A lungo capsule is not a weak espresso: it has a different dose and grind, designed for about twice the water. Get the button right and this small box gives you a straight answer on whether a deep, low-acid long coffee is your kind of cup.
Two buttons, two different results
Where your machine offers a short and a long button, the capsule decides which is right. Run this lungo under the espresso button and the cup comes out small and underpowered, with much of its flavour left behind in the capsule. Do it the other way round, an espresso capsule on the long setting, and the water outlasts the coffee, so the cup turns thin and harsh.
Profondo means deep, and the roast lives up to the name, with cocoa and toasted grain well ahead of any fruit. Spread over about 110ml, that depth reads as a full, smooth mug with a soft bitter finish that clears. Intensity 8 is L'Or's own scale for roast depth and perceived strength, not caffeine, and spread across a long cup an 8 reads gentler than the same number would in a short shot.
What ten capsules can tell you
Ten capsules is roughly ten mornings, long enough to learn the style without committing to a big carton. Use them to settle two questions: does a deep, low acid long cup suit your taste, and do you prefer it black or with milk? If the first answer is yes, we also stock Lungo Profondo in a box of forty, which is the one to move on to.
It makes a solid base for milk, because the cocoa character is still there once the milk goes in. A mug with a splash of cold milk is the easy test, and a longer drink with frothed milk works too. Very little acidity means it will not satisfy anyone chasing a bright, fruity cup, and that is by design rather than a flaw.
Aluminium, machine fit and the rest of the range
The capsules are aluminium, which holds the coffee in an airtight seal until the machine pierces it, and that matters most with a dark roast, whose aroma is the first thing to fade. L'Or sells them as compatible with Nespresso Original machines, with some Original models excluded by L'Or, and they will not work in a Vertuo, which only takes its own barcoded capsules.
Within the L'Or capsules we stock, Lungo Profondo is the one built for a long cup. Supremo at 10 and Ristretto at 11 are short, darker shots for a small cup, and the Ristretto Decaf covers the evening. If you drink from a mug rather than an espresso cup, this is the one to start with. Used capsules can go through Podback, the UK pod recycling scheme L'Or takes part in.

FAQ
What happens if I put a lungo capsule on the espresso setting? You get a short, flat cup, because the dose and grind are set for about 110ml of water. Use the long button.
What does profondo mean on the box? Deep. It describes the roast, which puts cocoa and toasted grain ahead of fruit.
Why start with ten capsules rather than forty? Ten mornings is enough to know if a deep, low acid long cup is for you before you fill a cupboard with it.
Is it good with milk? Yes. The cocoa character stays in the cup once the milk goes in, where a light, bright capsule tends to disappear.
Does the aluminium capsule make a difference? Yes. Aluminium keeps air out until the moment of brewing, and a dark roast loses its aroma before anything else, so the seal is what protects it.
Curator's note: Drink the first one black and the second with a splash of milk. Between them they tell you whether the forty is worth buying. Lee, teas.co.uk, Tunbridge Wells.
