Nescafe Original Decaf Instant Coffee, 190g
Nobody switches to decaf because they have developed a new taste. They switch because of sleep, or the hour, or because it is the fourth cup of the day, and what they want is the mug they already drink with the caffeine taken out. That is the only brief that matters here, and this jar meets it more squarely than any other decaf on the shelf: dark, roasty, faintly smoky in the Original house style, with a real bite to it instead of the thin apologetic version most decaf jars settle for. Decaffeinated is not caffeine free, a trace stays behind, and if you need genuinely none of it then a herbal infusion is the honest answer rather than any coffee. And this is not a mild jar; anyone who found Original too assertive in the first place will find the decaf assertive as well.
Nescafe Original Decaf Instant Coffee, in brief.
Nescafe Original Decaf Instant Coffee is the decaffeinated version of Britain's most familiar instant jar in the 190g size, picked into the Teas.co.uk curator selection as the evening jar for people who want the mug they already drink without the caffeine.
A 190g jar giving roughly 105 mugs at a rounded teaspoon, keeping the dark, roasty Original house style rather than thinning it out, which is why it holds up with milk.
This is that mug. Original is the dark, roasty house style of the Nescafe range, and the decaf keeps it: the same bold, slightly smoky character rather than a thin, apologetic version of it. It is the jar to put in the cupboard alongside the caffeinated one so that six o'clock is not the end of coffee for the day.

The Story Behind Nescafe Original
Nescafe Original is the reference point for instant coffee in Britain. Whatever else is in the cupboard, this is the jar most people picture when the word instant is used, and that ubiquity sets an unusual constraint on the decaf: it cannot be a different coffee. A decaf that tastes noticeably weaker or flatter than the standard jar fails the only test that matters, because the person buying it is trying not to change anything except the caffeine. Nescafe do not publish the decaffeination process or a residual caffeine figure to us for this pack, so we are not going to quote either.
Packaging: Follow the current UK pack and local-authority guidance; components can require different disposal routes.
What You Are Actually Buying
- Weight: 190g of decaffeinated instant coffee.
- Mugs per jar: at a normal 1.8g teaspoon, 190g works out at roughly 105 mugs. Heap the spoon and you will get fewer. That arithmetic is ours, from the jar weight, not a claim printed on the label.
- Decaf, not caffeine free: decaffeinated coffee is coffee with almost all of the caffeine removed, not all of it. A trace remains. If you need genuinely zero caffeine, a herbal infusion is the honest answer, not any decaf coffee.
- Roast: the dark, roasty Original house style rather than a mild one, which is unusual in a decaf and is the main reason to choose this jar over a gentler decaf.
- What it is not: not flavoured, not a granule-and-bean hybrid, and not a low-caffeine version of the standard jar. It is the decaffeinated one.
Ideal Serving Conditions
Decaf instant is treated worse than any other coffee in the cupboard, usually because it is made last thing at night by somebody who is not paying attention. It responds to the same care as any other instant, and a badly made decaf is the main reason decaf has a poor reputation it does not deserve.
The Evening Mug
- Measure: one rounded teaspoon, about 1.8g, per 200ml mug. Do not under-dose it out of habit just because it is decaf; a weak decaf is what makes people give up on decaf.
- Water: let the kettle stand for thirty seconds after it clicks, so you are pouring at around 95 degrees Celsius. Water at a rolling boil scorches the granules and flattens the aroma.
- Order: granules first, a splash of hot water to dissolve them fully, then the rest of the water, then milk. That removes the grit at the bottom of the mug.
- Timing: a decaf still carries a trace of caffeine. If you are very sensitive, make it an hour earlier than you think you need to rather than at bedtime.
The Milky Nightcap
- Concentrate: two teaspoons in 60ml of hot water, stirred hard into a smooth dark paste.
- Milk: 150ml heated until steaming, not boiling. Boiled milk tastes of boiled milk and there is no coffee strong enough to hide it.
- Combine: pour the milk into the coffee base in one steady motion.
- Finish: a scrape of nutmeg or a pinch of cinnamon if you want it to feel like a nightcap rather than a leftover morning drink.
Getting It Right in the Cup
- Water temperature: around 95 degrees Celsius, not straight off a rolling boil.
- Measure: 1.8g, a rounded teaspoon, per 200ml mug, the same dose you would use for the caffeinated jar.
- Milk: the dark roast character stands up to it, which is why this jar makes a better milky mug than most decafs do.
- Sugar: add it while the water is hot rather than after the milk, so it dissolves properly.
- Storage: lid tight, in a cupboard, with a dry spoon. Instant coffee pulls moisture out of the air and clumps, and a jar kept next to a steaming kettle clumps fastest.
- Best with: after dinner, late evening, a biscuit, or any point in the day when the caffeinated jar would be a bad idea.

- 200ml water at 95 degrees Celsius
- Milk to taste
- Sugar if you take it
- Boil the kettle and let it stand for thirty seconds before pouring.
- Add one rounded teaspoon of Nescafe Original Decaf Instant Coffee, 190g with a splash of hot water and stir it to a smooth paste.
- Top with the rest of the water, stirring as you pour.
- Finish with milk, and sugar while it is still hot if you take it. Use the same dose you would use for the caffeinated jar.
What you'll end up with: A dark, rounded evening mug with none of the thinness people expect from a decaf. The dose is the part that matters.
Milky Nightcap with Nutmeg
How to make Milky Nightcap with Nutmeg with Nescafe Original Decaf.
- 2 teaspoons Nescafe Original Decaf
- 60ml water at 95 degrees Celsius
- 150ml hot milk
- A scrape of nutmeg
- Dissolve two teaspoons in only 60ml of hot water and stir hard into a smooth dark paste.
- Heat 150ml of milk until steaming but not boiling.

- Grate nutmeg over the top and drink it somewhere comfortable.
What you'll end up with: A proper nightcap rather than a leftover morning drink. Concentrating the coffee first is what keeps it tasting of coffee.
Instant Flat White, Decaf
How to make Instant Flat White, Decaf with Nescafe Original Decaf.
- 2 teaspoons Nescafe Original Decaf
- 60ml water at 95 degrees Celsius
- 150ml hot milk
- A frother or a jar with a lid
- Dissolve two teaspoons in 60ml of hot water until completely smooth.
- Froth 150ml of hot milk briefly, keeping the foam thin and glossy rather than stiff.
- Pour the milk in from a little height to start, dropping in close to finish.
- Drink straight away, while the foam still holds.
What you'll end up with: A convincing after-dinner milk coffee. The dark Original roast is what stops the milk swallowing it whole.
Iced Decaf After Dinner
How to make Iced Decaf After Dinner with Nescafe Original Decaf.
- 2 teaspoons Nescafe Original Decaf
- 60ml water at 95 degrees Celsius
- A full glass of ice

- Dissolve two teaspoons in 60ml of hot water and stir until smooth.

What you'll end up with: The iced coffee you can have at nine in the evening. A full glass of ice fixes the dilution rather than leaving it to chance.

How to make Decaf Affogato with Nescafe Original Decaf.
- 3 teaspoons Nescafe Original Decaf
- 80ml water at 95 degrees Celsius
- 2 scoops vanilla ice cream

- Dissolve three teaspoons in only 80ml of hot water so the coffee is properly concentrated.
- Scoop the ice cream into two cold glasses.
- Pour the hot coffee over at the table rather than in the kitchen.
- Grate dark chocolate over the top and serve immediately.
What you'll end up with: A dessert that will not keep anyone awake. Concentrating the instant is what gives it enough bite to cut the cream.
Coffee Chocolate Traybake, Decaf
How to make Coffee Chocolate Traybake, Decaf with Nescafe Original Decaf.
- 2 teaspoons Nescafe Original Decaf
- 1 tablespoon hot water
- Your usual chocolate traybake batter
- Dissolve two teaspoons of decaf in one tablespoon of hot water.

Brewing the perfect cup
What’s in it, what to know
Inside the pack
| Component | Proportion | What it brings |
|---|---|---|
| Decaffeinated instant coffee | 100% of the jar | Coffee that has been decaffeinated, brewed, concentrated and dried. Nothing else is added in a plain instant. |
| Roast depth | dark, Original house style | The reason to choose this jar. Roasty and faintly smoky rather than the mild profile most decaf jars settle for. |
| Format | instant granules | Already extracted and dried, so the mug takes seconds. You are rehydrating coffee solids, not brewing them. |

Sourcing & blend. Nescafe Original Decaf Instant Coffee, 190g is put together by Nescafe, and Original is the reference point for instant coffee in Britain: the jar most people picture when the word instant is used. That ubiquity is the constraint the decaf has to work under. A decaf of an unfamiliar coffee can taste like whatever it likes, but a decaf of the standard jar has to taste like the standard jar, because the person buying it is trying to change one thing only. Holding a dark, roasty profile through decaffeination is harder than letting it drift mild, and that is the work being sold here.
What's in Nescafe Original Decaf Instant Coffee, 190g, and what isn't:
- In: decaffeinated instant coffee, and nothing else. A plain instant jar is brewed coffee with the water taken out; it needs no additives.
- No artificial colours, preservatives or added sugar: this is an unsweetened black coffee product. Anything sweet in the mug goes in at your kitchen table.
- Not caffeine free: a trace of caffeine remains, as it does in every decaffeinated coffee. A herbal infusion is the choice if you need genuinely none.
- Packaging: follow the current UK pack and your local-authority guidance; jars, lids and seals often take different disposal routes.
