Lavazza has been blending and roasting in Turin for the Italian domestic market for well over a century, and Rossa is the line that carried the house into most of those kitchens. Blending, rather than single origin sourcing, is the skill the company is known for: assembling a cup that tastes the same in March as it did in November, from beans that never do.
The composition of the blend and the origins behind it are printed on the carton you receive, and the intensity figure on the box is Lavazza's own scale. What "Nespresso Compatible" Actually Means
Nespresso runs two systems that share a brand name and nothing else. The Original system takes a small conical capsule and forces water through it under pressure. The Vertuo system takes a larger domed capsule with a barcode printed around the rim and spins it instead. These capsules are cut to the Original shape, so they fit Original machines and they will not fit a Vertuo. They are also not Lavazza A Modo Mio capsules, which are Lavazza's own separate system for Lavazza's own machines. Three formats, all sold within a few feet of each other, and this is the single most common buying mistake in the category. If your machine takes the small cone, these work.

A long black that does not drag the drying tail of the extraction into the mug.

- 150ml hot water
- A warmed mug
- Pour 150ml of hot water into the mug first.
- Pull a 25 to 30ml espresso straight into it.
- Leave it a moment so the crema settles on the surface.
What you'll end up with: The same volume as a long pour, with the bitterness of the tail left behind in the capsule.
Flat White At 110ml
The most milk one Rossa capsule can carry and still taste of coffee.

- 110ml whole or oat milk
- A 160ml cup
- Steam or heat 110ml of milk to just below scalding, aiming for fine texture rather than big bubbles.
- Pull the espresso into the cup.
- Pour the milk in steadily from low down.
What you'll end up with: A flat white where the coffee still reads clearly under the milk, which the lighter capsules in this range cannot manage.
Shakerato
The Italian iced espresso, shaken rather than poured over ice.

- A shaker full of ice
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- A chilled coupe or tumbler
- Pull two short shots into the shaker.
- Stir the sugar in while the coffee is hot.
- Shake hard with ice for ten seconds.
- Strain into the chilled glass, leaving the ice behind.
What you'll end up with: A cold espresso with a thick foam head and none of the dilution that comes from pouring hot coffee onto ice.
Affogato
Pudding in ninety seconds, using the bite of the blend against the sweetness of the ice cream.

- A small bowl or glass
- Scoop the ice cream and take the bowl to the machine.
- Pull the espresso straight over it.
- Eat it immediately, while the contrast is at its sharpest.
What you'll end up with: Hot bitter coffee cutting through cold sweet cream, which is the whole point of the dish.
Caffè Corretto (Adult)
The end-of-evening Italian version, corrected with a spirit.

- Pull the espresso into a warmed cup.
- Add 10ml of grappa or brandy and do not stir.
