McVitie's Digestives Milk Chocolate Twin Pack Biscuits, 2 x 266g 532g
Some products give a curator something to push against. This one does not. The scores on it are as close to unanimous as anything on the shelf gets, and the sensible thing is to say so rather than manufacture a reservation for the sake of balance. It is a plain wholemeal round with a set chocolate face and it does exactly what everyone already knows it does. For stocking a cupboard, the first of those matters more. Wheat in the base and milk in the coating, so a coeliac diet rules it out and the full declaration sits on the current pack.
McVitie's Digestives Milk Chocolate Twin Pack Biscuits, in brief.
McVitie's Milk Chocolate Digestives is the plain wholemeal digestive with a milk chocolate layer across one face, and probably the best-known biscuit in Britain. This is the twin pack: two 266g packs, 532g in all, with the second staying sealed while you work through the first.
Brew strong, no sugar, and dunk chocolate side up for two seconds at most.
McVitie's Milk Chocolate Digestives is the plain digestive with a layer of milk chocolate across one face, and it is probably the single best-known biscuit in Britain. This is the twin pack: two 266g packs in one carton, 532g in all.
That 532g is worked out from the twin-pack description rather than read off a pack in front of us.

The Story Behind The Pack
McVitie's is one of the best-known names in British biscuit baking and the chocolate digestive is the line it is most identified with. That is heritage rather than a claim about where this carton was baked or what went into it. For the recipe, read the current UK pack.
What is worth noticing is how little of the biscuit the chocolate actually changes. One face carries it; the rest is the same wholemeal digestive, with the same short sandy crumb and the same faintly savoury edge. That asymmetry is the whole design. A fully coated biscuit reads as confectionery and can only be eaten as such; a single chocolate face gives you the sweetness at the front of the bite and then hands the mouthful back to the biscuit, which is why a chocolate digestive works with a mug of tea where a bar of chocolate does not. It also explains the one genuinely trivial argument this biscuit has generated: which side is the top. We are not going to settle it here.
Packaging: Follow the current UK pack and local-authority guidance; components can require different disposal routes.
Our Commitment To The Planet
- The carton you receive is the current UK retail pack, rather than an import made to a different recipe for another market.
- Two packs in one carton uses less outer material per biscuit than two singles, and the second pack stays sealed while you work through the first, which matters for a chocolate-faced biscuit: an open pack picks up cupboard smells through the chocolate rather more readily than a plain biscuit does.
Serving Notes For McVitie's Milk Chocolate Digestives Twin Pack, 2 x 266g
- Water temperature: Full boil. Nothing here is delicate.
- Measure: One bag per 200ml, two biscuits a person.
- Steep: Four minutes, strong, but stop short of stewed.
- Service: Milk yes, sugar no.
- Dunk: Briefly if at all, chocolate side up, two seconds.
- Storage: Cool, dry, sealed and away from anything strongly scented. Chocolate takes up cupboard smells far more readily than a plain biscuit does.
- Best with: A strong breakfast blend with milk, a plain black coffee, or a rooibos in the evening.

The taste profile
How does it compare
A chocolate digestive sits between two kinds of biscuit and the cup has to handle both: sweetness at the front of the bite, wholemeal behind it. Strong black tea is the settled answer in most British kitchens, and it is settled for a reason. The two builds below cover the standard mug and the dunk, which on this biscuit is a more delicate operation than on the plain one.
The Everyday Mug
The Careful Dunk
Made with this tea
The Everyday Mug
How to make The Everyday Mug with McVitie's Milk Chocolate Digestives.
- 1 bag standard black tea
- 200ml water at a full boil
- 2 chocolate digestives
- A splash of milk
- Brew one bag in 200ml straight off the boil for four minutes. Four rather than five; you want body, not a harsh edge.
- Add a splash of milk. Milk chocolate and milky tea agree with each other easily.
- Leave the sugar out. The chocolate face is supplying it.
- Take two, which is a firmer limit here than on the plain digestive.
The Two-Second Dunk
How to make The Two-Second Dunk with McVitie's Milk Chocolate Digestives.
- 1 chocolate digestive
- 1 mug of strong tea with milk
- Two seconds and some restraint
- Hold the biscuit chocolate side up, biscuit side down, gripping the dry end.
- Dunk half of it for two seconds, keeping the chocolate face clear of the tea for as long as you can.
- Lift immediately. Chocolate softens well below tea temperature and has nothing holding it on once it goes.
- Eat at once: a warm chocolate layer over a tea-soaked crumb, which is the best version of this biscuit there is.
What you'll end up with: Half the dunk time of a plain digestive, and the difference between the best bite of the day and chocolate in the bottom of the mug.
The Evening Rooibos
How to make The Evening Rooibos with McVitie's Milk Chocolate Digestives.
- 1 bag rooibos
- 200ml water at about 95 degrees
- 2 chocolate digestives
- Steep the rooibos five to six minutes; it does not turn bitter with time.
- Serve it without sugar, so the biscuit is the only sweet thing in the arrangement.
- Eat alongside rather than dunked, which also saves the chocolate.
What you'll end up with: A caffeine-free version of the same tea break, for late in the evening.
No-Bake Chocolate Fridge Slice
How to make a No-Bake Chocolate Fridge Slice with McVitie's Milk Chocolate Digestives.
- 200g chocolate digestives, broken
- 100g butter
- 150g dark chocolate
- 2 tablespoons golden syrup
- Break the biscuits by hand into rough pieces rather than crushing them, so the wholemeal crumb keeps its texture.
- Melt the butter, dark chocolate and syrup together gently and take the pan off the heat.
- Fold the pieces through. Use dark chocolate in the mix, because the biscuits are already bringing milk chocolate and sweetness.
- Press into a lined tin and chill three hours before cutting.
What you'll end up with: The coarse wholemeal crumb holds its own against the chocolate instead of disappearing into it, which a plainer biscuit would not.
The Second Pack Rule
How to store McVitie's Milk Chocolate Digestives once the carton is open.
- The opened pack
- A clip or an airtight tin
- A cool steady cupboard, not the fridge
- Leave the second 266g pack sealed until you need it; that is the whole advantage of a twin pack.
- Clip or decant the open one, and keep it away from anything strongly scented, because chocolate takes up cupboard smells readily.
- Avoid a warm cupboard. Softened chocolate that cools again can set with a pale bloom, which is surface fat rather than spoilage.
- Skip the fridge, which gives you a hard, muted chocolate layer and no benefit.
What you'll end up with: A minute of housekeeping that decides whether the second pack is as good as the first.

| Ingredient | Proportion | What it brings |
|---|---|---|
| Milk chocolate layer | one face | The first thing you meet and the reason this outsells the plain version. It melts at mouth temperature, which is why the sweetness arrives at the front of the bite and then gives way. |
| Wholemeal digestive base | the rest of the biscuit | Unchanged from the plain version: nutty, faintly bran-like and short in the crumb. It is what stops a chocolate-faced biscuit reading as confectionery. |
| Fat | in both layers | Responsible for the short sandy crumb in the base and for the melt in the chocolate. It is also the component that softens in a warm cupboard and blooms when it cools again. |
| Pack weight | 2 x 266g | 532g to the carton, worked out from the twin-pack description. |

Sourcing & blend. McVitie's Milk Chocolate Digestives are made by McVitie's, one of the best-known names in British biscuit baking, and the chocolate digestive is the line the brand is most identified with. That is heritage rather than a claim about where this carton was made or what is in it. The carton you receive is the current UK retail pack rather than an import made to a different recipe for another market. The reading of the single chocolate face as a deliberate design decision, giving sweetness at the front of the bite and then handing the mouthful back to the biscuit, is our own editorial assessment against the current pack format and the brand's published description.
What is in McVitie's Digestives Milk Chocolate Twin Pack Biscuits, 2 x 266g 532g, and what is not:
- In: two sealed 266g packs of wholemeal digestive biscuits with a milk chocolate layer across one face, 532g in all, in one outer carton.
- Not fully coated: the chocolate is on one side only, which is why this still eats as a biscuit rather than as confectionery. That is a description of the format rather than a claim off the pack.
- Not a four-second dunker: the plain digestive will take four or five seconds; this one will not, because chocolate softens well below tea temperature. Two seconds, chocolate side up.
