Twinings Green Tea 80, 200g
Everything people dislike about green tea comes out of the kettle, not the bag. Pour at a rolling boil and you get ninety seconds of bitter grass. Wait two or three minutes after the kettle clicks, pour at around eighty, and the same bag gives you something clean and faintly sweet. Two minutes, three at the outside, no milk. If you keep getting it wrong, put four bags in a litre of cold water overnight in the fridge instead; that version cannot be ruined. Buy it because you want plain green tea in a mug, not for anything you have read about what it does to you.
Twinings Green Tea 80, in brief.
Twinings Green Tea is the plain unflavoured green tea from the London tea house, 80 bags in a 200g box at 2.5g of leaf each, picked into the Teas.co.uk selection as the reliable everyday green rather than a flavoured one.
The one thing that decides whether you enjoy it is water temperature: pour at around 80 degrees rather than at a rolling boil and the bitterness people complain about simply does not appear.
Twinings Green Tea is the plain, unflavoured green tea that most British households actually keep, as opposed to the jasmine, mint and lemon versions that crowd the same shelf. Nothing is added to it: no flower petals, no fruit pieces, no flavouring.
That plainness is the reason to buy it and also the reason people give up on green tea. There is nothing in the bag to hide behind, so the one thing that matters is water temperature. Poured at a full boil this tea turns bitter and grassy within ninety seconds. Poured at around 80 degrees it is clean, faintly sweet and vegetal, and the whole complaint disappears.

The Story Behind the Twinings
Twinings has traded as a family tea house from the Strand in London since 1706, and its plain green tea is one of the lines that quietly does the most work: it is the bag people reach for when they want green tea rather than a green-tea-flavoured drink. The house buys against a fixed quality and purity specification rather than from a single named garden, then blends and taste tests through each batch so the cup stays consistent.
Green tea is unoxidised, which is the whole difference between this bag and a breakfast tea. After picking, the leaf is heated quickly to stop the enzymes that would otherwise turn it dark, then rolled and dried. Everything green tea is prized for and everything it is fussy about follows from that single step: the fresh vegetal character survives, but so do compounds that turn harsh under boiling water.
The exact origin statement, the processing style and any certification marks are printed on the current UK pack and change from time to time, so we do not restate them here. What is worth knowing is that this is a blend rather than a single-garden tea, and that it is built for consistency in a mug rather than for the kind of careful small-pot brewing a loose leaf green would reward.

Our Commitment To The Planet
- An 80-bag box carries a quarter of the packaging per cup that four 20-bag boxes would, which is the simplest saving available on a tea you drink daily.
- Bag material and any compostability claim are printed on the current UK pack; card, inner film and used bags take different disposal routes, so follow the pack and your local-authority guidance.
- Green tea takes cooler water than black tea, so a kettle brought to 80 degrees rather than a full boil uses slightly less energy over a year of daily cups.

The taste profile
How does it compare
Everything about brewing this tea comes down to one number, and it is not the steep time. Green tea wants water at around 80 degrees Celsius rather than at a rolling boil, and getting that right converts the cup from bitter and grassy to clean and faintly sweet. There is no trick in the bag that compensates for pouring at 100.
