How to Brew Tetley Pure Green Tea

The everyday Tetley green done properly: 80C water, a 90-second kettle rest and a 2 to 3 minute steep for a smooth, non bitter cup.

How To Brew Tetley Pure Green Tea

Tetley Pure Green Tea is the everyday brew done properly: water at 80C, a short steep and a prompt lift of the bag. Get those three things right and you get the smooth, pale golden cup this green is built for, with the gentle vegetal sweetness and clean finish, and none of the harsh, grassy bitterness that puts so many people off bagged Green Tea.

The single rule that matters is temperature. Tetley use a steamed, Rainforest Alliance Certified leaf that stays light and fresh rather than stewed, but boiling water still scorches it. Let the kettle rest for about 90 seconds before you pour and the cup rewards you every time.

You'll need

  • 1 tea bag of Tetley Pure Green Tea
  • 200ml just off boil water cooled to about 80C (boil the kettle, then let it stand for roughly 90 seconds)
  • Optional: 1 thin slice of lemon to brighten the cup

Method

  1. Boil fresh water, then let the kettle stand for about 90 seconds so it drops to roughly 80C. Water at a full 100C scalds green tea and turns it bitter.
  2. Put one Tetley Pure Green Tea bag in your mug and pour over 200ml of the cooled water.
  3. Steep for 2 to 3 minutes, no longer. Then lift the bag out and let it drain on its own. Do not squeeze it, as squeezing forces out the harsh tannins.
  4. Drink it as it is. The natural sweet, vegetal notes need no milk or sugar. Add a thin slice of lemon only if you like a brighter cup.
  5. The same bag takes a second short steep, giving a milder but still flavourful cup.
What you'll end up with: A clear, pale golden green cup with a light, silky body, gentle vegetal sweetness and a clean, crisp finish, ready in about four minutes.
