LCurator note · L'Or
Lukewarm is the commonest complaint about a long capsule, and the cup is usually to blame rather than the coffee. A long pull lands in a vessel three times the size of an espresso cup, and a cold mug drinks the heat straight out of it before you reach it. Run the machine once with nothing in it, tip that water away, and the same capsule arrives noticeably hotter and tastes fuller for it. Underneath the temperature, this is a quiet, even cup: roasted cocoa and toasted grain, very little acidity, a soft bitter finish that clears instead of clinging. It is the capsule for people who want a coffee to sit with rather than one to knock back.

About this product

L'Or Espresso Lungo Profondo Intensity 8 Coffee, in brief.

L'Or Espresso Lungo Profondo Intensity 8 is the long-cup capsule from the L'Or Espresso range, an aluminium capsule dosed and ground for a 110ml extraction rather than a 25ml one, picked into the Teas.co.uk selection as the capsule to buy if the lungo button is the one you actually press.

Machine fit: made for machines that take Nespresso original-line capsules. Not Vertuo, not Dolce Gusto, not Tassimo. Check the current UK pack against your machine before buying.

A forty capsule box at 208g, which is the sensible size for a household that drinks long coffee daily rather than restocking sleeves of ten every fortnight.

L'Or Espresso Lungo Profondo Intensity 8 is built for the cup most capsule ranges get wrong: the long one. Most capsule blends are roasted and ground for a 25ml espresso, then simply asked to cope when you press the bigger button, and the result thins out badly past the halfway mark. Lungo Profondo is the opposite. It is dosed and ground for a 110ml extraction from the start, so the water has enough coffee to work through and the cup holds its body all the way down.

This is the forty capsule box, 208g of coffee across 40 servings, which works out at roughly 5.2g in each capsule. That is a real espresso dose rather than the token amount some compatible capsules carry, and it is the reason the lungo does not collapse into brown water. L'Or sits in the Jacobs Douwe Egberts stable, a house that has been roasting for the European market for a very long time, and the Espresso range is its capsule line in aluminium rather than plastic.

The Story Behind L'Or

L'Or is the capsule and instant brand from Jacobs Douwe Egberts, the Dutch-rooted group behind several of the biggest coffee names on a British shelf. The Espresso capsule range was the brand's answer to a single question: whether an aluminium capsule made by someone other than the machine manufacturer could match the original on extraction. Lungo Profondo is the long-cup entry in that range, and the profile is unashamedly European — depth over brightness, crema over clarity, a cup that takes milk without disappearing.

Machine fit: these are aluminium capsules made for machines that accept Nespresso original-line capsules. They do not fit Vertuo machines, and they are not Dolce Gusto or Tassimo pods. Check the pack against your own machine before you commit to a box of forty.

Packaging: Follow the current UK pack and local-authority guidance; aluminium capsules, the card outer and any film can each require a different disposal route.

What Intensity 8 Actually Means

Intensity numbers are a brand's own scale, not an industry standard, so an 8 from L'Or is not directly comparable to an 8 from another house. Within the L'Or range it tells you two useful things: the roast is on the darker half of the line, and the blend leans towards the fuller, lower-acid end. It is not a measure of caffeine. A lungo pulls more water through the same dose, so it gives you a bigger cup, not a proportionally stronger one.

Getting a Consistent Cup

  • Descale on schedule: scale changes extraction temperature, and temperature changes the cup more than any other single variable.
  • Store the box closed: the capsules are sealed individually, but the card outer keeps them out of direct light and away from kitchen odours.
  • Run a blank shot: if the machine has been sitting all night, pull 50ml of plain water through it before the first capsule of the day.
  • Milk: steamed whole milk suits the roast; a 110ml lungo with 60ml of milk is a workable flat white substitute.
  • Iced: extract two capsules as espressos over a tall glass of ice, then top with cold water. Extracting long straight onto ice dilutes it twice over.
  • Caffeine note: this is a regular caffeinated blend, not a decaf. Check the current pack if you need a figure per capsule.
  • Best with: a morning pastry, dark chocolate, or on its own after a meal where an espresso would be too short.

How does it compare

vs Standard 10-capsule sleevesThe forty capsule box is the same coffee bought properly. If lungo is your daily cup, buying in tens means paying a premium for cardboard and restocking every fortnight.
vs An espresso-profile capsule pressed longThis is the comparison that matters. A capsule ground for 25ml gives you a hollow 110ml cup with a watery tail. Lungo Profondo is ground coarser and dosed for the longer contact time, so the second half of the cup still tastes of coffee.

To get the best out of L'Or Espresso Lungo Profondo, the machine is doing most of the work, but three things are still in your hands: the water, the volume and the cup.

Ideal brewing conditions · Hot

The Straight Lungo

01
WaterUse fresh, filtered water and change the tank rather than topping it up. Stale tank water is the single most common reason a capsule cup tastes dull.
02
VolumePress the lungo button for roughly 110ml. If your machine is programmable, 110ml is the target; push past 130ml and you will start to thin it.
03
CupWarm the cup first with a blank shot of hot water. A cold ceramic cup can drop a lungo several degrees before the first sip.
04
FinishDrink it black to read the blend properly. It takes a splash of milk without vanishing, which is more than most lungo capsules manage.
Ideal brewing conditions · Hot

The Long Black

01
OrderPut 60ml of hot water in the cup first, then extract the capsule on the espresso setting into it. Doing it this way round keeps the crema intact.
02
WhyYou get the concentration of an espresso with the volume of a lungo, and a cleaner finish than a straight 110ml pull.
03
ResultA deep, low-acid long black that holds its head for several minutes.

The Straight Lungo

How to make The Straight Lungo with L'Or Espresso Lungo Profondo.

2 min 1 cup Easy
You'll need
  • 1 capsule L'Or Espresso Lungo Profondo
  • Fresh filtered water in the tank
  • A 150ml cup or larger
Method
  1. Warm the cup with a blank shot of hot water and tip it away.
  2. Extract one capsule of L'Or Espresso Lungo Profondo Intensity 8 Coffee, 40 Pods 208g on the lungo setting, targeting around 110ml.
  3. Drink it black for the first cup so you can read the blend properly.
  4. If it tastes thin, check the programmed volume has not crept past 130ml.

What you'll end up with: A deep, low-acid long cup that still tastes of coffee on the last mouthful, which is the whole reason to buy a lungo capsule rather than press the long button on an espresso one.

The Long Black

How to make The Long Black with L'Or Espresso Lungo Profondo.

3 min 1 cup Easy
You'll need
  • 1 capsule L'Or Espresso Lungo Profondo
  • 60ml hot water
  • A 150ml cup
Method
  1. Pour 60ml of hot water into the cup first.
  2. Extract one capsule of L'Or Espresso Lungo Profondo Intensity 8 Coffee, 40 Pods 208g on the espresso setting straight on top of it.
  3. Doing it in this order keeps the crema on the surface instead of pushing water through it.

What you'll end up with: Espresso concentration at lungo volume, with a head that holds for several minutes. Cleaner on the finish than a straight 110ml pull.

Capsule Flat White

How to make Capsule Flat White with L'Or Espresso Lungo Profondo.

5 min 1 cup Easy
You'll need
  • 1 capsule L'Or Espresso Lungo Profondo
  • 120ml whole or oat milk
  • A 200ml cup
Method
  1. Extract one capsule of L'Or Espresso Lungo Profondo Intensity 8 Coffee, 40 Pods 208g at around 60ml, shorter than a full lungo.
  2. Steam or froth 120ml of milk to a fine, glossy texture rather than a stiff foam.
  3. Pour the milk through the crema from a low height.
  4. The Intensity 8 roast is deep enough to stay readable under this much milk.

What you'll end up with: A milk coffee where the coffee still leads. Oat milk suits the cocoa-leaning roast particularly well.

Double Shot Over Ice

How to make Double Shot Over Ice with L'Or Espresso Lungo Profondo.

4 min 1 tall glass Easy
You'll need
  • 2 capsules L'Or Espresso Lungo Profondo
  • A tall glass packed with ice
  • 100ml cold water or milk
Method
  1. Fill a tall glass to the top with ice. Half-filling it is the usual mistake.
  2. Extract 2 capsules of L'Or Espresso Lungo Profondo Intensity 8 Coffee, 40 Pods 208g on the espresso setting directly over the ice.
  3. Top with 100ml of cold water or cold milk and stir once.
  4. Extract short, never long: a full 110ml lungo onto ice dilutes the cup twice.

What you'll end up with: A cold coffee with the roast still intact. The low acidity of this blend is an advantage served cold, where bright coffees can read sharp.

Affogato

How to make Affogato with L'Or Espresso Lungo Profondo.

3 min 1 serving Easy
You'll need
  • 1 capsule L'Or Espresso Lungo Profondo
  • 2 scoops vanilla ice cream
  • A chilled glass or small bowl
Method
  1. Put 2 scoops of vanilla ice cream in a chilled glass.
  2. Extract 1 capsule of L'Or Espresso Lungo Profondo Intensity 8 Coffee, 40 Pods 208g on the espresso setting straight over the top.
  3. Serve immediately, with a spoon rather than a straw.

What you'll end up with: The simplest Italian pudding there is. The cocoa-bitter finish of this blend is exactly what stops vanilla ice cream tasting flat.

Espresso Martini (Adult)

How to make Espresso Martini (Adult) with L'Or Espresso Lungo Profondo.

6 min 1 glass Medium
You'll need
  • 1 capsule L'Or Espresso Lungo Profondo
  • 50ml vodka
  • 20ml coffee liqueur
  • 1 teaspoon sugar syrup
  • Ice
Method
  1. Extract 1 capsule of L'Or Espresso Lungo Profondo Intensity 8 Coffee, 40 Pods 208g on the espresso setting and let it cool for two minutes.
  2. Shake hard with 50ml of vodka, 20ml of coffee liqueur, 1 teaspoon of sugar syrup and plenty of ice for a full fifteen seconds.
  3. Strain into a chilled coupe and let the foam settle before serving.
  4. Shaking long enough is what builds the foam; a short shake gives you a flat drink.

What you'll end up with: A dense, cocoa-weighted espresso martini. The low acidity of Intensity 8 keeps the drink round rather than sharp once the sugar goes in.

Sourcing & blend. L'Or Espresso Lungo Profondo Intensity 8 Coffee, 40 Pods 208g is put together by L'Or, the capsule and instant brand within Jacobs Douwe Egberts, a group with a long history of roasting for the European market. The blend is bought to a fixed roast and grind specification for the long-cup format, sealed capsule by capsule so the coffee inside is protected from air and light until the machine pierces it. That individual sealing, rather than any preservative, is what keeps a forty capsule box tasting the same on the last capsule as on the first.

What's in L'Or Espresso Lungo Profondo Intensity 8 Coffee, 40 Pods 208g, and what isn't:

  • In: roasted and ground coffee, dosed at roughly 5.2g per capsule and ground for a 110ml extraction. Nothing else.
  • No artificial flavourings, colours, preservatives or added sugar: any sweetness in the cup is roast sweetness from the bean.
  • Not decaffeinated: this is a regular caffeinated coffee. Check the current pack if you need a figure per capsule.
  • Capsule material: aluminium body with a card outer. Disposal routes differ by council, so follow the current UK pack and your local-authority guidance.
Formulations change; the current UK pack is always the final word on ingredients and allergens.
