LCurator note · Lavazza
Nine o'clock at night, a guest says yes to coffee and means it. That is the job here, and it is done properly. The roast is genuinely dark for a decaf rather than the pale, papery thing the category used to be, with cocoa on the crema and a short tidy finish. It sits lighter in the mouth than the caffeinated capsules on the same rack, and anyone moving straight across will notice the body has gone. Eco Caps describes the capsule body, not the coffee inside it, and what your council will take is a local question rather than a promise on a box. These fit Lavazza's own machines and nothing else. Few buyers have said anything either way, so we are pitching it on what it is: a decaf built on purpose rather than tolerated.

About this product

Lavazza A Modo Mio Dek, in brief.

Lavazza A Modo Mio Dek is the decaffeinated capsule in Lavazza's own A Modo Mio system, sold in the Eco Caps format, a properly dark Italian-style espresso with the caffeine taken out, picked into the Teas.co.uk curator selection as the after-dinner capsule that does not taste like a compromise.

Decaf has a reputation problem, and most of it was earned twenty years ago. A poorly made decaf is thin, papery and slightly sour, because removing caffeine from green coffee also strips aroma compounds if the process is careless, and because roasters have historically sent their weakest beans to the decaf line. What changed is that the big Italian houses started treating decaf as a product rather than an afterthought. This one is built to sit next to the caffeinated capsules on the same rack and to be drinkable by the same person, which is a more demanding brief than it sounds.

The Story Behind Lavazza And A Modo Mio

Lavazza is the Turin coffee house whose blends set the template for the Italian espresso most of Britain thinks of as ordinary coffee: dark, short, thick and drunk standing up. A Modo Mio is Lavazza's own capsule system, which matters more than it sounds. Unlike the brand's Nespresso-compatible ranges, these capsules are made for Lavazza's own machines and will not fit anything else, so the machine and the capsule are designed as one piece of equipment rather than two.

The Eco Caps name refers to the capsule body rather than the coffee inside it. It is the reason this pack exists alongside the standard capsule line, and the reason the disposal instructions on the box are worth reading rather than assuming: capsule disposal routes differ between local authorities, and what is accepted in one district is not always accepted in the next.

Tasting notes

The taste profile

Roast depth●●●●○ 4/5
Properly dark for a decaf, with the toasted, slightly cocoa note the Italian espresso style depends on.
Body●●●○○ 3/5
Rounded rather than heavy. It carries crema but does not coat the cup the way a full caffeinated espresso blend does.
Bitterness●●○○○ 2/5
Restrained. Softer than the caffeinated blends in the same range, which is deliberate.
Clean finish●●●●○ 4/5
Short and tidy, without the papery aftertaste that gives cheap decaf away.

Side by side

How does it compare

vs Lavazza A Modo Mio PassionaleThe caffeinated intensity capsule from the same rack, noticeably bolder and more bitter. Passionale is the morning capsule; Lavazza A Modo Mio Dek is what you reach for once the kitchen lights are on the dimmer.
vs Lavazza Espresso Maestro Decaffeinated Nespresso CompatibleThe same brand's decaf for a rival machine. Identical in intent, incompatible in fitting, so the choice is made by whichever machine is already on your worktop.

A capsule machine fixes the dose, the pressure and the temperature, so the way to get a better cup from Lavazza A Modo Mio Dek is to fix everything the machine does not control.

Ideal brewing conditions · Hot

The Standard Espresso Serve

01
Warm the cupRun a blank shot of hot water into the cup and tip it out. A cold cup takes several degrees off a 25ml espresso instantly, and decaf has less aroma to spare.
02
Fresh waterFill the tank with cold fresh water. Water standing in a tank overnight is the single most common cause of a flat capsule shot.
03
ShortTake it as a short espresso rather than a lungo. Pulling a decaf capsule long thins it out faster than it thins a caffeinated one.
04
Drink it nowEspresso crema collapses within a minute or two. Nothing about a decaf changes that.
Ideal brewing conditions · Hot

The Evening Macchiato

01
Pull shortOne capsule into a small cup, as short as the machine allows.
02
Stain itAdd one dessertspoon of hot milk, no more. The point is to soften the edge, not to make a latte.
03
No sugar firstTaste it before sweetening. A decent decaf is less bitter than the caffeinated blend and often needs less sugar than people expect.
04
ServeWith a square of dark chocolate, which is the traditional Italian answer to a late espresso.

The After-Dinner Espresso

How to make The After-Dinner Espresso with Lavazza A Modo Mio Dek.

2 min 1 espresso Easy
You'll need
  • 1 capsule Lavazza A Modo Mio Dek
  • Fresh cold water in the tank
  • 1 small espresso cup
Method
  1. Run a blank shot of hot water into the cup and tip it out.
  2. Load one capsule and pull a short 25 to 30ml espresso.
  3. Taste before you sweeten it; a good decaf usually needs less sugar than people expect.
  4. Drink within a minute, while the crema still holds.

What you'll end up with: A short, dark, properly Italian espresso you can have at nine in the evening without consequences.

Evening Macchiato

How to make Evening Macchiato with Lavazza A Modo Mio Dek.

3 min 1 small cup Easy
You'll need
  • 1 capsule Lavazza A Modo Mio Dek
  • 1 dessertspoon hot milk
  • 1 square dark chocolate
Method
  1. Pull one short espresso into a warmed cup.
  2. Add a single dessertspoon of hot milk, no more; the point is to stain it, not to make a latte.
  3. Serve with a square of dark chocolate on the saucer.
  4. Drink it standing up if you want the full effect.

What you'll end up with: The traditional Italian late-night compromise: softened just enough to be gentle, still unmistakably an espresso.

Decaf Americano

How to make Decaf Americano with Lavazza A Modo Mio Dek.

3 min 1 mug Easy
You'll need
  • 1 capsule Lavazza A Modo Mio Dek
  • 120ml hot water
  • 1 mug
Method
  1. Pull one short espresso into a mug.
  2. Top with about 120ml of hot water from the kettle.
  3. Do not ask the machine to pull the long volume through the capsule; adding water afterwards gives a better cup.
  4. Add a splash of milk if you want it.

What you'll end up with: A long evening coffee with the roast still intact, which is what a machine-pulled lungo loses.

Iced Decaf Shakerato

How to make Iced Decaf Shakerato with Lavazza A Modo Mio Dek.

5 min 1 glass Easy
You'll need
  • 2 capsules Lavazza A Modo Mio Dek
  • A glass of ice
  • 1 jar with a lid
  • 1 teaspoon sugar, optional
Method
  1. Pull two short espressos into a jar with a lid.
  2. Add a handful of ice and a teaspoon of sugar if you want it.
  3. Shake hard for fifteen seconds until the outside of the jar frosts.
  4. Strain into a chilled glass; it should arrive with a foam head.

What you'll end up with: A cold, foamed espresso that works better in decaf than most people expect, because cold suppresses bitterness.

Affogato, Late Edition

How to make Affogato, Late Edition with Lavazza A Modo Mio Dek.

3 min 2 servings Easy
You'll need
  • 2 capsules Lavazza A Modo Mio Dek
  • 2 scoops vanilla ice cream
  • A pinch of flaked sea salt
Method
  1. Put one scoop of vanilla ice cream into each of two small glasses.
  2. Pull one short espresso directly over each scoop.
  3. Finish with the smallest pinch of flaked salt.
  4. Eat immediately, before it turns into cold coffee soup.

What you'll end up with: The pudding version, and the decaf capsule is the right one for it because nobody wants an espresso hit at ten o'clock.

Coffee Syrup For Pouring

How to make Coffee Syrup For Pouring with Lavazza A Modo Mio Dek.

12 min + cool About 100ml Medium
You'll need
  • 3 capsules Lavazza A Modo Mio Dek
  • 80g caster sugar
  • 1 small pan
Method
  1. Pull three short espressos into a small pan.
  2. Add 80g of caster sugar and warm gently until it dissolves.
  3. Simmer for about eight minutes until it coats the back of a spoon.
  4. Cool and keep in a clean jar in the fridge for up to two weeks.

What you'll end up with: A decaf coffee syrup for pouring over ice cream, stirring into milk or brushing into a sponge, with no caffeine attached.

Brewing

Brewing the perfect cup

MachineLavazza A Modo Mio only. These capsules do not fit Nespresso, Dolce Gusto or Tassimo machines, and Lavazza sells a separate decaf capsule for Nespresso systems.
DoseOne capsule per cup, single use. The capsule is designed around one extraction and a second pass gives water with a memory of coffee in it.
Volume25 to 30ml for espresso. If your machine has a programmable button, set it short and leave it.
WaterCold, fresh, changed daily, and filtered in a hard water area.
DescalingOn schedule. Scale drops brewing temperature, and a cooler extraction is where decaf starts tasting sour.
Caffeine noteDecaffeinated is not the same as caffeine-free. A small residual amount remains, so if you need zero caffeine, read the current UK pack and take medical advice rather than ours.
Best withDark chocolate, almond biscotti, panettone, or nothing at all after a late dinner.

Sourcing & blend. Lavazza A Modo Mio Dek, Decaf Eco Caps, 16 Capsules 120g is roasted and packed by Lavazza, the Turin coffee house whose blends set the template for Italian espresso as most of Britain knows it. A Modo Mio is Lavazza's own capsule system rather than a compatible format, so the capsule and the machine are engineered together and the extraction is fixed by design. The Eco Caps name refers to the capsule body; the disposal route is printed on the box and differs by local authority.

What's in Lavazza A Modo Mio Dek, Decaf Eco Caps, 16 Capsules 120g, and what isn't:

  • In: roast and ground decaffeinated coffee, sealed one dose per capsule, with nothing else added.
  • No sugar, no flavouring, no milk: this is a plain espresso capsule.
  • Not caffeine free: decaffeination removes most of the caffeine, not all of it.
Product questions

Asked about this product

It is the Italian shorthand for decaffeinato, which is simply decaffeinated. Lavazza uses it across its ranges, so a capsule, a bag or a tin marked Dek is the decaf version of that blend.
