The Story Behind Dolce Gusto
Dolce Gusto is Nestle's own pod system, and it was built around a different idea from the espresso machines it sits next to. Where a Nespresso machine makes coffee and leaves the milk to you, Dolce Gusto puts the milk inside a pod and makes the whole drink, which is why its range runs to cappuccinos, lattes, mochas and this. The engineering trade-off is that a milk drink takes two pods, so a box of sixteen is eight drinks, and the commercial consequence is that the cost per drink is higher than the pod count suggests.

What You Are Actually Buying
- Count: sixteen pods making eight drinks. Two pods per serving, so the box empties twice as fast as the pod count suggests.
- Cost per drink: That is dear for a hot chocolate measured against a tin of powder, and it is the honest number rather than the per-pod one.
- Machine required: Nescafe Dolce Gusto only. These do not fit a Nespresso machine or a Tassimo machine, and no adapter makes them.
- No coffee: a hot chocolate, not a mocha. There is no coffee pod in this box, which is what makes it the family line in the range.
- Milk included: the milk is inside the pod in powder form, so the box needs no fridge and no frother. That also means this is not a dairy-free drink.
Ideal Serving Conditions
A pod machine removes most of the ways a drink can go wrong, which leaves a short list worth getting right. Pod order, volume and the state of the machine account for almost every disappointing cup.
The Proper Cup
- Order: milk pod first, then the chocolate, unless the box says otherwise. Building the milk underneath is what gives the finished drink its layered look and its foam head.
- Volume: stop at the level marked on the pod rather than filling the mug. Overshooting the mark is the commonest fault and it thins the chocolate immediately.
- Cup: a wide cup rather than a tall mug. The machine is dosing for a coffee-shop-sized serving, and a big mug simply looks half empty.
- Rinse: run a short water-only cycle afterwards. Milk powder and sugar left in the head is what makes the next coffee taste of this.
Getting More Out of the Box
- Make it richer: pull the milk pod slightly short of its mark so there is less liquid under the same chocolate. This is the fix if it reads watery.
- Make it iced: run both pods short into a jug, stir, then pour over a full glass of ice. Building directly onto ice dilutes the drink as it lands.
- Make it a float: a scoop of vanilla ice cream in the cup before you build the drink over it. A good use of the last pods in a box.

What you'll end up with: The best trick in the box. Eight hot chocolates become eight mochas, with the coffee strength under your control rather than the manufacturer's.
The Richer Build

- 1 milk pod, run short
- 1 chocolate pod, run to its mark
- A small cup
- Stop the milk pod about two thirds of the way to its mark.
- Run the chocolate pod fully on top of it.
- Serve in a small cup, because there is less liquid in the finished drink.
What you'll end up with: A shorter, denser, more chocolatey cup. This is the fix if the standard build reads thin, and it costs no extra pods.
Iced Chocolate

- 1 milk pod
- 1 chocolate pod
- A full glass of ice
- Run both pods short into a small jug rather than straight into the glass.
- Stir the two together while still warm.
- Pour over a full glass of ice, right to the top.
