Lavazza Espresso Maestro Decaffeinated Nespresso Compatible, 10 Capsules
Households with one machine and one late drinker are exactly who this is for. Same short serve, same Italian roast character of cocoa and toast, with slightly less body in reserve than the caffeinated Maestro capsules carry. That reserve is why technique matters more here than anywhere else on the same machine: warm the cup first, keep the pour short, drink it while the crema is still sitting on top. Aroma is the first thing decaffeination costs, and a cold cup or a long pour takes what is left of it. Milk to about 100ml, past which you are mostly drinking milk.
Lavazza Espresso Maestro Decaffeinated Nespresso Compatible, in brief.
Lavazza Espresso Maestro Decaffeinated is the capsule that keeps an espresso habit going after four in the afternoon. Ten Nespresso-compatible capsules, dosed for the same short pour as the rest of the Maestro range, with the caffeine taken out of the green beans before roasting rather than out of the cup afterwards.
Decaffeinated is not caffeine-free: a small residual amount stays in the cup, which is why the word on the box is the one it is. They fit Nespresso Original machines, not Vertuo and not Lavazza A Modo Mio. Warm the cup and drink it promptly, because aroma is the one thing decaffeination really costs you and both of those habits win some of it back.
Lavazza Espresso Maestro Decaffeinated is the capsule that lets a household keep its espresso habit after about four in the afternoon. Ten Nespresso-compatible capsules, dosed for a short pour like the rest of the Maestro range, with the caffeine taken out of the beans before roasting.
Decaffeination happens to green beans, before any roasting, and that ordering matters. The caffeine is drawn out of the unroasted bean while it is swollen with water, by one of several industrial processes, and only then is the bean dried and roasted like any other. The method used for a particular coffee is a pack-level fact and is often printed on the carton, so read yours if the distinction matters to you. What is worth knowing regardless is that the process does something to the structure of the bean, and roasters have to compensate for it. That compensation is why decaf from a serious roaster tastes considerably better than decaf from a careless one.

The honest position on flavour is this. A decaffeinated espresso rarely has quite the aromatic lift or quite the weight of its caffeinated equivalent, and anyone who tells you the difference is undetectable is selling something. What a good decaf gives you is a cup that is unmistakably an espresso rather than a disappointing imitation of one: the roast character, the crema, the short intense serve. Lavazza of Turin has been blending for the Italian domestic market for well over a century, and this capsule is built to the same short-serve brief as the rest of the Maestro line rather than treated as an afterthought.
Decaffeinated is not caffeine-free
The word on the box is decaffeinated, and it is chosen carefully. Decaffeination removes the great majority of the caffeine from the bean; it does not remove all of it, and a small residual amount stays in the cup. For most people that is neither here nor there. If you are avoiding caffeine on medical advice, or you are unusually sensitive to it, that residual amount is the reason to treat a decaf espresso as a low-caffeine drink rather than as a caffeine-free one, and to follow whatever guidance you have been given rather than this page.
The carton is the place to look.
Packaging: Follow the current UK pack and local-authority guidance; components can require different disposal routes.
How Lavazza Maestro Decaffeinated compares
- Against Lavazza Maestro Intenso: the same system, the same short serve, and the caffeine removed. Intenso is darker and denser and holds up better under milk. This one is the evening capsule. Most households that buy one end up buying both and keeping them side by side, which is the sensible answer rather than a compromise.
- Against Lavazza Qualità Oro or Rossa capsules: both are caffeinated everyday blends and both are livelier in the cup. If your problem is the time of day rather than the coffee, this is the capsule that solves it; if your problem is the coffee, one of those two will suit you better.
Getting the best out of it
Decaf is less forgiving than caffeinated coffee, not more, because it starts with a little less aroma and a little less body in hand. Everything that helps a normal espresso helps this one more, and everything that hurts one hurts this one more.
The short serve
Button: The espresso button, roughly 25 to 30ml. A long pour on a decaf is the fastest route to a thin, papery cup, because there is less body to spare in the first place.
Warm the cup, properly: Hot water in, tipped out, every time. This matters more here than anywhere else in the range, since aroma is the dimension decaffeination costs you and a cold cup takes more of it away.
Drink it immediately: Crema is a foam and foams collapse. With a decaf you have less aromatic material to lose, so losing it to a two-minute wait is expensive.
Water: Filtered, if your area is hard. Scale lowers the real brewing temperature and flattens crema, and a decaf shows that sooner than a caffeinated capsule does.
The evening build
Straight after dinner: The traditional Italian serve and the one this capsule is for. Small cup, no milk, a glass of water alongside.
A decaf flat white: Works, with milk kept to about 100ml. Push past that and the milk takes over faster than it would with a caffeinated dark roast.
Corretto: A short pour with 10 to 15ml of grappa or brandy, undisturbed. A decaf base makes this an end-of-evening drink rather than a bad idea at eleven o'clock.
Affogato: Over vanilla ice cream. This is the build where nobody notices the caffeine is missing, because the sweetness is doing the talking.
Practical notes on the pack
- Pack: 10 capsules, one espresso each, so ten drinks from the carton.
- Machine fit: Nespresso Original machines. Not Vertuo, which uses a larger domed capsule with a barcode around the rim, and not Lavazza A Modo Mio, which is Lavazza's own separate system.
- Decaffeination method: often printed on the carton. It is a pack-level fact and we have not assumed which process was used.
- Capsule material and recycling: printed on the current pack. Aluminium, plastic and compostable capsules all take different routes, and kerbside rules vary by council.
- Storage: cool, dry and dark. Capsules are individually sealed, so the carton is mainly protecting them from heat and crushing.
- Do not refill: capsules are sealed and pressurised while the machine runs.
Ingredients, allergens and storage
What is in it: decaffeinated roasted and ground coffee, sealed in a capsule. The machine adds water; nothing else is needed.
Ingredients and dietary suitability: Check the current UK pack before purchase; formulations and allergen advice can change.
Allergen note: read the latest carton if that matters to you.
Caffeine and sensitivity: decaffeinated coffee still contains a small amount of caffeine. If you are avoiding caffeine on medical advice, are pregnant, or are following guidance on your intake, treat this as a low-caffeine drink rather than a caffeine-free one and follow the advice you have been given.
Keep capsules out of reach of children: and do not open them. They are sealed, and pressurised in use.

The taste profile
How does it compare
Lavazza Espresso Maestro Decaffeinated Nespresso Compatible, 10 Capsules arrives as a fixed dose, so these builds are about the cup, the volume and what goes in after the shot rather than about changing the brew. Five serves, all of them chosen because they work after dinner rather than before breakfast.
Made with this tea
The After-Dinner Espresso
The serve this capsule exists for, and the one that shows the roast at its best.
- 1 Maestro Decaffeinated capsule
- Filtered water in the tank
- A small espresso cup
- A glass of cold water alongside
- Warm the cup with hot water and tip it out. This matters more on a decaf than anywhere else.
- Pull the shot on the espresso button, about 25 to 30ml, and no further.
- Drink it straight away, while the crema still holds.
- Sip the water afterwards, the way it is served in Italy.
What you'll end up with: A short espresso with real roast character and a moderately long finish, at ten at night, without consequences.
The Decaf Americano
A mug of black coffee in the evening, without running the capsule long.
- 1 Maestro Decaffeinated capsule
- 110 to 130ml hot water
- A warmed mug
- Pour the hot water into the warmed mug first.
- Pull a short 25 to 30ml espresso straight into it.
- Keep the water volume down; a decaf has less body to stretch than a caffeinated capsule.
- Leave the crema on top rather than stirring it in.
What you'll end up with: A long black cup that still has body, because the drying end of the extraction never left the capsule.
Decaf Flat White
Milk in proportion, because a decaf disappears under it sooner.
- 1 Maestro Decaffeinated capsule
- 100ml whole or oat milk
- A 150 to 180ml cup
- Steam or froth the milk to about 60 degrees, no hotter.
- Pull the espresso into the warmed cup.
- Pour the milk in slowly, keeping the foam thin.
- Stop at 100ml, or pull a second shot for anything larger.
What you'll end up with: An evening milk coffee where the coffee is still audible. One of the better reasons to keep a box of these by the machine.
Caffè Corretto, Without The Eleven O'Clock Problem
Espresso corrected with a spirit, on a base that lets you sleep afterwards.
- 1 Maestro Decaffeinated capsule
- 10 to 15ml grappa, brandy or sambuca
- A warmed espresso cup
- Pull the espresso into the warmed cup.
- Add the spirit straight in, 10 to 15ml and no more.
- Do not stir; let the two meet as you drink.
- Serve with cold water alongside.
What you'll end up with: A short warming nightcap. The decaf base is what turns this from a bad idea into a sensible one.
Affogato
Pudding from two ingredients, and the build where nobody notices it is decaf.
- 1 Maestro Decaffeinated capsule
- 2 scoops vanilla ice cream
- A cold bowl or glass
- Scoop the ice cream into a bowl straight from the freezer.
- Pull the espresso and pour it over immediately.
- Serve at once, while there is a hot layer and a cold one.
- Skip the syrup; the ice cream is the sweetness.
What you'll end up with: A pudding that tastes of coffee, served to a table that includes people who stopped drinking caffeine at lunchtime.
Brewing the perfect cup
Inside the pack
| Ingredient | Proportion | What it brings |
|---|---|---|
| Decaffeinated roasted and ground coffee | The whole of the capsule contents | Everything you taste. The caffeine was taken out of the green bean before roasting, so what reaches the capsule is an ordinary roasted coffee with the stimulant removed rather than a different kind of drink. |
| Bean composition | Printed on the pack | Lavazza states the composition of the blend on the carton. We have not restated a ratio or an origin we cannot read off the box in your hand. |
| Decaffeination method | Printed on the pack where declared | Several industrial processes are used, and roasters often name theirs on the carton. It is a pack-level fact and we have not assumed which one was used here. |
| Capsule and lid | One sealed capsule per drink | The seal keeps a ground coffee aromatic for months, which matters more for a decaf than for anything else in this range. It is also why the material and the recycling route are pack-level facts. |
| Water (added by the machine) | The bulk of the finished cup | Your machine decides the volume, not the capsule. A 25 to 30ml pour keeps what body there is concentrated; a long pour thins a decaf faster than it thins a caffeinated capsule. |
Pack: Lavazza Espresso Maestro Decaffeinated Nespresso Compatible, 10 Capsules; GTIN 8000070053601; 10 capsules, one espresso each, so ten drinks per carton. Decaffeinated, which means a small residual amount of caffeine rather than none. Best-before date printed on the pack.
A black espresso carries almost no calories; anything added at the cup, milk or sugar, changes that entirely, and the nutrition panel on the pack is the figure to work from.
Sourcing & blend. Lavazza Espresso Maestro Decaffeinated Nespresso Compatible, 10 Capsules is put together by Lavazza of Turin, a house that has been blending for the Italian domestic espresso market for well over a century. The useful thing to understand about decaf is that decaffeination happens to the green bean, before any roasting, and that the process changes the structure of the bean in ways the roaster then has to compensate for. That compensation is the whole difference between a decaf worth drinking and one that tastes of cardboard, and it is why a serious roaster's decaf is a genuinely different proposition from a cheap one. This capsule is built to the same short-serve brief as the rest of the Maestro line rather than treated as an afterthought. For the decaffeination method, the certifications, the capsule material and the recycling route carried by the carton in your hand, read the current pack.
What is in Lavazza Espresso Maestro Decaffeinated Nespresso Compatible, 10 Capsules, and what is not:
- In: decaffeinated roasted and ground coffee, sealed in a capsule, and nothing else.
- No added flavourings, sugar or sweeteners: the character in the cup is roast and blend choice, not an added ingredient.
- Not caffeine free: decaffeination removes the great majority of the caffeine, not all of it. Treat this as a low-caffeine drink if you are avoiding caffeine on medical advice.
- No dairy in the capsule: a black espresso from it is a plant based drink; milk is something you add.
- Machine note: Nespresso Original machines only. Not Vertuo, and not Lavazza A Modo Mio. Capsules are sealed, should not be opened or refilled, and are pressurised while the machine runs.
