Dolce Gusto is Nescafe's own capsule system, and the capsules are a closed format: they fit Dolce Gusto machines and nothing else, and nothing from Nespresso, Tassimo or A Modo Mio fits a Dolce Gusto. The machine does the work. It drives hot water through the sealed pod under pressure, and the fill line printed on the capsule tells you where to stop.
This one is not, which is the reason the box holds thirty pods and thirty servings rather than sixteen pods and eight drinks. It is quicker, there is only one capsule to dispose of, and there is nothing to get wrong in the order you load them.

- Against the two-capsule cappuccino or latte pods: those give you a deeper foam cap and a bigger drink, at two capsules a time. This is one capsule, a smaller cup and more coffee character per mouthful.
- Against the Americano pod in the same range: the Americano is black and blank, so you add your own milk and control the ratio. This one arrives finished. The Americano wins on flexibility; this wins on the mornings when you are not in the mood to make decisions.

The standard serve
Cup:Use a proper flat white cup, somewhere around 160 to 200ml. A big mug spreads the same drink thinner and it will read weak and cool quickly.
Warm it:Run hot water into the cup and tip it out before brewing. Milk drinks lose heat faster than black coffee because they leave the machine cooler to begin with.
Fill line:Brew to the mark on the capsule as a baseline. Stopping a little short gives a stronger, creamier cup; running long thins it and pushes the milk note towards watery.
Drink it soon:The surface foam falls away within a couple of minutes and the texture goes with it.
The stronger version
Short pull:Stop the machine around three quarters of the marked line.
Result:A smaller, denser, more coffee-forward cup, closer to a cortado in size.
Or go the other way:add 40 to 50ml of hot milk after brewing if you want it longer and milder without buying a different pod.
