LCurator note · L'Or
Everything about the result here is decided by which button you press. These capsules are built for the long run of water, and put under the short button they give a flat, half-finished cup that tells you nothing about the coffee inside them. Given the volume they were made for, the cup runs deep and cocoa-led with a toasted-cereal edge, very little acidity, and a middle that holds its weight right across a long mug instead of thinning out halfway down. The finish is soft and bitter and clears rather than clings. Aluminium is part of why it arrives that way, because it keeps the ground coffee sealed away from air where a plastic capsule does not, and on a roast this dark aroma goes before anything else does. It is a morning mug and a solid base for milk. It will not satisfy anybody hunting fruit or brightness, and it was never built to.

About this product

L'Or Nespresso Compatible Espresso Lungo Profondo Aluminium Coffee Intensity 8, in brief.

L'Or Nespresso Compatible Espresso Lungo Profondo Aluminium Coffee Intensity 8, 10 Capsules is a ten-capsule box of aluminium lungo capsules for a Nespresso Original machine. Ten is a trial quantity rather than a restock. Picked into the Teas.co.uk selection as the box to buy before committing to a forty.

Machine check: these fit Nespresso Original machines. They are not Vertuo capsules and will not work in a Vertuo, which uses a different barcoded capsule entirely.

A lungo is not a weak espresso. It is built to be extracted with about twice the water, so use the lungo button at roughly 110ml. Deep, low in acidity, and full enough to hold its weight to the bottom of a long cup.

The word doing the work in the name is lungo. A lungo is not a weaker espresso, which is the assumption most people arrive with. It is a capsule built to be extracted with roughly twice the water, using a coffee dose and a grind chosen for that longer run. Put a lungo capsule under the espresso button and you get a short, rather flat cup; put an espresso capsule under the lungo button and you get a thin, over-extracted one. Matching the capsule to the button is most of what separates a good result from a disappointing one here.

The Story Behind L'Or

L'Or is the capsule and pod arm of the Jacobs Douwe Egberts group, making capsules in aluminium rather than plastic for the machine most British households already own. That is a practical proposition rather than a romantic one, and the range is built accordingly, with named profiles running from a light lungo up to a heavy ristretto so that a customer can pick by strength without learning a new vocabulary.

About compatibility: these are sold as compatible with Nespresso Original machines. They are not Vertuo capsules and will not work in a Vertuo machine, which uses a different, barcoded capsule entirely. That distinction catches people out regularly, and it is worth checking which system you own before ordering. The compatibility claim itself belongs to L'Or and is printed on the current UK pack.

Packaging: Follow the current UK pack and local-authority guidance. Aluminium capsules are widely recyclable but almost never through the ordinary kerbside bin with the coffee grounds still in them, and the carton and the capsules usually take different routes.

Why Aluminium Rather Than Plastic

Capsule material is not a detail; it changes the coffee. Aluminium is an absolute barrier to oxygen and light, which is the reason a sealed aluminium capsule can sit in a cupboard for months and still taste close to the day it was filled. Ground coffee starts losing aroma within minutes of grinding, and the only reason capsules work at all as a format is that the grinding and the sealing happen in the same moment, with the oxygen pulled out before the lid goes on. Plastic capsules are permeable by comparison, slowly enough not to matter over a few weeks and quickly enough to matter over a year.

The second consequence is what happens under pressure. Aluminium holds its shape while the machine pushes hot water through at nine bars, so the water passes through the coffee bed evenly rather than finding a path around the edge. That is why a well made aluminium capsule produces a consistent crema cup after cup with none of the technique a real espresso machine demands. You are buying consistency more than you are buying ceremony.

Getting A Consistent Cup

  • Descale on schedule: scale changes the water temperature at the group more than it changes the flow, and a scaled machine under-extracts quietly rather than failing loudly.
  • Keep the capsules sealed: leave them in the carton until the moment of use; the seal is the whole preservation system.
  • Empty the capsule bin: a full bin is the most common cause of a capsule not piercing cleanly and the shot running short.
  • Filtered water: in a hard water area a filter jug does more for the cup than changing capsules will.
  • Do not re-run a used capsule: the second pass gives you water with the bitter tail of the first extraction in it and nothing else.
  • Caffeine note: this is a regular caffeinated coffee, not a decaf. Check the current pack if you need a figure per cup.
  • Best with: breakfast pastries, dark chocolate, or on its own after a meal.

Ingredients And Suitability

What is in it:roasted ground coffee in a sealed aluminium capsule, and nothing else. No added flavourings, no sweeteners, no preservatives.

Ingredients and dietary suitability: Check the current UK pack before purchase; formulations, certification marks and allergen advice can change.

Caffeine:contains caffeine. Not one for late in the evening if you are sensitive, and worth moderating during pregnancy in line with current NHS guidance.

Child Safety:Keep hot drinks, capsules and the machine out of reach of children.

Tasting notes

The taste profile

Roast Depth●●●●○ 4/5
Profondo means deep, and the roast is taken far enough to put roasted cocoa and toasted grain at the front rather than fruit.
Body●●●●○ 4/5
Full for a long cup. Lungos frequently thin out across 110ml; this one holds its weight to the bottom.
Bitterness●●●○○ 3/5
Present and cocoa-like. It arrives late and clears rather than clinging, which is what a longer extraction should give you.
Acidity●●○○○ 2/5
Low. Very little brightness or fruit; the capsule is built for depth and for milk.

Side by side

How does it compare

vs The 40-capsule box of the same profileIdentical coffee, four times the quantity, and a lower price per cup. The forty is the sensible restock once you know you like it. This ten is the box to buy first, or to keep as a second style alongside your usual so there is a long cup available without opening another large box.
vs A ristretto capsule from the same rangeA ristretto is the opposite build, a short intense shot in about 25ml. If you drink your coffee small and strong, buy that instead. This is for the mug rather than the demitasse, and for anyone who finds a straight espresso too concentrated to sit with.

To get the best out of L'Or Espresso Lungo Profondo, the machine does the extraction, so the variables left to you are the button, the mug and the state of the machine.

Ideal brewing conditions · Hot

The Straight Lungo

01
ButtonUse the lungo setting, around 110ml. This capsule is built for that volume; the espresso button will give you a short cup that tastes flat rather than strong.
02
Warm the cupRun a blank shot of hot water into the mug and tip it out first. A cold mug takes a surprising amount of heat out of 110ml of coffee.
03
Fresh waterEmpty and refill the tank rather than topping it up. Water that has stood in a plastic tank for a week is the commonest reason a capsule tastes duller than it did last time.
04
Drink it promptlyThe crema falls away within a few minutes and the cup loses its aromatic top notes with it.
Ideal brewing conditions · Hot

The Milk Build

01
Go shortFor a flat white or a cortado, pull it on the espresso setting instead, so the coffee is concentrated enough to read through the milk.
02
Two capsulesFor a full mug of milky coffee, two capsules pulled short beats one pulled long. Dilution and strength are different problems and only one of them is solved by adding water.
03
TemperatureSteam the milk to about 60°C. Hotter than that and the milk loses its sweetness and starts to taste cooked.
04
IcedPull it on the espresso setting straight over ice and top with cold milk. A lungo poured over ice is already diluted twice.

Made with this tea

The Straight Lungo

How to make The Straight Lungo with L'Or Espresso Lungo Profondo.

2 min 1 cup Easy
You'll need
  • 1 L'Or Lungo Profondo capsule
  • Fresh water in the machine tank
  • A Nespresso Original machine
  • A warmed mug
Method
  1. Rinse a blank shot of hot water into the mug to warm it, and tip it out.
  2. Refill the tank with fresh water rather than topping it up.
  3. Pull the capsule on the lungo setting, about 110ml.
  4. Drink it promptly, while the crema is still holding.

What you'll end up with: The cup the capsule was dosed for. Resist the espresso button; it gives you a short cup that tastes flat rather than strong.

Flat White From A Lungo Capsule

How to make Flat White From A Lungo Capsule with L'Or Espresso Lungo Profondo.

5 min 1 cup Medium
You'll need
  • 1 L'Or Lungo Profondo capsule
  • 120ml whole or oat milk
  • A thermometer, or a steady hand
  • A 160ml cup
Method
  1. Pull the capsule on the espresso setting rather than the lungo one, so the coffee is concentrated enough to read through milk.
  2. Steam 120ml of milk to about 60°C, no hotter, keeping the texture fine rather than foamy.
  3. Pour the milk through the crema in one steady motion.
  4. Serve straight away.

What you'll end up with: The deep roast and low acidity are exactly what survive milk. Past 60°C the milk loses its sweetness and starts to taste cooked.

The Two Capsule Mug

How to make The Two Capsule Mug with L'Or Espresso Lungo Profondo.

5 min 1 large mug Easy
You'll need
  • 2 L'Or Lungo Profondo capsules
  • 180ml warm milk
  • A 350ml mug
  • Cocoa to dust, optional
Method
  1. Pull two capsules on the espresso setting into the same mug.
  2. Warm 180ml of milk to steaming but not boiling.
  3. Pour the milk over and stir once.
  4. Dust with cocoa if you want it.

What you'll end up with: A proper mug-sized milky coffee. Two short shots beat one long one: adding water does not add strength.

Iced Lungo Over Milk

How to make Iced Lungo Over Milk with L'Or Espresso Lungo Profondo.

3 min 1 glass Easy
You'll need
  • 1 L'Or Lungo Profondo capsule
  • A tall glass of ice
  • 150ml cold milk
  • A long spoon
Method
  1. Fill a tall glass with ice and pour in 150ml of cold milk.
  2. Pull the capsule on the espresso setting, not the lungo one.
  3. Pour the hot shot straight over the ice and milk.
  4. Stir once and drink before the ice thins it.

What you'll end up with: A clean iced coffee. A lungo poured over ice has been diluted twice over and tastes of it.

The Long Black

How to make The Long Black with L'Or Espresso Lungo Profondo.

3 min 1 mug Easy
You'll need
  • 1 L'Or Lungo Profondo capsule
  • 100ml hot water from the kettle
  • A warmed mug
  • A twist of lemon peel, optional
Method
  1. Pour 100ml of hot water into the warmed mug first.
  2. Pull the capsule on the espresso setting directly on top of the water.
  3. Leave the crema undisturbed rather than stirring it in.
  4. Add a twist of lemon peel if you want the aroma lifted.

What you'll end up with: Coffee onto water, not water onto coffee. The order keeps the crema intact and the cup tastes rounder for it.

Sourcing & blend. L'Or Nespresso Compatible Espresso Lungo Profondo Aluminium Coffee Intensity 8, 10 Capsules is put together by L'Or, the capsule and pod arm of the Jacobs Douwe Egberts group. The range runs from a light lungo up to a heavy ristretto under named profiles, so a customer can pick by strength without learning a new vocabulary. Compatibility with Nespresso Original machines is L'Or's claim, printed on the current UK pack, rather than ours.

What's in L'Or Nespresso Compatible Espresso Lungo Profondo Aluminium Coffee Intensity 8, 10 Capsules, and what isn't:

  • In: roasted ground coffee in a sealed aluminium capsule, and nothing else.
  • No artificial colours, flavourings, sweeteners or preservatives: this is plain coffee, and any sweetness in the cup is the roast rather than an addition.
  • Not a Vertuo capsule: Nespresso Original fit only. A Vertuo machine reads a barcode on the rim and will not take these.
  • Not decaffeinated: the intensity number refers to roast depth and perceived strength, not caffeine.
Formulations change; the current UK pack is always the final word on ingredients and allergens.
