Chocolate covers only one side of a McVitie's Milk Chocolate Digestive, and that half-measure is the point of it. The sweetness arrives first and then the mouthful returns to a plain wholemeal biscuit, which is why it sits beside a mug of tea far more easily than a bar of chocolate would.
What the label says is in it
Read the published ingredient list and the proportions tell the story. Flour leads at 39%, milk chocolate follows at 30%, and wholemeal wheat flour, the source of the nutty, slightly branny note under the sweetness, comes in at 9%. Palm oil, sugar, glucose-fructose syrup, raising agents and salt make up the rest. In other words, close to a third of each biscuit by weight is chocolate, and all of it sits on one face.
The list gives wheat (gluten), milk and soya, so this is not a biscuit for a coeliac or dairy-free household, and the pack in your hand has the final word. Beneath the chocolate sits the plain digestive, the biscuit Alexander Grant created for McVitie's in 1892. The chocolate version followed in 1925, and McVitie's marked that centenary in 2025.
The 433g pack or the twin pack
We stock two formats. The 433g pack is a single pack, the right choice for a household that gets through it inside a week. The twin pack puts two 266g packs in one carton, 532g in total, and the second stays sealed until the first is finished. That matters more for a chocolate biscuit than a plain one, because chocolate left open in a cupboard soaks up whatever it sits next to.
Once a pack is open, fold the end over and clip it, or tip the biscuits into a tin, and keep them somewhere steady and cool, well away from the oven or a sunny windowsill. Chocolate that warms and sets again can turn pale on the surface. That film is bloom, fat that has crept outwards and crystallised, and it spoils the look of the biscuit rather than being a sign it has gone off.
Dunking with the chocolate side up
Give a plain digestive four or five seconds in hot tea; this one wants two, held chocolate side up so the coating stays out of the cup. Milk chocolate starts to soften at a far cooler temperature than a fresh brew, so a longer dip leaves a brown slick on your tea and a bare biscuit in your fingers.
For the cup, brew a strong black tea for about four minutes, add a splash of milk and leave out the sugar, since the chocolate brings plenty of sweetness. A malty breakfast blend meets milk chocolate without turning harsh. If coffee is more your thing, a short espresso works from the opposite direction, its bitterness cutting straight through the sweet face.

FAQ
Which side of a chocolate digestive is the top? Nobody has ever settled it and we will not try. For dunking, though, keep the chocolate side up and out of the tea.
What is in McVitie's Milk Chocolate Digestives? Flour, milk chocolate at 30%, palm oil, wholemeal wheat flour, sugar, glucose-fructose syrup, raising agents and salt, per the published list. It contains wheat (gluten), milk and soya.
How long should you dunk a milk chocolate digestive? About two seconds, chocolate side up. Any longer and the coating starts to slide off into the cup.
Is the twin pack the same biscuit as the 433g pack? Yes. The twin pack simply splits 532g into two sealed 266g packs, so half stays fresh while you work through the other.
How does it differ from the Original and Dark Chocolate Digestives? The Original is the same wholemeal biscuit with no coating, and the Dark Chocolate Digestives swap milk chocolate for dark. Choose milk when you want the soft, sweet, quick-melting coating.
Curator's note: Two seconds, chocolate up, and a strong mug with a splash of milk. Keep the twin pack in the cupboard and nobody ever has to eat a stale one. Lee, teas.co.uk, Tunbridge Wells.
