The Story Behind The Pack
Dolce Gusto is Nescafe's capsule system, and the idea behind it is that one machine covers black coffee and milk drinks without a separate steam wand. The capsules are sealed, pressurised at the moment of brewing and discarded whole, so the ground coffee inside never meets air between the factory and the cup. The trade is a familiar one: you give up the control a grinder and a basket would give you, and in return you get a repeatable cup and nothing to clean.
Within that system the range splits into single-capsule black coffees and two-capsule milk drinks. The Intenso sits in the first group, which is the half of the range that gives you a full box of servings rather than half of one. It is worth knowing that before comparing a sixteen-capsule black coffee against a sixteen-capsule latte, because the latte is eight drinks and this is sixteen.

- Fresh cold water in the tank
- A pre-warmed mug
- Warm the mug with hot water and tip it out.

- A tall glass packed with ice
- 100ml cold water
- A strip of orange peel, optional
- Pack the glass with ice right to the top.
- Draw the capsule short, straight over the ice.
- Top with 100ml of cold water and stir once.

- 20g dark chocolate, chopped
- 150ml hot milk
- Draw the capsule short into a warmed mug, over 20g of chopped dark chocolate.
- Stir until the chocolate has melted completely into the coffee.
- Pour in 150ml of hot milk and stir once more.
- Use real chocolate rather than cocoa powder; the dark roast has the weight to carry it.
What you'll end up with: A mocha where the coffee and the chocolate are both still present, rather than a sweet milk drink.
Dark Coffee Sauce For Pudding
How to make Dark Coffee Sauce For Pudding with Nescafe Dolce Gusto Americano Intenso.
- 2 capsules Nescafe Dolce Gusto Americano Intenso
- 100ml double cream
- 80g dark muscovado sugar
- 20g unsalted butter
- Draw two capsules short, to about 80ml of strong coffee in total.
- Melt 80g of dark muscovado sugar with 20g of butter in a small pan over a low heat.
- Pour in the coffee and 100ml of double cream, then simmer for six to eight minutes until it coats the back of a spoon.
- Serve warm over ice cream, sticky toffee pudding or a plain sponge.
What you'll end up with: A dark, bitter-edged coffee caramel that keeps for a week in a jar in the fridge.
