LCurator note · McVitie's
In a house with children this box has a very short life, and in a house without one it will still be half full a fortnight later. That is the most useful thing I can tell you about whether it belongs in your cupboard. It is an impulse rather than a list item; almost nobody sets out for it and plenty of people come home with it. Wheat in the round, milk in the coating.

About this product

McVitie's White Digestive Biscuits, in brief.

McVitie's White Digestives is the wheatmeal digestive under a white chocolate coating, 232g to the pack. Picked into the Teas.co.uk selection as the sweet, creamy end of the coated digestive shelf, for anyone who finds the milk version a shade dry.

Keep it cool and dark, and give it no more than two seconds in the tea.

McVitie's White Digestives is the plain wheatmeal digestive with a white chocolate coating across one face, 232g to the pack.

The white version is not the milk one in a different colour. White chocolate carries no cocoa solids at all, only cocoa butter, milk solids and sugar, so it reads sweeter and softer than a milk coating and it has nothing bitter in it to push back against the biscuit underneath. On a digestive, whose own character is toasted wheat and a distinct salt edge, that shifts the whole balance rather than just the colour. If you find milk chocolate digestives a shade dry, this is the sweeter, creamier answer. If what you like about a chocolate digestive is the cocoa bitterness doing the work, buy the milk or the dark one instead, and we would rather say so here than after you have opened the pack.

The Story Behind The Pack

McVitie's built the digestive into a British staple and then spent a century putting things on top of it. The biscuit itself is the constant: a coarse wheatmeal dough baked dry, with enough salt in it to stop the sweetness running away. Everything that has ever been added to a digestive, milk chocolate, dark chocolate, caramel or this white coating, is a variation on one base, and the base is the reason any of them work. A plain sweet biscuit under white chocolate would be cloying inside two biscuits. A digestive is not, because it brings salt and toasted grain to the argument.

The white coating is the most demanding of the family to keep in good condition. It carries no cocoa solids and a higher proportion of milk and sugar, which makes it softer at room temperature and quicker to take up warmth from a hand, a pocket or a car. It is also the variant most obviously affected by light and by age, so a cool dark cupboard matters more here than it does with the dark chocolate version.

Our Commitment To The Planet

  • The pack that arrives is the current UK retail pack rather than an import made to a different recipe for another market.
  • A 232g pack is a size most households finish, and that matters more than it sounds. The commonest way a coated biscuit is wasted is by going soft at the back of a cupboard, not by being thrown out whole.
  • The outer wrapper and any inner tray take different recycling routes, and those routes differ by council. Read the current UK pack and check locally.
  • We are not going to dress a biscuit up as anything other than a biscuit. It is priced and sold as one, and the honest sustainability answer is to buy a size you will actually eat.

Serving Notes For McVitie's White Digestive Biscuits, 232g

  • Water temperature: Full boil. There is nothing delicate in this pairing.
  • Measure: One bag per 200ml, two biscuits a person.
  • Steep: Three to four minutes, strong rather than medium.
  • Service: A splash of milk helps, sugar does not.
  • Dunk: Two seconds at most. The coating is the first thing to give.
  • Iced version: An unsweetened cold-brewed black tea over ice works better here than it does with most biscuits, because cold suppresses sweetness in the cup and lets the coating carry it instead.
  • Best with: Strong black tea with a splash of milk, plain filter coffee, or cold milk.

Tasting notes

The taste profile

White chocolate coating●●●●○ 4/5
Sweet, creamy and almost free of bitterness, because there are no cocoa solids in it to supply any. It also softens in the hand sooner than a milk coating does.
Toasted wheatmeal base●●●●○ 4/5
The digestive underneath is unchanged: coarse, dry, faintly nutty from the bake, and carrying the salt note that makes a digestive a digestive rather than a sweet biscuit.
Sweetness●●●●○ 4/5
Higher than the milk chocolate version. Nothing in the coating counterbalances the sugar, so the salt in the base is doing that job on its own.
Snap●●●●○ 4/5
A clean dry break across the biscuit rather than a crumble, which is the property that lets a digestive survive a dunk at all.

Side by side

How does it compare

vs McVitie's Milk Chocolate Digestive Biscuits, 266gThe same base under a milk coating, where cocoa bitterness works against the sugar. Less sweet, firmer in the hand, and the better dunker of the two.
vs McVitie's Hobnobs The White Oaty One, 232gThe same white coating on an oat biscuit instead of a wheatmeal one. Chewier, more obviously oaty, and it holds a dunk noticeably longer than this does.

What suits it is a brew with some tannin in it and no sugar at all, strong enough to cut the coating and reset the palate before the next biscuit rather than sitting alongside it and adding to the sweetness.

Ideal brewing conditions · Hot

The Everyday Mug

01
BrewA standard English breakfast or a Yorkshire-style blend, one bag per 200ml at a full boil, three to four minutes. Take it to the stronger end.
02
MilkA splash, no more. Too much milk rounds the cup off and then there is nothing left to balance the coating.
03
SugarNone. The biscuit has brought all of it already.
04
DunkTwo seconds, coated face up, and out. White chocolate goes slack faster than milk chocolate does, so this is not a biscuit to leave in the mug.
Ideal brewing conditions · Hot

The Afternoon Pot

01
BrewA pot of Assam or a robust Ceylon, four minutes, poured strong. Brisk tea and a sweet coating is an old pairing and it still works.
02
ServeTwo biscuits a person on a plate rather than the pack on the table, which is how a 232g pack lasts more than one sitting.
03
Why it worksTannin cleans the film that a creamy coating leaves behind, so the second biscuit tastes like the first rather than like more of it.
04
AvoidMilky, sweetened builder's tea and anything with vanilla or caramel in it. Sweet against sweet and the biscuit disappears.

Made with this tea

The Two Second Dunk

How to dunk McVitie's White Digestives without losing half of it in the mug.

4 min 1 mug Easy
You will need
  • 2 McVitie's White Digestives
  • 1 bag strong black tea
  • 200ml water at a full boil
  • A splash of milk
Method
  1. Brew one bag of strong black tea in 200ml of water at a full boil for three to four minutes, then add a splash of milk and no sugar.
  2. Hold the biscuit coated face up, which keeps the coating out of the hottest part of the mug.
  3. Dunk for two seconds and lift it straight out.
  4. Eat it immediately. A dunked digestive has a working life of about four seconds.

What you will end up with: A biscuit that has softened through without collapsing, and a cup with enough tannin left to reset the palate before the second one.

White Chocolate Digestive Cheesecake Base

How to make a cheesecake base from McVitie's White Digestives.

15 min + chill 8 slices Easy
You will need
  • 200g McVitie's White Digestives
  • 70g melted butter
  • Zest of one lemon
  • A pinch of salt
Method
  1. Crush the biscuits to a fine crumb in a bag with a rolling pin, coating and all.
  2. Stir in 70g of melted butter, the lemon zest and a pinch of salt. Use less butter than a plain digestive base needs, because the coating brings fat of its own.
  3. Press firmly into a lined 20cm tin and chill for an hour before filling.
  4. Skip the sugar the recipe asks for in the base. There is plenty in the coating already.

What you will end up with: A sweeter, creamier base than plain digestives give, which suits a sharp lemon or passionfruit filling rather than a sweet one.

Fridge Tiffin With White Chocolate

How to make a no-bake fridge cake with McVitie's White Digestives.

20 min + chill 12 pieces Easy
You will need
  • 250g McVitie's White Digestives, broken
  • 100g butter
  • 2 tablespoons golden syrup
  • 200g dark chocolate
  • 80g dried sour cherries
Method
  1. Break the biscuits into rough pieces by hand rather than crushing them; you want rubble, not crumb.
  2. Melt 100g of butter with 2 tablespoons of golden syrup, then stir through the biscuit and the dried sour cherries.
  3. Press into a lined tin and pour 200g of melted dark chocolate over the top.
  4. Chill for three hours and cut into small squares with a hot knife.

What you will end up with: Dark chocolate on top against a white-coated biscuit underneath, with the sour cherries stopping the whole thing turning into sugar.

Afternoon Plate For Four

How to serve McVitie's White Digestives with a pot of tea for four.

6 min 4 people Easy
You will need
  • 8 McVitie's White Digestives
  • 4 teaspoons Assam or strong Ceylon
  • 800ml water at a full boil
  • Milk to taste
Method
  1. Brew a pot of Assam or a robust Ceylon for four minutes and pour it strong.
  2. Plate two biscuits a person rather than putting the pack on the table, which is how a 232g pack lasts more than one sitting.
  3. Pour a splash of milk and leave the sugar in the cupboard.
  4. Serve straight away; a coated biscuit left on a warm plate starts to soften at the edges.

What you will end up with: A brisk cup against a sweet coating, which is an old British pairing and still the one that works best.

Ice Cream Sandwich

How to build an ice cream sandwich with McVitie's White Digestives.

10 min + freeze 4 sandwiches Easy
You will need
  • 8 McVitie's White Digestives
  • 4 scoops vanilla or coffee ice cream
  • Flaky sea salt
Method
  1. Soften the ice cream for five minutes so it spreads rather than cracks the biscuit.
  2. Sandwich a scoop between two biscuits, coated faces inward, and press gently.
  3. Scatter a few flakes of sea salt on the exposed ice cream at the edge; salt is what keeps a white chocolate pairing from cloying.
  4. Freeze for thirty minutes before eating so the biscuit firms up again.

What you will end up with: A sweet, creamy sandwich held together by the salt in the digestive base, which is the reason this works better than it does with a plain sweet biscuit.

Cold Brew And Biscuits

How to serve McVitie's White Digestives with unsweetened iced tea.

5 min + overnight 2 glasses Easy
You will need
  • 4 bags strong black tea
  • 600ml cold water
  • Ice
  • 4 McVitie's White Digestives
Method
  1. Steep four bags of strong black tea in 600ml of cold water in the fridge overnight, then lift the bags out.
  2. Pour over plenty of ice, unsweetened.
  3. Serve two biscuits a person alongside rather than dunking; a cold cup does not soften a biscuit the way a hot one does.
  4. Keep the remaining brew no more than two days in the fridge.

What you will end up with: Cold suppresses sweetness in the cup, so the biscuit supplies all of it and the pairing comes out cleaner than a hot mug manages in summer.

Characterising components shown.

Sourcing & blend. McVitie's White Digestive Biscuits, 232g is made by McVitie's, the firm that made the digestive a British household staple and has been adding coatings to it ever since. The base is the constant across the whole family: a coarse wheatmeal dough baked dry, salted enough to hold its own against whatever goes on top. The pack you receive is the current UK retail pack rather than an import made to a different recipe for another market. The reading of the white coating as sweeter, creamier and softer than a milk one is general confectionery behaviour and our own editorial assessment against the current pack format and the brand's published description, not a claim taken off this pack.

What is in McVitie's White Digestive Biscuits, 232g, and what is not:

  • In: wheatmeal digestive biscuits with a white chocolate coating on one face, 232g to the pack.
  • Not the milk version: white chocolate has no cocoa solids in it, so there is no bitterness balancing the sugar. It is a sweeter biscuit than the milk chocolate digestive, and deliberately so.
  • Not a long dunker: two seconds is the limit. The coating gives before the biscuit does.
Product questions

Asked about this product

The biscuit is the same coarse wheatmeal digestive. The coating is not. White chocolate contains no cocoa solids, only cocoa butter, milk solids and sugar, so it is sweeter, creamier and carries none of the bitterness that balances a milk coating.
