The Story Behind Dolce Gusto
Dolce Gusto is Nescafe's home machine system, and its whole design idea is breadth rather than purity. Where some pod systems chase espresso alone, Dolce Gusto set out to cover the whole coffee-shop menu at home: black coffees, milk drinks, chocolate, and the long list of flavoured lattes in between. That is why the machine uses high pressure and reads a barcode on each capsule to set the volume, and it is why a one-capsule flat white is possible at all. The system is closed, though, and that is the thing to know before buying: these pods fit Dolce Gusto machines and nothing else. What You Are Actually Buying
- Count: 16 pods, making 16 servings. One capsule per cup, with no second milk pod needed.
- Machine: Nescafe Dolce Gusto machines only. These capsules will not fit a Nespresso, a Tassimo, a Lavazza A Modo Mio or a supermarket own-system machine.

Ideal Serving Conditions
Pod machines are designed to remove the variables, which they largely do, and the few that are left are worth knowing. The three that change the cup most are the size of the vessel, the temperature of it, and whether the machine has been descaled recently.
The Standard Serve
- Cup: use a small cup, around 160 to 180ml. A flat white in a large mug is a weak latte, and the pod is dosed for the smaller vessel.
- Warm it: rinse the cup with hot water first. A cold ceramic cup takes several degrees off a small milk drink immediately, which is the usual reason a pod flat white tastes lukewarm.
- Volume: let the machine run its programmed volume rather than stopping it early. The capsule is dosed for that amount of water.
- Drink it: straight away. A flat white is a two-minute drink; the foam collapses and the balance goes with it.
Keeping the Machine Honest
- Descale: on the schedule the machine asks for, not when it stops working. Scale drops the brew temperature, and a cooler brew is the most common cause of a sudden decline in every pod you own.
- Water: fill the tank with fresh water daily. Water that has stood in the tank for a week tastes of the tank.
- Rinse: run a water-only cycle after a milk drink so the head is clear for the next capsule.
- Storage: keep the pods in their box, somewhere cool and dry. Individually sealed capsules are robust, but heat and light still age what is inside them.
Getting It Right in the Cup
- Vessel: 160 to 180ml, pre-warmed. This one change fixes most complaints about pod milk drinks.
- Sequence: follow the order printed on the capsule pack. Dolce Gusto milk drinks are built in a set order and reversing it changes the texture.
- Sweetening: unnecessary for most people. If you do sweeten it, do so immediately while the cup is at its hottest.
- Compatibility: Dolce Gusto machines only. Check your machine before you order.
- Best with: mid-morning, mid-afternoon, a biscuit, or the fifteen minutes between getting home and starting dinner.

- A short glass, not a tall one
- Put two or three ice cubes into a short glass. Not a full tall glass; this is a small drink and it will not survive that much ice.
- Run the capsule straight over the ice at its full volume.
- Stir once, briefly, so the foam folds through rather than sitting on top.
- Drink immediately, before the cubes have gone.
What you'll end up with: A cold milk coffee that still tastes of something. The restraint on the ice is the entire trick.
Cinnamon Flat White
How to make Cinnamon Flat White with Dolce Gusto Flat White.
- 1 Dolce Gusto Flat White pod
- A pinch of ground cinnamon
- A 160 to 180ml warmed cup
- Dust a pinch of ground cinnamon into the empty warmed cup.
- Run the capsule over it so the spice is carried up through the drink rather than sitting on the foam.
- Stir once if you want it even, or leave it if you want the first sip stronger.
- Serve with something plain and buttery.
