dosed for: syrupy, cocoa-deep and short. Letting an 11 run long makes it harsher, not stronger.
Cortado From One Capsule
How to make a Cortado with L'Or Espresso Ristretto Intensity 11.
- 1 L'Or Espresso Ristretto Intensity 11 capsule
- 60ml whole or oat milk
- A thermometer, or a steady hand
- A 90ml glass
- Pull the capsule short, straight into the glass.
- Steam 60ml of milk to about 60°C, keeping the texture fine rather than foamy.
- Pour the milk through the crema in one steady motion.
- Serve straight away, without a spoon.
What you'll end up with: The drink this capsule is best at. Sixty millilitres of milk is the most a single short shot will carry without disappearing.
The Two Capsule Flat White
How to make a Flat White with L'Or Espresso Ristretto Intensity 11.
- 2 L'Or Espresso Ristretto Intensity 11 capsules
- 130ml whole or oat milk
- A 200ml cup
- Cocoa to dust, optional
- Pull two capsules short into the same cup.
- Steam 130ml of milk to about 60°C.
- Pour steadily through the centre of the crema.
- Dust with cocoa if you want it.
What you'll end up with: A flat white that still tastes of coffee at the bottom. Two short shots beat one long one, because adding water does not add strength.
Iced Ristretto Over Milk
How to make an Iced Ristretto with L'Or Espresso Ristretto Intensity 11.
- 1 L'Or Espresso Ristretto Intensity 11 capsule
- A tall glass of ice
- 150ml cold milk
- A long spoon
- Fill a tall glass with ice and pour in 150ml of cold milk.
- Pull the capsule short, at about 25ml.
- Pour the hot shot straight over the ice and milk.
- Stir once and drink before the ice thins it.
What you'll end up with: A clean iced coffee with the coffee still audible. A short shot is the only kind that survives a glass of melting ice.
Affogato
How to make an Affogato with L'Or Espresso Ristretto Intensity 11.
- 1 L'Or Espresso Ristretto Intensity 11 capsule
- 2 scoops of vanilla ice cream
- A small cold bowl
- Grated dark chocolate, optional
- Scoop the ice cream into a cold bowl and return it to the freezer while the machine warms.
- Pull the capsule short, straight over the ice cream.
- Grate a little dark chocolate over the top if you want it.
- Eat immediately, before the whole thing turns to soup.
What you'll end up with: The dessert a ristretto was made for. A long shot floods the bowl; a short one melts a channel through the middle and stays coffee.
Brewing the perfect cup
Inside the pack
| Component | Proportion | What it brings |
|---|---|---|
| Roasted ground coffee | the entire contents | The whole product. Nothing is added: no flavouring, no sweetener, no preservative. The roast is taken deep enough to put cocoa and dark caramel at the front rather than fruit. |
| Grind and dose | set for a ristretto | The reason this is not simply an espresso capsule used differently. Both are chosen for an extraction of roughly 25ml, which is why the cup is syrupy at that volume instead of thin. |
| Aluminium capsule | 10 per carton | An absolute barrier to oxygen and light, and rigid enough to hold its shape under nine bars so the water passes through the bed evenly rather than round the edge. |
| Pack contents | 10 capsules | Ten short shots. A trial quantity rather than a restock; the 40-capsule box of the same profile costs less per cup. |

Characterising components shown; the coffee is the entire contents and the capsule is the packaging.
Sourcing & blend. L'Or Nespresso Compatible Espresso Ristretto Aluminium Coffee Intensity 11, 10 Capsules is put together by L'Or, the capsule and pod arm of the Jacobs Douwe Egberts group. The range is named by profile rather than by origin, running from a long gentle lungo up to this ristretto, so a customer can pick by strength without learning a new vocabulary. Compatibility with Nespresso Original machines is L'Or's claim, printed on the current UK pack, rather than ours.
What's in this box, and what isn't:
- In: roasted ground coffee in a sealed aluminium capsule, and nothing else.
- No artificial colours, flavourings, sweeteners or preservatives: this is plain coffee, and any sweetness in the cup is the roast rather than an addition.
- Not a Vertuo capsule: Nespresso Original fit only. A Vertuo machine reads a barcode on the rim and will not take these.
- Not decaffeinated: the intensity number refers to roast depth and perceived strength, not caffeine.
