Nescafe Gold Blend Roastery Collection Light Roast Instant Coffee, 95g
Light roast is the whole product here, and it is a genuine change of drink rather than a change of livery. Beans pulled out of the roaster early keep the bright top end that a longer roast burns away, so the cup runs clean and citrus-edged with very little of the caramel weight people expect from a gold-labelled jar. Anyone who takes their coffee strong, dark and milky will find it thin. Anyone who drinks it black and long ago decided instant was flat and samey will find precisely the thing that was missing. Keep it for mid-morning and for warm weather. And do not read pale as gentle: a light roast is not a low-caffeine coffee, whatever the colour of the granule suggests.
Nescafe Gold Blend Roastery Collection Light Roast Instant Coffee, in brief.
Nescafe Gold Blend Roastery Collection Light Roast is the freeze-dried Gold jar pulled from the roaster early, trading the familiar caramelised depth for a clean acidity and a brighter, lighter cup that reads closer to a light filter than to instant, picked into the Teas.co.uk selection as the jar for people who drink their coffee black.
A 95g jar, the same size as the standard Gold Blend, so the two run side by side. At a rounded teaspoon per mug that is around 52 cups, by our own reckoning rather than a pack claim. It is a genuinely different drink: lighter in body, sharper on the finish, and at its best black.
Nescafe Gold Blend Roastery Collection Light Roast is the jar for people who have decided that instant coffee does not have to taste of roast. The Roastery Collection is the part of the Gold range that plays with the roast profile, and this is the lightest of them: the beans are taken out of the roaster early, before the sugars caramelise into the familiar toasted depth, and what survives instead is the brighter, more acidic top end that a darker roast burns away.
That is a genuine change of drink, not a marketing line, and it will not be to everybody's taste. A light roast reads thinner in the mouth and sharper on the finish, with something closer to citrus or stone fruit where a standard Gold Blend gives you caramel. If you drink your coffee strong, dark and with a lot of milk, this is the wrong jar and the standard Gold Blend is the right one. If you drink it black and have ever thought instant coffee tastes flat and samey, this is the one to try: what it adds is precisely what is usually missing.

The Story Behind The Jar
Nescafe has been making soluble coffee since 1938, and Gold Blend is the freeze-dried tier of that range, sitting above the spray-dried everyday jars. Freeze drying takes the brewed extract down to a frozen slab and pulls the water off under vacuum rather than blowing it out with heat, which keeps more of the aromatic compounds intact. On a standard Gold Blend that shows up as a rounder, sweeter cup. On a light roast it matters more, because the delicate top notes a light roast is built on are precisely the ones a hot spray-drying tower would destroy first. A light-roast spray-dried instant would be a fairly pointless object; a light-roast freeze-dried one has something to deliver.
The Roastery Collection sits on top of that as a roast-profile line rather than a quality ladder. It is the same freeze-dried process asking a different question: not how good can a soluble coffee be, but how different can one be. On this jar the answer is a cup that reads more like a light filter coffee than like instant, which is either the whole point or a disappointment depending on what you were hoping for.

Our Commitment To The Planet
- The jar that arrives is the current UK retail pack rather than a grey import carrying a different roast specification.
- An instant jar has no capsule, no filter paper and no spent puck. Of all the ways to make a hot black coffee at home, this one leaves the least behind.

The story behind Nescafé
Nescafé invented mass-market instant coffee in 1938 and has been refining it ever since. The Azera range brings cafe-quality micro-ground instant coffee; Gold Blend is the premium freeze-dried; the Original is the everyday standard.

The taste profile
How does it compare
There is a point worth making clearly here, because it catches people out. In a brewed light-roast coffee you would reach for hotter water, because a lightly roasted bean is denser and harder to extract. That advice does not transfer to this jar. The extraction has already happened in a factory; what is in the granule is finished coffee. The water is only dissolving it, so the temperature rule is the ordinary instant-coffee rule about not scalding the soluble, and hotter is not better.
The Standard Mug
The Long Black
Made with this tea
The Paste Method Mug
How to make The Paste Method Mug with Nescafe Gold Roastery Light Roast.
- 1 rounded teaspoon (about 1.8g) Nescafe Gold Roastery Light Roast
- 200ml water at about 90 degrees
- Boil the kettle and let it stand for thirty seconds. Do not be tempted to go hotter because it is a light roast; that rule belongs to brewed coffee, not to this.
- Spoon the coffee into a dry mug, add a splash of the hot water and stir to a smooth paste.
- Fill to 200ml and stir once more.
- Wait a minute before the first sip. The acidity reads cleanest just below drinking-hot.
What you'll end up with: A clean, bright black cup with almost no bitterness in it. Drink this one without sugar at least once; sugar flattens the acidity into something generic.
The Long Black
How to make The Long Black with Nescafe Gold Roastery Light Roast.
- 2 rounded teaspoons Nescafe Gold Roastery Light Roast
- 1 tablespoon hot water, then 300ml more
- A teaspoon for the paste
- Paste the two spoonfuls with a tablespoon of hot water in the bottom of a large mug.
- Fill to 300ml rather than 200ml, so the cup runs long rather than strong.
- Rest it a minute before drinking.
- Serve it black. This build is the one the jar was made for.
What you'll end up with: The closest a jar and a kettle get to a light filter coffee. A light roast carries dilution better than a dark one, because there is no bitterness being concentrated as the volume goes up.
Iced Light Roast
How to make Iced Light Roast with Nescafe Gold Roastery Light Roast.
- 2 rounded teaspoons Nescafe Gold Roastery Light Roast
- 30ml hot water, then 150ml cold
- A glass packed with ice
- A strip of orange peel
- Dissolve the coffee in the 30ml of hot water until completely clear.
- Lengthen with the cold water and stir.
- Pour over a glass packed to the top with ice.
- Twist the orange peel over the surface and drop it in.
What you'll end up with: The build where a light roast beats a dark one outright. Chilling flattens body and sweetness but leaves acidity intact, so this stays interesting cold where a dark jar goes hollow.
Coffee Tonic
How to make Coffee Tonic with Nescafe Gold Roastery Light Roast.
- 2 rounded teaspoons Nescafe Gold Roastery Light Roast
- 30ml hot water
- 150ml chilled tonic water
- Ice and a wedge of lime
- Dissolve the coffee in the hot water and let it cool for two minutes.
- Fill a tall glass with ice and pour the tonic in first.
- Pour the cooled coffee slowly over the back of a spoon so it layers.
- Squeeze the lime over the top and stir once at the table.
What you'll end up with: A long, dry, faintly bitter summer drink. The quinine in tonic works with a bright roast and fights a dark one, which is why this build needs this jar rather than any jar.
The Three Jar Roast Flight
How to make The Three Jar Roast Flight with Nescafe Gold Roastery Light Roast.
- 1 teaspoon Nescafe Gold Roastery Light Roast
- 1 teaspoon standard Nescafe Gold Blend
- 1 teaspoon Nescafe Original
- 3 x 150ml water at about 90 degrees
- Paste each one separately in its own cup, identical dose, identical water.
- Line them up lightest to darkest and taste left to right, black, no sugar.
- Go back to the first cup afterwards. It will taste different the second time.
- Note which one you finish. That is the jar to buy next.
Everything except the roast is held constant, so what changes between the cups is the roast and nothing else.
Coffee And Orange Syrup For Fruit
How to make Coffee And Orange Syrup For Fruit with Nescafe Gold Roastery Light Roast.
- 2 teaspoons Nescafe Gold Roastery Light Roast
- 60g caster sugar
- Juice and zest of 1 orange
- Oranges, peaches or berries to serve
- Warm the sugar with the orange juice until it dissolves, without letting it boil hard.
- Stir in the coffee off the heat so the aromatics are not cooked off.
- Add the zest and cool completely.
- Spoon over sliced fruit half an hour before serving.
What you'll end up with: A syrup that tastes of coffee and citrus rather than of burnt sugar. A light roast is the right choice because it sits alongside fruit instead of flattening it.
Brewing the perfect cup
What’s in it, what to know
Inside the pack
| Ingredient | Proportion | What it brings |
|---|---|---|
| Soluble coffee, freeze dried | the whole jar | There is nothing else in it. Freeze drying takes the water off under vacuum at low temperature, which is what keeps the delicate top notes a light roast depends on. |
| Roast level | light | The defining decision on this jar. The beans leave the roaster before the sugars caramelise, so brightness and acidity survive where toasted depth would otherwise be. |
| Measure per mug | ~1.8g | One rounded teaspoon per 200ml, which is roughly 52 mugs from the 95g jar by our reckoning. |

Sourcing & blend. Nescafe Gold Blend Roastery Collection Light Roast Instant Coffee, 95g is made by Nescafe, the Nestle coffee brand that has been producing soluble coffee since 1938. Gold Blend is the freeze-dried tier of that range and the Roastery Collection sits inside it as a roast-profile line rather than a quality ladder: the same drying process asking a different question of the beans. The coffee is a blend rather than a single origin and the split is not published on the jar, so we leave it at that. The jar you receive is the current UK retail pack rather than an import on a different roast specification.
What is in Nescafe Gold Blend Roastery Collection Light Roast Instant Coffee, 95g, and what is not:
- In: freeze-dried soluble coffee, and nothing else. No milk powder, no sugar, no flavouring.
- No artificial colours, preservatives or added sugar: this is a black coffee. What reads as fruit in the cup is roast character, not added flavouring.
