“Chai” means tea, yet UK shelves use the word for black-tea blends, herbal spice bags, rooibos and sweetened powders. The base ingredient decides caffeine and how the drink handles milk.
Black tea, herbal spice or rooibos
Tea India sits closest to the everyday black-tea masala route and naturally contains caffeine. Dragonfly replaces black tea with rooibos. Yogi, Pukka and Teapigs each need their current ingredient list read carefully rather than being assigned a caffeine status from the word chai alone.
Spice architecture
Cardamom, cinnamon, ginger, clove, pepper, fennel and vanilla create very different cups depending on balance. Ginger and pepper feel brisker; cinnamon and liquorice can read sweeter; vanilla rounds edges. Look for the spice you want, not the longest ingredient list.
Tea bag versus simmered masala chai
A bag is quick and consistent, but it will not fully reproduce tea and whole spices simmered with milk. Brew stronger or use less water if adding milk, while staying within the pack guidance. For a richer result, follow a proper masala chai recipe rather than steeping indefinitely until bitterness substitutes for depth.
Chai is not automatically sweetened
These tea bags are distinct from instant chai-latte powders, which may contain sugar or milk ingredients. A bagged chai can be served unsweetened, sweetened to taste or with milk. Check the exact pack for allergens and additions.

How we keep this guide useful
Teas.co.uk is the retailer and the editor of this guide. No brand paid for inclusion or position. We start with products that are published and in stock in our own shop, then separate comparable products by tea family, ingredients, format, caffeine position and intended use. “Best” means the best fit for a stated need within this dated shortlist—not a universal tasting result.
Product names such as Sleep, Digest, Defence, Detox or Immune are treated as range labels, not medical evidence. Always read the current ingredient, allergen and preparation information on the pack. If you are pregnant, take medicines or manage a health condition, check ingredients such as liquorice root with an appropriate clinician. Last editorial and catalogue review: 8 August 2026.
